  • you mean g knight can go to h3?

  • when black plays d5 it always messes me up I usually just take it and they hit me back with their queen. I then pull out the knight to threaten the queen and they usually retreat back to the original position. Is there good suggestion when they immediately pull out there d5 pawn.

  • @sean1ers I do exactly what you do. It's not bad. You're trading one of black's centre pawns for one of your flank pawns, which is a good deal. And then black loses a tempo retreating their queen. All in all it's looking better for white at that point.

  • uploaded on my birthday =P

  • now i use the english opening and dragon sicillian that you taught on here and im pretty good with them i like the drgon sicillian cause you said its razor sharp ad you cant mess up so that puts pressure on me to not mess up but i have a couple of times and im tellin you you wasnt lyin i lost both rooks and queen haha but thx for all your help

  • thx jrobi cause of you ive gotten better at chess when i first started off i was afraid to lose my pieces haha everytime i would lose my bishops, rooks, and knights, i would reverse the move gaining them back haha (playing against the computer that is) but since ive been looking at your vids you taught me to not be afriad to lose or even sacrifice pieces ive gotten pretty good now i still make little mistakes and sometimes not paying attention i hate that but hey im human

  • the knight should go to H3 right not G3

  • Good job on this. First for taking the time and for knowing the history of the games your showing, I am seeing that chess is like kung fu. There are many styles and one must find what works for them and master that style. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I do know if you can focus these help.

  • nice one...please subscribe to my channel friends..

  • this video does not deserve this many views

  • 大山先生、中盤の展開の解説のときに全然大盤見てない・・・。

    全部頭の中で見えてるってこと?

    凄すぎ・・

  • actually at 3:53, the "G" knight can move to E2 and H3 not G3 lol. I'm sure you already knew that, just trying to point that out

  • hes not saying that he knows these plays will be made but this opening has been used several times by many very good players and the most likely response is that and its proven to work and if your gonna say why is that gonna happen thats why their are so many different strategies to adapt....if your not gonna take the time to learn to play why are you watching these videos?

  • not very effective when ur facing the computer -.-

  • abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz 0123456789

  • Great video. Thank's for sharing

  • Just one question: HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DO THAT MOVE???

  • @runekenamy You don't. :) That's why class players shouldn't worry too much about openings but just learning to play better. Otherwise it's like you're driving on the highway when you only know how to ride a bike. <_<

  • bishop to B4 is black's second move? lol.maybe when you play with 700 rated opponents.

  • 2:55 lol " Knight takes bishop queen takes bishop " WTF ? haha..

  • You just said the G knight can up go up to g3 but great tutioral and ive got a chess tourney in a hour

  • whaaat's aahhh up ahh, well ahh,..

  • GOOD, IT HAS BEEN SINCE I WAS A CHILD I PLAY CHESS, I WON MANY GAMES WELL THANKS FOR THE REFRESHING,,I LOVE THE WORD

  • @jrobichess Hello. I like your videos very much, you do a great job. I wonder if you could tell me you have a FIDE rating and at what websites or programs do you like to play chess. And what is your nickname in chess or real name and surname, if it is not a secret?

  • Watch 7887yoyoyo ...... They are FRICKEN HILARIOUS

  • WHAT IF BLACK DOESN'T DO WHAT BLACK DOES IN THIS VIDEO?!??!??

    *takes a deep breath*

  • @Rybread34 Heh I had the same frustration at first. The book moves are that way because they've been worked out for both players as the most statistically sound through 20-25 moves or so. If your opponent deviates, then theoretically you've gained a slight advantage because the defense they've chosen is less than "ideal." Of course you have to be a good enough player to take advantage of that

Don't start learning chess through openings. Watch famous games. Youll learn more. Try Fischer v Byrne

  • hey! take a look at the first image! white's queen and king are reversed!!!

  • @rafaelbdb2 hahahaha nice!

  • @rafaelbdb2 lol

  • @rafaelbdb2 yup yer right good eye

  • @rafaelbdb2 stupid artist

  • genius to wait for the knight to come out before taking their bishop so the queen is blocked....

  • i love chess i won a match playing this and i only learnt from this video thank you i won my school tournament came first and woon a huge silver plated trophy thank you i won a little won aswell and i met cj of the eggheads yay

  • In America They Eat All over the place. LOL. There's no invitation whatsoever!!

  • the g knight cant move to g3...

  • what is a good way to counteract this opening? anybody??

  • @bellybroom none.

It is the best there is and whoever plays it wins.

    .

    d=^))

    not really

J Robi gives several responses, and, should those not work, try what Tal does. Throw a Knight into the mix and see what comes out.

  • the fist 1 minute and 28 seconds was spend in idol chat

  • Please stop talking so much in the video's. It really detracts from the information being presented. Perhaps more info could be given so much time wasn't spent in idol chatter.

  • I reckon the Scholar's opening is much more better...just saying :P

  • @packman812able "Much more better".. I think I'll stick to the video. The scholar's opening isn't even a real opening either..

  • 2:54 ... sorry but ... White takes bishop, queen takes KNIGHT!!

  • 3:53 kight can not go to g3 in one move but in two moves

  • great videos

  • @zergsac and yet, it's probably still accurate

  • I'm growing fond of the opening because of being able to open the same way without much interference from Black.

And, if interference comes, it seems to be more the Dragon in reverse and a move up. I expect the guy that i play will try the mirror sometime soon.

    I dunno.

    Don't care.

I just LOVE this game of Chess!

  • @MisterBoneman : And it loves you so much. Actually, the Devil is behind Chess and he does not love you but wishes to have you transported to Hell. Chess ? The Devil's Game !

  • @MusicPredominates Sorry, we have no time for your nonsense, Music. To believe in hell is to claim christianity. To claim christianity you don't judge others.

Not to mention there IS no hell.

    There is only Heaven.

And we live in it now, here.

  • what about mirror response ...1. c4 c5 ?

  • @42024247514 e4 lol

  • In the timeless words of Shawshank Redemption actor Morgan Freeman, "Chess is a fucking mystery to me. I hate it" best suits this experience.

  • What program is this?

  • Where do you guys play chess online?

  • @SpinningDoors Yahoo chess or chess.com - chess.com is really awesome trust me check it out!

  • @ 2:16... For me the first thing i would do is go

    c7

    to

    c6

    What do i do then?

  • I've been trying out the English opening recently and in the first game I played with it I worked my way into a bad position and I'm not sure exactly why. Can anyone take a look at my first 7 moves and tell me what you think I did wrong and perhaps what I should've done?

    1. c4, nf6

    2. nc3, c6

    3. g3, d5

    4. b3, d4

    5. na4, e5

    6. e3, dxe3

    7. fxe3, bb4

  • the english is a classic. playing it will definitely help you develop a better positional style. i would recommend checking out a bunch of carlsen's older games, he has made a living grinding people down w/ ir

  • That's not the queen's gambit if white attacked a black pawn on the second move with 1. d4 d5 2.c4 c6 it's the Slav but the moves weren't played in order. And The Queen's gambit is 2. ...e6

  • Fianchetto is Feeannketoe

  • Deep Shredder 12 + Shredder Classic 4 (w serials)

  • @LiallisVladik turbobit.net/mb1p24wwhwty.html

  • Take care. Hope you enjoy the... flight ))))

  • How did white knight take black bishop? wasnt there a piece on the way?

  • @88dragons88 knights jump pieces when they are capturing (or moving). This means the knights can basically go through any piece to get the square they are attacking.

  • @Pooternackle5 what do you mean by prolonged ?Playing 24 hours per day?lol....I thing that you are joking, especially for Alzheimer...

  • Hey jrobi love your videos I've just started playing and your videos have been a great help and enjoyable to watch. One question about this video: is it accurate to say that the pair of pawns on each flank are their own separate islands? I guess it doesn't really matter though.

  • I've played this opening many times and i've never seen the game play out on these exact lines

  • Then there's blacks most common defense to this, nf6, which isn't even covered

  • 03:44 "The G knight can come out to two places..." G3 is not a valid move for that knight.

  • @shochikubai26 Good call.

  • Man i had forgotten just how complicated of a game this can become. lol

  • Is it helpful to mentally draw out all the possible options of maneuvers for every piece?

  • @Pooternackle5 No fucking way.

  • what program are you using to record your chess boards?

  • I'm working on a chess strategy called the Cincinatti BowTie. Think it'll work well

  • Nice instructive video

  • @Pooternackle5 - No, it's right son. "Scientifically proven". lol Oh for crying out loud, you clearly don't even play chess. lol

  • 3:52 its h3........interesting opening btw

  • i prefer the great wall of china defense for black to counter the english opening. this defense is english's worst nemesis

  • @dimseeeen and... wtf is that???

  • @dimseeeen - I Googled, "Chess, the great wall of china defense", and it came up with nothing. You wouldn't be a troll, would you? :)

  • @JohnQuincyAdams1 great wall of china is made of stone too...

  • @dimseeeen - Of course it is. So?

  • @JohnQuincyAdams1 that means its in china

  • @dimseeeen - Are you really *that* bored?

  • knight can't go to G3 from G1

  • @6Metal6Wolf6 you know he meant h3

  • Im interested in playing 1). Nf3 ...... 2) C4 ... cn someone gve me good advices or some links to master ths opening ???

  • i have no idea what he's talking about

  • Very cool.

I made a cool web page about Chess Sets

    squidoo.com/really-cool-chess-sets

  • sorry to bother you, buit I have to say that your speech is too quick for a non native speaker. Anyway your analysis is quite useful

  • it was h 3 for the knight

  • Love the English! so many lines that can be potentially interesting. It's easier to learn than e4 and there are so many lines to choose from. You can get a positional game, a dynamic game, a slight advantage, anything!

  • You say the white knight can move to G3 instead of H3.

  • Nice job !! Really nice.... check out my video please !!

  • I think people blame openings on whether they lose or not, but people seem to forget there is a middle and end game. Chances are you might have had a good opening and stuffed up the middle or end game. To me an opening is to help you get an advantage for the middle game, I see to many people saying this is the best opening or this is and they usually base it on how many times they won or lost with that opening. That's just my opinion anyway

  • @tjthegreat7 I agree. Studying openings is a misuse of time for players below expert level. I now can beat masters without ever having studied an opening, simply by understanding the dynamics of the game and proper piece movement. Of course at this level if I do get an opening disadvantage it can be devastating but at lower levels you get opportunities to recover.

  • @tjthegreat7 Thats true, but as black I constantly fail against the english opening, when I do much better with Queens gambit declined and Sicilian games

  • "...according to wikipedia." and we all know how reliable that is ;)

  • @LittleMeRox100 that would have to be the most boring troll ever to edit a wikipedia entry about chess

  • @smb50073 - Certainly better than taking the time and effort to make a post criticizing someone we don't even know.

  • can u please send me a message on what website i should play chess on so i can use an engine? because i am trying to get better so i can make the high school chess team next year.

  • @necroman302 - There are no chess websites that will allow you to use an engine, as that's cheating. If you'd like to become better, send me a private message. I teach chess and have several students.

  • @JohnQuincyAdams1 I didn't mean that i wanted an engine to use during a game. I ment I wanted to use an engine after my games to see what I did wrong

  • @necroman302 - There are many chess programs on the market and the one I can recommend to you is called, "Chessmaster - Grandmaster Edition". Any decent video game store should have it or be able to order it for you. It's only $20 and is an excellent chess program. However, playing against a computer isn't the best way to improve your chess game.

  • "Chess refinery is a ridiculous concept. I want my generals to understand only the basics of chess. Anything more and they will be spending 400 hours debating on the contingencies of latrine emplacement!"

    Who said it?

  • can you make a video on the passant by philadore?

  • at 1.51 when black moves Bishop to B4. would this move make any sense? move pawn to A3, the Bishop moves to A5 (still pinning the knight, moving anywhere else would be counter productive), then B2 pawn to B4, Bishop retreats to B6, and C4 pawn to C5. now he lost his bishop. pls comment on the pros and cons of this move. thank you everyone.

  • what is a athlete, a athlete is sportsperson. Chess is a sport. I'M A CHESS ATHLETE!!!!

  • yes...you'll see me a lot more in here. You do spark good points, J Robi. And with a head THIS old and dusty cobwebs everywhere, I can always use a spark to get some good fire going.

    Thanx!

  • Small mistake; at 4:00, you said the white knight can go to G3, which it can't, it can however, go to H3.

  • now you can run fritz12 on ipod and ipad......watch my videos...

  • what program do you use?

  • Are you not supposed to talk with a pure English accent when it is about the English opening? XD hahaha. Good video man.

  • Can someone please explain to me why Black moves the bishop in the second move? All that that move does is allow White to move their knight up the board and also attack the bishop at the same time, making the bishop move again and wasting a move. Wouldn't Black's King's Knight to F6 be a better move for Black, in that it develops a Knight and also stops White from placing their Knight on that square?

  • What kind of software are you using to create these tutorials?

  • I too want the answer......so that I can use it 2 analyse my own game moves....

  • scan anyone give me a free website where i can play chess

    -thanks

  • @XxZdarkyZxX

Yeah, I was disappointed with chess doot com

Thanks for the new ChessCube doot com

E4, E5 lets get it on.

  • @JohnQuincyAdams1

Just in case you didn't know chessbase doot com is great for everything to do with chess.

  • @AlltimeTrance - Thanks for the tip. :)

  • Comment removed

  • Dude the one with the prong crown is king

  • I tend to do well with playing e3 and placing my g knight at e2 so i try a Petrosian system or just play d4 and hopeful remove my opponent's e pawn.

  • Chess is proof, that if you do (or make) something right. It will stand the test of time.

Readin' some of the comments about it is kind of fun, not to mention informative. Keep up the great videos jrobi, and keep with the great comments Fan Base.

  • @3m47s

The G-Knight can't move to G3 but it can move to H3...

  • a very great offense and defense.

  • @nnazareth1011 - I agree. Since I started playing the English Opening a lot, the typical response from my opponents has been to squirm, take a long time making moves, etc. As a result my chess rating has increased substantially. The English Opening is great! :)

  • Whats the BEST opening in Chess? and why?

  • @tatomuck18 - There is no one single best chess opening. The best opening is the one that you feel the most comfortable with. Everyone has their own style of play and using an opening that fits your styles of play the best, is the best opening to use. Games are not generally won or lost in the opening anyway, but in the middle game and end game, so the opening chosen is not so critically important.

  • @tatomuck18 - I've been playing chess professionally for many years and it would be my pleasure to help you out in selecting openings that match your style of play. What kind of style do you feel comfortable with? Do you like open games with pieces flying across the board in a grand struggle with your opponent, or are you a more conservative player that has a plays more carefully and methodically, slowing strangling the life out of your opponent with a boa constrictor around their neck? :)

  • jrobi i want to play with so badly....

  • good vid jrob!@2:04 when pawn moves to d4 why doesnt black take him? force the queen out

  • @gjnice21 I was thinking the same thing! :)

  • What if he moved not as listed here?

  • @2500xxxx It depends, opening theory is always evolving, but if you get very comfortable with your opening, and someone tries something like a pet move, and you lose, check it with engine assistance and see if you can figure out how to exploit such a move in the future. Generally opening lines are based on the trial and error of top players over many decades, so you shouldn't have a problem studying various plans for the next time you face it.

  • @jrobichess

Wow, how you learned and became like this.

  • @jrobichess - Hello JRobbi. You have done some very good work here on YouTube with our chess video''s. Hats off to you and thank you. I refer many of my friends to your channel here on YouTube and advice they subscribe to your channel to become better chess players. However, I noticed that on your channel, you only have 10 video's listed, where'as when I look at the video list to the right of this video, I count 24 of your video's. Why aren't all of your video's listed on your channel anymore?

  • @jrobichess

what happens if black moves on the first move d5? Is everything ad absurdum?

  • @jrobichess you need to play a chess game against thechesswebsite because you two are very similar and this could be a huge game.

  • I'm not an expert either but I believe it is to do with space issues, it traps in the knight on the queen side to some degree and can remove power from blacks bid at the centre. I don't know all variations of the English but these are the major reasons that come to me of the top of my head

  • I know i'm not a pro but why doesn't black attack the knight with his c7 pawn in any of the variations?

  • Kind of need to learn this in case, in a simultaneous display at my school few days ago I was playing as White and pushed the pawn to my normal d4 opening without looking then realised I'd actually played c4, ruined a lot of play in my game because the opening is one of my stronger stages and I played an opening I didn't know. Thanks for posting this vid, at least I'll know what to do if I make the same mistake again.

  • @praevenire - The English Opening is never a mistake. :)

  • @JohnQuincyAdams1 well whatever i did it worked because i subsequently won, maybe you're right.

  • You are the best!

And if you speak Spanish even you'll be better!

  • You are the best!

And if you speak Spanish you were even better xD

  • G3 = H3

  • what kind of opening the c4 and b4?

  • @marstuber96 - c4 and then black responds b4? That's not a possible move. Do you mean black responding with b5? If so, that is known as the Jaenisch Gambit and is a tricky, yet effective opening. :)

  • That's great.... calm, informative and very interesting.

  • @JohnQuincyAdams1 I know, I was being sarcastic. The G knight can't come out to G3. It can jump out sideways to H3, but not G3. The best move for white right at that point would be pawn to d5. Sets up a huge pawn island that screws over black's light-square bishop, and puts pressure on the c6 square, forcing blacks B Knight to flank out to the side, or to d7, which is a weak move.
