well, Precision bass's sound is fat, low end, and the flatwound strings just help the bass sound like that :) rounds sound good also, its a matter of taste actually. Listen to James Jamerson, he used his very old flatwounds, and he sounds amazing, imho thats how a p bass should sound :)
Flats were used until Entwistle came around and just blew the place up. Flats are not as bright as roundwound. It's an old school thing. Flats are best IMO on passive vintage Fenders and Rickenbackers.

Rounds will chew up your frets. My '66 is due for refretting because of rounds--would've probably been O.K. had I used flats.
