  • thanks for uploading - I think that of all the versions of Mephisto Waltz No. 1 I've heard, Stephen Hough's is the most vibrant! No offence to the greats, I like their interpretations of this piece too, but this simply blows me away~

  • it's not

  • As teen i heard an orchestral version of this piece and it was explosive. As a piano piece it sounds very tricky to keep up the tempo and still get the notes right. The development of the middle part is pure genius.

  • @MrAkihiros - Completely agree -

So, Lizst wrote it for orchestra

Or was it done later ?

It's interesting to read the comments here

This player is flabbergasting, . . Mr Hough

Yes that middle part is pure 'Angels'

Perhaps they tried to convert the Lucifer Guy but didn't succeed

seen the state of affairs on this planet

Please see my song JESUS AND THUMB IT IF YOU CAN !!

  • This is THE BEST recording of the Mephisto....ever. I had this on tape, and wore it out, lol.

  • If you find it - pl let us know - I think it's the most almost impossible to play piece. - And then at 02:50

it's so unbelievable beautiful. - and 03:52 Wow

    etc etc

  • george cziffra has some of the best Liszt ever

  • Actually we have a category

    called : "Crazy Savant"

Often hyper autistic but doeing things like

    Painting like MighelAngelo

or telling 59753569*876541 in a second

    -

I think Stephen Hough is one of them.

I heardhim on your page with Brahms . .

    -

    Thanks to the vaccins.

  • I agree there's a "crazy savant" quality to Hough's playing--he's extraordinary. But there's nothing even slightly autistic about him if you ever get a chance to see an interview w/ him or speak with him.

  • Y'r right - it was ripped from CD to WAV - then uploaded played to line in of another computer together with the video - Youtube doesn't accept audio - so next it was saved as WMV and then uploaded to Youtube who makes it Mono.

So happy you hear the melodie and (I would say Hough's wonderfull staccatos)

  • I don't know if it's the recording quality, but while the sound is very bright and vivid, the overall impression tends to be a bit tinny and jangly on this one, despite the brilliant playing, of course - one would expect no less of Mr Hough, as ever.

It sounds to me as if someone spilt a pint of guiness over the strings at some stage.

  • Brilliant
