PS3 starts, hard disk spins up, then the console shuts off

this happened to me about 1 month ago, and a staff at the game shop said that a disc or something is stuck inside. i swapped it for another one.

so that may be the problem.

it power cord or power unit that power cord gos into is bad look online for power unit mine did this too if it power cord use your computer power on your ps3 if it work this is good if not it power unit

I fixed it!!! okay what you have to do is go to recovery menu, then system update. Now update to the latest software and as its checking pull out your hard drive wait a few seconds and put it back in. It will say "format system partition" ect press start and select and it will fix your ps3!

I had this problem and managed to fix it. The rpoblem is that someone has stuffed the firmware by putting dodgy custom FW on it. As long as you can get into the recovery menu, you should be able to fix it.

I forget exactly which option I used on the recovery menu, but I ended up needing to delete the HDD's partitions using Gparted, then performing a complete update procedure to 3.55. PM me if you need help.

you probably have this fixed by now but I had the same problem with my newer slim version, its basiclly the PS3's ring of death precursor. I was still under warrenty so they fixed it for free after I sent it in.

Dude It might be overheated make sure that the ps3 has space to the right and the back. i am having the same prob but my red light keeps flashin red but there is no flashin yellow light.

UPDATE - While it still doesn't work, apparently cooking the board did fix an issue with the blu-ray drive. Before, when I would start it up, the disc drive wouldn't load a disc and the blue light would flash as though there was a disc inside. Since cooking it, it no longer does that. It will take the disc and start the system, but it still shuts down after a few seconds.
