I've been taught by an old woman that even though the women did get the vote in the early 20th century, they were always pushed by their husbands to vote for the politicians that their husbands supported. But that stopped around women's lib. Just saying a piece of social history.
It's not far to compare her to the amazing julie Andrews. in Mary Poppins, Glynis was already a mature woman, almost past her prime. Check her out in Miranda (b&w-1948) or The Court Jester 1955.
though we adore men individually, we agree that as a group they're rather stupid-the best lyrics ever written in a musical ever! WELL DONE! SISTER SUFFRAGETTE! WOMAN ALL THE WAY!
though we adore men individually, we agree that as a group they're rather stupid.... would have been a better line with "shitty"... just for rhyming value, instead of "stupid" haha but alas...
Glynis Johns has the mysterious power to steal every scene she was ever in, no matter who else was on screen ... if Abraham Lincoln and Queen Elizabeth I were in a movie with her, everyone would still be looking at Glynis.
She wasn't even paying attention to Katie Nana, LOL!!! She was a good singer, but not nearly as good as Julie Andrews. Vocally, Julie just overshadowed everyone in this film BIG TIME. But they were ALL brilliant actors!!
In 2008, We had a state history fair. The theme I cant remember, but It was about the women's suffrage. And the end I had a collection of pictures while this song was playing. when i showed it to the judges, the laughed and smiled at me. I went all the way to state! From 6th grade class room to utah state. Wow such a journey.
This song is just the best. "Though we adore men individually, we agree that as a group they're rather stupid." -- Too funny!
I do miss the bits later on that reveal Mrs. Banks hasn't quite taken women's rights fully to heart, such as when she asks one of the maids to put the sashs away saying, "You know how the cause infuriates Mr. Banks."
LOL they have a heart attack when she lifts her dress up a little bit! Could you imagine if they saw what girls wear today!

This must be the song that won over PL Travers.

What a husky but cheering voice! This must be the most recognizable role that Glynis Johns has played.

Well, one of the hardest things for her was to be a political activist while still being a model wife. Poor dear's still a bit of a pansy though.
