My dad went to sea as a radio man in the mid 1930's and retired in the mid 60's but he still did a couple of more trips after that. He was in the American Armed Guard. He also had the SS Norlindo sunk out from under him by a German U Boat in 1942, So many stories - wished I knew all of them....
I like your video.I was in the British Merchant Navy from Aug 17th 1955 to May 20th 1970.My first ship was the Bloemfontein Castle,I was a laundry boy, then went to the U.C.L. catering school to train as a waiter. The best years of my life,I used to love the fact that I was travelling the world and getting paid for it and getting a good suntan as well.I also sailed on N.Z shipping co,Shaw Saville,Blue Star,Royal Mail, P.& O., Cunard, all 3 Queens, did cruising too.Great memories.
Good video, some old timers there (the ships, I mean!!) sadly just a distant memory now, quite a transition I imagine from the Bank Line Liberty ship (Kelvinbank) to the regular liner voyages with Union Castle!! Never got on a Union Castle ship, nor Bowater's, but spent weeks anchored off Tanga waiting for a berth on 'Clan Boats'!!
Still plenty of BBQ's on the beach to make up for it....happy days, thanks for the memories!
i am at sea for 8 years now...its been fantasic..good money..seeing all world and finally it made a tough and strong independent MAN!!!!!!!!!join merchany navy..money...power..and free world tour...
@sdun86 if you live in UK i recommend applying to clyde marine, to train in the glasgow collage of nautical studies. there are several collages in UK that train for this job but i thing GCNS is the best, and clyde marine is an organization that get you sponsorship and help you out alot. are you thinking about it?
@AtomicCheese92 yeah iv actually been accepted into the royal navy although i would have prefered this...its a 16 month waiting list for me anyhow so gonna look into the merchant navy aswell...thanks for the info
The sight of that lavender hull brings back so many happy memories - travelled, to & from South Africa, on assorted Union Castle liners as a kid, .... including the Winchester & the Pendennis, amongst others. Gave me an all abiding love of the sea that remains to this day. Thanks for posting this.
It was a different world when Joh Ham and I went to sea. We DID see the world and worked hard. Now, with container ships you work hard but don't see the world. In and out of port in a day.
I was at sea for 8 years like deck officer, now I'm working in the spanish Maritime Rescue Organization, but, I'm got some happy memories from my "Life at sea"...
The only one of them I sailed in was the Pendennis for six years, perfect size a ship. The QE2 was too big and the River Fisher too small. But thanks for sharing.
Looking for Tombs of Southampton, in Chandlers Ford
I recall seeing Capetown Castle in Southampton and thinking 'Strewth what a wonderful colour for a ship'. There is something about ships which is hard to describe. They have a kind of presence or personality. Maybe they each carry a cargo of all the hopes ever placed in them, from the boilersmiths and rivetters, to the owners and crew. This cargo is still there when they go to the breakers.

@1935RonK honestly there is no real hard work in the ship compared to the shore jobs.,
only power, money, enjoyment in the sea job
