I know it''s silly. It''s only a movie. I've watched it hundreds of times, and will probably watch it hundreds more. So when my local television station showed a colorized version I was upset. I still can't see why they do that. Supposedly to attract younger viewers. I just tune out the color of my television. It seemed to drain something from it. But the story was still there. Love it!
Because you were watching the single greatest screen actress we have ever had. With all due respect to Meryl. (But she still has tread wear. She's still alive. And I mean that most respectfully.)
i saw this movie last night on amc after a feww years i love this movie especially when barbara faints in his arms and he looks at her so deeply it makes me cry every time i see it and when the joln doe club come that womans voice sounds so sincere so helpful "please come with us mr Doe"
Barbara Stanwyck made just about any scene that she was ever in. But I don't think she turned down good help when she could get it,a and she got some in this case.
Still, this was Capra's most problematic ending by far, but Stanwyck made it work.
I only wish she and Lombard had an opportunity to make a movie together. The little kids on the set would certainly had great birthday cakes, that they stayed up all night to make.
Two geniuses. Ruby Stevens and Jane Alice Peters. (Before their names changed, of course.)
I think Capra wound up using the best of the choices, especially for 1941 and its audiences. He wove something that was probably unresolveable with any ending. Perhaps what he picked among the three alternates is not perfect, but we wouldn't all be still watching this after 66 years if it didn't work somehow.
2:42 - "oh John, if it's worth dying for, it's worth living for!!!"
I just watched this film and I was in tears. Barbara Stanwyck was simply the best. I'm still blown away by how well her performances hold up today.

Barbara Stanwyck IS God. She's the greatest actress the American cinema has ever seen.

@edwardjames50
Yup. Indeed. Sorry, Ms. Streep. But I have a sneaking suspicion that Ms. Streep might agree with us.

You better believe it. And if you don't, she'll shoot you.
And then nurse your wound.

Gary Cooper refused to make the movie without Barbara Stanwyck.
Very wise fellow.

Oh, i didn't know that. I know they made a couple movies together. Yes. Good onscreen chemistry.:)

In fact there were 5 endings.
Niouni 4 years ago
Yes, five endings were discussed, but I believe (and I haven't checked lately) that they actually filmed only three.
Doesn't matter.

smartman43 4 years ago 2
you know there were 3 diffrent endings 2 this film
1. john jumps off
2. norrten coninces him not to
3. the one you see here
Frank Capra hated them all but couldn't come up with anything better
