The ESV translation gerrymanders entire verses out of the main text and down in to the footnotes. If John MacArthur is ok with translators and publishers who do that, well then he really should have no objection if you or I choose to cross out a few verses we don't agree with.
7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. (1Jo 5:7-8 KJV)
---------------------- 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. (1Jo 5:7-8 ESV)
ESV also attacks the doctrine of the Trinity in its rendering of 1 John 5:7
KJV has "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.", whereas the ESV has, "For there are three that testify."
@jlopez47 It does not attack anything. Every single member of the ESV transaltion commitee believes in the Doctrine of the Trinity. They just simply acknowledge the fact that, given the manuscript evidence we have, there is less than a 1% chance that 1 John 5:7 was written in the original autograph. The Doctrine of the trinity is solidly supported elsewhere in the Bible without the need for 1 John 5:7.
@spriles An honest question: would that be because the other manuscripts' rendering of 1 John 5:7 don't agree with Codex Vaticanus and Codex Sinaiticus? If so, that would clear up the 1% part.
Go check it for yourselves. Revelation 1:11(ESV) has omitted "I am Alpha & Omega, The First & the Last". A strategic attack on the Diety of our Lord Jesus Christ. Compare it with Rev 1:11(KJV). Now talk about taking away from the scriptures! "And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. -Revelation 22:19. KJV all the way...
All I am going to say is that I am a King James Bible Believer. Once my eyes were opened to the truth about the new modern bible versions and how they attack the deity of Jesus Christ, the doctrine of salvation, and how they take away verses, I decided to stick with the King James Bible. Now, I am not afraid of the modern translations, and if people still use them, then that is their choice. But if you want a fuller reading and the Authentic Text of Scripture, I recommend the King James Version.
Link below to "hear" John affirm the blood of Jesus "had to be" shed in His death.
How it's critical to affirm it was Jesus' substitutionary (death) paying penalty of sin.
The phrases "thru his blood" and "by His blood" don't teach His fluid has efficacy, but rather describe His violent, substitutionary death that satisfied God's justice.

I have read a lot of the translations and I prefer the KJV but still the ESV is good too.. I just wished he would do a KJV version of the study bible..
No doubt about it, the ESV is the very best Bible available. I don't think you have to get the MacArthur version, but I do recommend the ESV Study Bible. It cannot compare to any other Bible. God Bless!
You can always see a KJV Onlyist by their use of ALL CAPS. Why is that? Never mind, I know why, and I won't respond to any foolishness over it. Suffice to say that God is in control and He has no doubt blessed this Bible. Be encouraged, God is faithful.
The way some advertise the latest ESV (Study) Bibles, you would think Jesus were coming back or something. Indeed, it is all too easy to forget the entire point of the Word IS to keep us pointed to and ready for the arrival of our First Love! I am not anti-ESV, I just don’t appreciate feeling like I’m being sucked in by some calculated marketing ploy, which unfortunately is how a lot of the Reformed leaders tend to run their ministries (via constant new book releases, mega-conferences, etc...)

i think i might prefer a non-calvinist point of view with respect to study notes, but i am sure they might be helpful to some extent.

What does he mean by the "best manuscripts"? Does he mean the "oldest and best"(as if!)? That is very subtle...

YOU ARE SUCH A LIAR MACARTHUR!
YOU THROW IN THE "AUTHORIZED" JUST TO FOOL THE IGNORANT WHO KNOW NO BETTER!
YOU HAVE STRIPPED CHRIST OF HIS DEITY, IN KEEPING THE THE HUNDREDS OF OTHER PERversions.
NEVERTHELESS, YOU DO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT IT IS THE "OLD AUTHORIZED' THAT IS DIGNIFIED AND THE TRUE WORD OF GOD!
YOU ARE NO MORE THAN A HERETIC ON THE BLOOD OF CHRIST, AND NOW YOU PRESUME TO TAKE WITH YOU THE IGNORANT STRAIGHT TO THE LAKE OF FIRE!
YOU ARE A WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING!
