Hello, Im a new collector of knives and other things weaponry and Renaissance. I am 14 years old and wondering where I can find a ceramic sharpening rod to hone a razors edge on my finest piece. Its made of 1090 steel I think. Thank you!
use both. use the arkansas whet stone to get the blade sharp, then use the ceramic rod to hone it to a fine edge to cut smoothly. not using the honing rod will result in a sharp blade that tears more than slices. using a honing rod without the whet stone will just waste your time. it is similar to looking under a microscope, you have two knobs one is rough(coarse) the other is precise(fine). the stone is rough the ceramic is precise. it's a two step process.
@redron213 Hi Redron, Did you find a ceramic sharpener? If you're still looking, key in Steamboat Super Sharpeners. There's supposed to be a website, I don't know, I just make em. I know there is a youtube vid about em from someone I don't know. Best wishes, Dave

this fkn guy doesnt know wtf he is on about wen it comes to the teeth on a knife..... the teeth help cut through things, they are so small that they are like a chainsaw as u slice with ur blade . if u remove them, its like cutting a peice of leather with a sharp spoon. making the teeth, is the most important process of keeping ur blade smooth. Hence the steel.... it makes new teeth on ur knife, to help it cut, and makes them straight,
wrong, your opinions don't equal fact. when you have a knife that has just been sharpened and not been steeled, it's jagged edges try to tear rather than cut, so if you were to try and shave with a knife before steeling it and wearing down the teeth you would cut up your face rather than cut the hair off. or if you were cutting paper the teeth would catch on the paper and tear it leaving rough edges rather than splitting it down the middle with smooth edges.
that really depends on what stone you use as your finest stone, yes most western stones are not fine enough for a face shaving edge, however I have shaved my face with the edge form a good translucent arkansaw stone pretty good.
If you were to finish with say a 30,000 grit shapton with proper technique it certainly will shave your face. Also, stropping with compound is really preferable to steeling.
what the hell do you know. i am a meat cutter and i sharpen my own knives in the shop. i know what i am talking about. what is your expertise. trolling?
sure, whatever. like i said, what is your expertise. you don't even know what it is to properly sharpen a knife. how old are you 8? 10? you opinions mean nothing. im done with you.
there is no need to "steel" ( I would never use a steel but always use ceramic rod) after sharpening. honing only need take place after the knife is used and between sharpenings. "steeling" or Honing is the proper term, only brings the edge back to staight its purpose is not to remove metal.
@SneakySolidSnake This is true... Look at knife after sharpening under microscope. It looks like a wood saw. The teeth on it need to be straightened out first.

I have yet to meet a chef or meat cutter that could properly hone a knife let alone put a new edge on one with water stones
