The level of influence is only increased by the intentionality of institutions like madrasas to propagate their principles. I can definitely see madrasas as a places where you bond. It's unfortunate, however that the ideas accepted in some madrasas in particular can be so dangerous and destructive.

When you are young(age < 6-8) even 2 weeks away from home are rough, just adjusting to the different living settings, missing family, all adds to frustration, the movie just captured those comments in the beginning and blew it out of proportion. You can see, the kids are ok after a while as they have adjusted to the situation.

I am a Muslim born and raised in the United States and I am of Pakistani descent. I have lived in the U.S. for my entire life but I do visit my extended family in Pakistan on occasion. I do not think that anything showed in this film is untrue. However, this film is NOT indicative of the norm for all madrassas in Pakistan or for Americans going to Pakistan to study in madrassas. This film captures a representation of an extreme minority within Pakistan, not the majority by any means.

I am a muslim from pakistan and even I am saddened by this footage of everything that is wrong in pakistan but whats even sadder is how the westerners are reacting to it. Such footage must invoke hatred towards the religion and towards the culture.. that is understandable but we have progressed as a human race where we should not be dictated by such sentiments. The issue is deeper than that.
It is not the Westerners who are intolerant, its the ones coming to non-muslim countries suicide bombing and preaching hate. How the westerners are reacting is a side effect. Do not think by saying this I am promoting killings of innocent muslims, I am not.

When you are young(age < 6-8) even 2 weeks away from home are rough, just adjusting to the different living settings, missing family, all adds to frustration, the movie just captured those comments in the beginning and blew it out of proportion. I am a Muslim born and raised in the United States and I am of Pakistani descent. I have lived in the U.S. for my entire life but I do visit my extended family in Pakistan on occasion. I do not think that anything showed in this film is untrue. However, this film is NOT indicative of the norm for all madrassas in Pakistan or for Americans going to Pakistan to study in madrassas. This film captures a representation of an extreme minority within Pakistan, not the majority by any means.

I think everyone has a right to religious education (catholic schools in the us?) the parents have the right to decide what is best for their children till they are independent and no child likes his or her school and if asked would readily make it sound as the worst place on the planet. The question is, did the children die from punishment, malnutrition?

as a matter of fact they are required to be in school and of a certain age to be inducted into that particular madrassah. Some of the madrassahs dont have that requirement and are meant as instruments to spread hate. The issue is broad and cannot be generalized and this film tends to use the ignorance of its western audience of eastern cultures to make a lion out of an ant

It seems to me that this is a movie about one madrassa -- one supported by the Taliban and houses up to 80 American children. After all the mutfi of the school brags (wikipedia) that he doesnt teach anything but Islam. These kids have been deprived of an education in their most formative years

that is sheer speculation that it is supported by the taleban ( and by taleban i mean the fanatical regime that governed afghanistan and that was supported by none other than the pakistani government and the us government). It is a requirement in this madrassah for these children to be school going (which means that they have to be in some sort of regular school. Thats what i meant). They also claim to teach math and science subjects

And the word talib means a student in pakistan. the taleban are mostly pashtuns and they are in regions bordering afghanistan and pakistan not in karachi! you are mixing things up. Such footage must invoke hatred towards the religion and towards the culture.. that is understandable but we have progressed as a human race where we should not be dictated by such sentiments.
