Actually the particular sword fight that inspired the one in the secret of NIMH was from "The Vikings" starring Kirk Douglas. Supposedly some parts of that fight were traced frame-for-frame directly from "The Vikings".
@Flashmikko I saw it. It was either traced frame by frame or used as the choreography for the sequence. I kept imagining the dialogue between Justin and Jenner as I saw it.
Excellent scene. Although around the 1:00 mark it's obvious that Flynn's just slapping at Rathbone's blade and not actually trying to impale him. Great scene despite that minor nitpick.
Amazing editing job!!! Complete sword fight scene!! I don't think anyone nocticed, how this sword fight kept cutting back to the main hall battle! Almost like the duel with Skywalker & Darth in Empire strikes back, where the direct got this from! Again, well done!
this scene took 3 days to shoot, the experts say rathbone was the better swordsman but this is debated,Curtiz stated that despite being very close friends flynn and rathbone went toe toe with this scene both actors actually drawing blood Cutizwas a hell of a directer but a prick to work for-no one could stand him so errol and basil decided to gove him 110 percent just to keep him of their backs.By the way flynn was not permitted a drink on the set so he had his people inject voldka into oranges
Notice that when Sir Guy falls down the stairs, the sword goes with him, but when Flynn jumps down, the sword magically is at his feet. Great scene, but the Mark of Zorro scene with Power is a little better.
i didn't like both the stunts and the clothing of this movie, but this fight is awesome! it's a good thing fencing's coming back in movies these days! this is my second favorite after shanghai knights (chon wang vs lord nelson rathbone)
Yeah, definitely one of the greatest. This is probably the 10th time I've seen it and I just realized Robin's final stab was kind of a cheapshot. You think they could've come up with a more cool way to kill the bad guy.
Not really a cheap shot....feint high and disengage to a low line when your opponent moves up to meet it....a legitimate move.
And this fight isn't even CLOSE to Rathbone/Power in the Mark of Zorro. Flynn isn't so much fencing here as slapping his blade agsinst Rathbone's....if you watch it carefully, Rathbone definitely leads the action.
Flynn was good...but he was a weak sister to Rathbone AND Power.
it was Robin's style to have the opponent lead the action; it would then be easier to catch them by surprise with an attack. But good catch with the feint and disengage. i recognized it since I've been fencing for nearly four years. Too bad modern swordfights can't be as classic as this
I recall hearing somewhere this was Bruce Lee's favorite fight scene.

Did anyone know that this exact fight scene was the inspiration for the fight sequence in The Secret of NIMH? I can clearly see the similarities.

@Flashmikko I've never seen that one, but I'm certain that from 1:29-1:32 was used in "Secret of NIMH". Two fight scenes in one film. Score.
VanitasxAura 9 months ago
@VanitasxAura You were so right. That was traced frame by frame. Either that or just used the film as choreography for the fight.

@VanitasxAura
You should check it out then. It's probably the best and most accurate viking movie made to date.

Few people realize that Basil Rathbone was an Olympic fencer. He had to TEACH Flynn how to do it EFFECTIVELY to add realism to this film!

I think Rathbone fits for swashbucklers' villains rather than Holmes.

My thoughts were wrong- this is quality!
