Consider that the mass of present day pianists can only make their fame and fortune from performing the 'standard and boring masterpieces' - not many venture into the unknown even though there are many great pieces worth discovering and playing: Perhaps technique also plays a part as many present day pianists are vastly over-rated in this capacity...
he´s a sort of hybrid: some very French touches in the middle melody but the C minor sections are perhaps too contrived and dont reallydevelop enough. The piano writing is interestingly Tschaikovskyesque at times and there are even pre-Rach shades. I wonder how he was viewed by his contemporaries?
Its good, but I feel that you can't hear the piano enough. The orchestra overpowers it, although I'm not sure if that's a compositional trait or just this recording.
@steeeeevve Hmm, I thought the melody starting at 1:26 to be pretty strong, but I have to agree the whole piece is harmonically a bit 'safe'. The left hand triplet part at 4:09 is quite pretty I think. But then again the chords at 5:25 are a bit silly. But still, overall not a bad piece. I don't thinks it lacks feeling, it has a great romantic feel to it IMHO. Lack of originality: perhaps. But that is not the most important thing right?
@steeeeevve Well, we're all stealing from the Greek pitch structures. No music really is original anyway. I don't feel that the "lack of originality" detracts from this.
@steeeeevve Where's the line drawn then? This piece is romantic. So, it will sounds a little like Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, etc. But that is where that line is drawn.
The chopin concerti...Those concerti are just bad. Miserable orchestration. I have listened somewhat to the rach concerti, although I am not as familar with them as I would like. I'm not really that much of a fan of Tchaikovsky. I prefer the Russian nationalist composers when I listen to Russian, and the western composers when I'm listening to western music. But that's just a preference. I still admire him as a composer.
@thegreatapologist I agree that the orchestrations of chopin's concerti are not very good but the piano part of the first concerto is just perfect! It's one of the greatest concerto ever written (IMO). But I agree that "russian concertos" are great too...
I like how the ostinato and arpeggio passages are concise, and very rhythmic. Rather unlike the superfluous scales in a Saint Saens concerto (nothing against Saint Saens or his concertos thought).
I like the mixed difficulty in this piece. Some parts are actually rather easy while others are way up there . It's a shame he didn't get the recognition he deserves, this piece is powerful!
i am actually in love with this piece! i got through the first round of the BBC young musician of the year. lol if i get through to the finals, this will definitely be the piece i will play!
Sometimes it's normal for composers to sound like each other because they might be both Russian composers, but in this case, Pierne is French and Rachmaninov is Russian. I'm also kind of befuddled.
With the recent youtube removal of some of my videos, I've tried to refrain from uploading *full works* or the full CD content. It may not make much of a difference to copyright fanatics, but at least I'm not uploading entire CD's (except for Roslavets and Feinberg).
Besides that, the second "Scherzando" is ok, but it's so brief and its melodic content almost cartoonish, that I didn't think many viewers would be thrilled with it. Buy the CD from Berkshire Records Outlet; it's only $6.99!
thats fine i understand what you mean........i have acces to naxos and i can listen to it from there, and i also have the score.!! yes the best are the first and third movement.........I just like to listen and watch the score on a video (like your videos)........
@Hexameron Hi Hexameron.... Thanks for this amazing work. By the way.... I remember the Berkshire Record outlet when it just started in the 70s I think..... I must have spent 1000s of dollars there over the years....

No originality but some individuality.

This piece is not within a million miles of Saint Saens or Chopin.
steeeeevve 1 year ago
@steeeeevve Would you be so kind to explain why?
titusbeertsen 1 year ago
@titusbeertsen
A lack of great melody.
A lack of deep feeling.
A lack of originality.

@titusbeertsen
1. The melody at 1.26 is strong in the sense of "masculine" but it is not strong in the sense of individuality.
2.The music is pretty at 4.08.
3.The piece has a romantic sweep to it but then it is written in the romantic style so that is hardly surprising.
4.Nothing you have said contradicts the vast inferiority of this piece to the Great Masters.
5.Originality is important as in The Carnival of the Animals and Chopin's first Ballade.
steeeeevve 1 year ago
@steeeeevve Originality is only important in so far as it preserves our enjoyment. This piece is still enjoyable, so originality is irrelevent.
