Actually, the only reason they skimped on the life-sized puppets of kids was to focus all or most attention to the animal puppets. It drew more people into the world of Dumbo's Circus, trying to make the kids feel more immersed into the stories.

It's a simple trick, and became a very popular show among kids for it, because they want you to look at the main characters instead of the sides. As a kid, would you really want to spend time looking at a puppet looking like a 40 yr old man? Not me! ha!

Nice facial expressions on the Lilli character, nice character design,very charming.

But why do the other (puppet) characters look like something Siffle and ollie would reject?

Oh well, at least Lilli is a nice character (personality and design-wise) and seemed kid friendly.

Even as a small child watching this I remember thinking "Did they blow all their budget on the life-sized puppet/costumes and had to resort to crudely-made handpuppets for the audience?" The discrepancy between the main cast and those handpuppets always bothered the bejeesus out of me.
