  • Really no one has realized that's not what he's playing? Not saying he's not performing that piece, saying that's not the audio recording of it! Listen when he starts playing sounds like a huge hall or studio with reverb.

  • ive always been wanting to learn this song, but based on someone's opinion, does anyone know how difficult this song is to learn? i'm no expert, but willing to learn this bit by bit.

  • Beautiful sound!!! Love it! :)

  • You are a fantastic player!

  • Simply wonderful! Young people like you give me hope for the future of humanity.

I have written a piece for solo cello, but unfortunately, all my friends are physicists, not musicians, so I am looking for someone to play it. Would you be interested?

  • brilliant, absolutely brilliant.....breathtaking really keep playing the cello

  • W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L

  • Beautiful, just beautiful.

  • Bellissimo!

  • I really admire your cello playing so much. You are truly a wonderful cellist!

  • I shed a tear of Joy after watching this video.

    Thank You. :)

    ~Shadow

  • Very nice Nathan. The next Yo Yo Ma :-) I like what Tina Guo did with Bach also. My favorite rendition is by Mischa Maisky though. You will be a great cellist.

  • nice cover! amazing!

  • İ just looove little nathan. watch his video playing "the swan" when he was just 11 years old he's amazing..

  • Oh and by the way, 2:50 case is not there, and 3:01 it is, 3:10 its gone again. I strike again.

  • @Iceman11714 the window sill is in the way you idiot

  • Nobody that could play that good would inflate their head enough to make opening the case a big deal.

  • Poser xD

  • @JelloSniper and I think it would be kinda hard to fake playing the cello.

  • @JelloSniper Dude you have no idea what you are talking about. The reason that it sounds like that is because it was recorded with the microphone on the front of his cello.

  • @all the people who think its fake... the reason the sound doesnt sound like its played outside it because its recorded with the mic attached to the front of the cello, it's that little black rectangular thing. that sound/reverb is recorded directly into the mic from the cello...which is why it sounds really nice but doesn't sound like it's being played outside

  • @MrSomeBacon also, thats a wolf tome elimitnator glued onto it. -_- its the the mic is near the end pin

  • @cylcowenshen ohhh... thanks for the correction, I just assumed that the black thing was a mic because i knew there had to be a mic somewhere

  • @MrSomeBacon You're so dumb.

  • He's obviously not playing..you can't get that kind of sound/reverb when recording outside..

I don't know if he played the actual recording, but I'm starting to become doubtful

  • Fake....It's clearly has been edited.

  • @gutenberg80 he plays with chicago symphony. you cant edit live performances

  • @gutenberg80 your mum was edited to give birth to you:)

  • i absolutely love how hes feeling the music. You can see it with his face expression.

  • Truly amazing...so much body language as he plays...his feet were amazing as he played with all his heart!

  • Impeccable intonation! BRAVO!!

  • I don't know why they asked him to do this. Everyone knows you can't play outside like this for numerous reasons.

Sort of like when YoYo Ma played Cello outside when the president was elected. It was just above freezing....

  • @itsanthonyhere yo yo ma and the gang werent actually playing on their strads and good instruments. i hear tht it was a recording idk for sure :)

  • @LightningSpeedRacer It's not possible to play outside like that...it was like 2 degrees outside.

  • @itsanthonyhere for the inauguration? thts y they played a recording instead of actually playing on their strads and stuff lol

  • @itsanthonyhere It IS possible, it's just extremely difficult .

  • @SystemicMusicality How is it possible? A temp that extreme would warp everything and mess up the string's ability to vibrate. That's just the start of it. Now, you have to figure that out while trying to have the exact same sounds as a recording studio?

  • Comment removed

  • @itsanthonyhere I've played an outdoor event under freezing temps, you're right in the sense that it does hider ability to play, but it is possible. The video doesn't hint at an "extreme" temperature, just most likely humid.

I'd choose not to play outside, but I've done it before.

The music is a recording by Nathan Chan inside of a studio or a hall.

  • @SystemicMusicality Well my point was not that it is impossible to play outside in freezing temps, but that it's impossible to do so and have a recording with the quality of this video's sound. To make a video like this is over-the-top cheezy and sort of ruins the piece. If I were him, I would have said no when someone asked me to record the piece like this. Is it supposed to add to the depth of the song?

  • @itsanthonyhere At that point, I understand that. Personally, I'd rather be recorded playing this in a hall over being outside and having a duplicate recording played. :)

  • Watch his feet from 3:00 until the end lol.

  • so much reverb outdoor?

  • he is playing it...... but the music is dubbed in. yo yo ma played this

  • nerd

  • is the microphone in the cello??

  • aw... took the performance by yoyo ma

  • @UberNerdMan i believe that is incorrect, i noticed in the slide in 2:10 which Yo-Yo Ma did not do...

  • superb talent .. im a violinist in my family ,i hope to learn that piece hopefully someday if i will have time to play the cello.. i guess its much harder playing it rather than the violin .. but indeed its realy superb ..its naturaly played by you nathan.. so pleasing to the ears .. makes me smile when hearing this piece . :)

  • fucking fake

  • this is studio recording sound

  • @msuegri You're Right!! it's playback!!

  • Wonder piece. The tempo was just perfect. The feeling was in every note that was played. Please keep up the great videos.

  • Looking forward to the day when I can't predict the ethnicity of the cellist.

  • looks like the chan family has tons of money...u live in a castle or what'??

  • @Bobman4671 Yes im a violin

  • This piece makes me dream up stories and long for them to be real...

  • It's very good but the cocky look on his face makes me want to slap him.

  • Woah... he ended in an up-bow!

  • @Colethecelloplayer

yeah but he kinda played it as an open end

  • sound fail. Very well played...But it's a fake obviously.

  • @aesaether nope. he played the swan for hbo's music in me at age 11. don't hate, he also played with chicago symphony.

  • Awesomeeeeee!

  • I have never heard anyone better than you! That is great!

  • nice. very nice

  • Amazing!

  • beautiful BRAVO!

  • This is the best cello version I've heard so far. Nice, coz you put your heart into it. Play it agian and this time really put ur heart into the ending.

  • 3:00 looked like you were going to cry. How cute. HAHA

  • Loved it, thanks so much for uploading it.

I always disliked how cellists played the Prelude, how they play it so fast.

But you just played it perfectly. Good job.

  • Dude, you kick ass.

  • wtf 1:28????

  • Why does the environmental sounds suddenly fade away when he starts playing? It sounds like a record playing. I'm just wondering..

  • @Lolaxas im afraid there is definitely there is something fishy here...maybe he played in a studio then did the outside version overlayed?? the sound quality is superb--almost too good. -its not him playing outside for sure, and it may not even be him playing the recorded peice...if so -well he is a monster player at 16...i hope im incorrect but watch the music and the bowings an some of it looks like he isnt in sync with the music... great playing if so!

  • @PRODIGYat43 I play the cello and i am currently learning this piece and all of his movements seem right to me. It does sound super (too) good but that what he does. He practices and the sound he makes is beautiful not scratchy or anything (just like my teacher plays) and he probably has like mikes somewhere and then they edit the environmental sounds off. Nathan is freakin Amazing at playing the Cello and i hope i can play this song just as well :)

  • @EyesDntLie I play this too --very well in fact. there is no way this is recorded outside, unless he did it then edited it in a studio--punched out wrong notes, noises etc..i have since watched a couple other vids by him and indeed he is a good player-- watch ma-or rostropovich or starker and see the fluidity of thier bow movements compared to Nathans --this will show you what i am saying..his bow does not have the fluid movements or power it should have - just sayin'

  • @PRODIGYat43 I agree the sound was almost certainly recorded indoors. There's way too much echo effect and also the sound doesn't change when the camera moves around the cello. But it's not a fake as long as it's really him playing.

  • @Lolaxas Yes...it's a recording. Try playing outside right now and see if everything fades away when you're about to begin :)

  • @Lolaxas Because it is.

  • can u be my teacher my daddy says he pay u 100$ per hour contact me my dad also said if your dad made u play 5 hours a day

  • Comment removed

  • Funny how he moves his feet, they are supossed to be still holding the cello and giving you support... (At least theory says so) I'm not critizicing, just noting that ;)

  • are u like related to yo-yo ma?????!!!

  • i played piano.he makes me so wanna learn cello now!

  • that place is so beautiful where is it

  • It's really good ! But, if I can, I think sometimes it's a little slow. Otherwise, it's great ;)

  • I am impressed. Excellent. I am imspired to play this on my classical guitar. Bravo Nathan. Much aloha in your playing. Keep on sharing your talent and love for the art of playing the cello.

  • SWAG - Something We Asians Got ^^

  • what is that thing on the left side of his cello? on the front

  • @Shadow2945 that is a wolf eliminator, and wolfs are a too loud sound and causes uneven sound so it mutes it so it wont sound bad

  • wow!! me encanta que el interprete en verdad sienta lo que esta tocando! es muy hermoso! felicidades. yo toco el violin :D

  • get up bambeee.... you must get UP! :D

  • i can play this so easily and im 12...

  • for me, this is the correct tempo for this piece..

  • The location is absolutely beautiful. Would you mind sharing where it is?

  • All of you guys are fooled. This is overdubbed with Yo-yo Ma's passion and skill. Gtfo wtih this fake bullshit

  • Why is this put to a different audio?

  • i like how at 1:43 it looks like the camera man is a stalker

  • @MegaWill501 , you're funny but it's true! LOL.

This is a piece played so beautifully...

  • @MegaWill501 camera woman :)

  • it's not the real audio

  • what the heck? my cello is so much more high pitched then that! is it because i have a sucky cello?!

  • @Bastridges I was thinking the same thing...

  • has no one else noticed that this is an overdubbed track originally played by yo-yo ma? :|

  • im playing this on my cello and honestly im jealous

  • I'm a bass player auditioning for a concert and i'm wondering if I can have a link to the sheet music :D

  • Very well performed, bravo.

  • why does it sound like hes playing indoors?

  • @Zaboomafoo17 :) So much for "spur of the moment kind of thing"

  • @Zaboomafoo17 Fake!

  • Who cares about the tempo he's going? He has wonderful intonation and his tone is remarkable.

  • playback? the sound acoustics changed, would have been better to have the sound outside

  • Bien joué !

  • Parabéns, Nathan. Abraços from Brazil!

  • hehe 3:06 i love the feet. Seriously that's amazing I can't play like that. However take in to mind that I am 12.

  • WOW i am a violin and i am thinking about moving to cello i like low strings better!

  • @92348fyi Move to double bass with 5 strings XD

  • @92348fyi move to viola, easier to transition to viola.

  • @92348fyi violin is equally as beautiful.

  • @92348fyi haha I too play the violin and wanted to play cello ever since I saw people playing Bach's Prelude. Needless to say both instruments are awesome ..it's just that to me the sound of the cello is more human if that makes sense at all

  • @92348fyi You are a violin?

  • @92348fyi whats it like? you know... being a violin and all?

  • @92348fyi If you want to become a cello you need to be recycled first mr violin.

  • bow control

  • is it just me that thinks that when the song started, the music has already begun?

  • Nathan Chan - keep doing what you are doing! Do not listen to comments from people who are clearly not satisfied with themselves. You have a beautiful talent, your music is full of emotion - not just played from memory.

    Nathan, keep playing : )

  • Random Deer FTW!

  • Che el audio no es ni en pedo del video!

  • I LOVE it!!!!You are super talented!!!!How did you learn ti be so good at playing the cello??

  • 1:31 The deer's like "Da fuck you look in at"

  • @adamlamper LMFAO.

  • BAMBIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • its beautifully played, but the sound track and the video are not from the same source, obviously either its a pre-recorded sound track, layed over a video of him playing

  • this is my favorite song. I wish I could play it.

  • there are eight people in this world who are extremely stupid. This is my favorite cello song in the whole universe! :)

  • First came across the piece around 1985 on the tri-centenary of Bach & Handel. Got a Yo-Yo Ma recording later. Some people tend to play the piece like an exercise but yours had nice interpretation.

Nice performance. Looked rather serious close to the end.

  • es bueno

  • Nice recording. Is it YoYo?

  • @ob2kanob

It is I can tell cause I listen to Yo Yo Ma's cello suite all the time, there's a difference also in the texture of the song because it was recorded in a studio and doesn't sound raw like it should. Not that I'm doubting Nathan-chans skills but I don't see why any one would put this up if they weren't playing the suite, other than the fact that they love music

  • People, don't argue or criticize, just enjoy the music.

  • fake!

  • @orangekush3 how the fuck is this fake fuckin asshole hes gr8 at it u just dont know talent

  • @redrideriii because of the crisp sound quality...its a recording...clearly not played outside, more likely in a room or something...where are the birds, the traffic, the wind blowing, tree leafs dancing in the wind...these things are void in a supposed outdoor recording, that's why i call it a fake. btw, his fingers and bow don't go along the notes. listen for a change and stop looking at this 4 eyed gook who's clearly acting for the cam. cheers.

  • @orangekush3 Actually.. I think That really IS him playing.. He recorded it Inside a room so it would echo and sound pretty.. And in the video he just Played it again but edited it so that the echo sounding one is heard.. He just probably wanted it outside so that it would look more peaceful and more professional xD I dont think nathan chan would fake it lol :D

  • @orangekush3 Good to know that your a racist

  • This is the best performance of Bach's Suite No. 1 I have ever heard. And in viewing this, I can tell you, Nathan Chan is more than just

    talented.

  • Nathan,I like you:)

  • im crying :'D ow god yes !!

  • la música me recuerda mi violín

  • Keep quiet that camera! Its movements break the attentino to' the music

  • @soccerjuke4 jealousy obviously!

  • I looove the random deer! xD

  • SHIMIZU!!!>3

  • Comment removed

  • 8 people are mad they cant play this with such ease :D

  • While it was played remarkably well, did anyone else get the impression that it sounded like his bow needed rehairing?

  • @soccerjuke4 They're all jealous.

  • he is like a one man orchestra!

  • Absolutely AMAZING !!!!

  • The deer was like, someone haz gas:P, but on a more serious note, Nathan, you are one of the most talented cellists I've ever heard. Keep up the good work!

  • this might sounds really stupid, but does any1 knows what cello (i think atleast) part is played quite often throughout the movie Streetdance3d? for example in the start of the final act where they begin their act. i am looking for this piece a long time already but cant find the name. We would like to use it for a sample, please help me out! thanks!

  • how does the camera change angles so fast?

  • What's with that audio dub over? This was recorded inside bro... YOUR OUTSIDE! Something just doesn't add up.

  • @SavageW4A

cant you see the mic on his cello? lol

  • 2:57 Orgy face xD

  • @JaredMartinez02 Hey No its not, it shows how concentrated he is on his music and you can sometimes tell the differences from a good artist from a great artist by how in the music they are i think Nathan Chan is PURELY AMAZING!!

    I LUV YOU NATHAN!!! :D

  • @xMEOW18

I was being sarcastic, hence the "You Jelly."

I know he is amazingly talented, and you can see how the music perfectly matches up with his bow.

  • Where was this filmed?

  • Its Yo-Yo Ma's Son! :P

  • do you have the sheet music for this? cuz i printed some off but it doesnt have the slurs, dynamics, or bowings. if you have it that would be great:)
