What's funny is that it looks like they're just flapping their arms around really fast when actually, the movements are precise. A master practitioner's hands and arms land exactly where he wants them to.
Great! It's clearly visible that this is something authentic, a chinese martial art, not a fake - kick-boxing mixed with grappling elements, ground fighting and useless kinds of kata. Respect for the whole work of Grandmaster Henry Sue teaching white people an authentic chinese kung-fu!
I have to be honest.I REALLY like this video.Speed ,strikes everything about it.I would love to learn this.It reminds me of Wing chun does anyone know if Praying Mantis has any ties to Wing Chun at all.I believe these guys study Wushu as well.Is this considered Southern or Northern Praying Mantis any info would be helpful.Thank you. Truly Enjoyed it.
Wow, anyone learning a martial art for the martial aspect really should use this kind of contact in training. Learn to take a few real slaps... when you're fighting on the street no guy is going to throw a punch, stop an inch away from your face and wait for you to react. No matter how good you are in a street fight you're going to get hit somewhere... might as well utilize it in training.
This is a style I'm very interested in studying in order to improve my hand game (either this or Eskrima, for the same reason). Anyone know of teachers in the Baltimore area?
As always, most people miss the importance of training... That being said, These guys are training for reality! Their technique is awesome! as a Kyokushin fighter I have to say mantis style is a very strong style for close combat. in a street fight would be a challange. Would not win on kicks but would be tough to fight up close if legs are tied up.
@TPRS313 i agree with psychic but i will give you some advice on the contrary.
tae kwon do is a SPORT where you learn to score points with your kicks and dont do much of a damage in tourneys(semi-contact) so it will be hard to apply it to a real combat situation and i will go a lil bit further and say TKD is completely useless in a combat situation.
southern praying mantis is a MARTİAL ART . though i have no experience in it i studied wing chun for 3 years (similar to southern style kung fu)
@musclepieformybaby Tkd is a sport as well as judo and there are all sorts of tournements for different martial arts. A kick to the face is a kick to the face. Any move in a tournement can be used in self defense as well. Tkd is a very dangerous martial if used right just as any. People use martial arts as a sport because you just can't go around beating people up so you can do it leagally in sport combat.
@musclepieformybaby As a student of traditional Tae Kwon Do, I am insulted that you would try and pass judgements on an art you clearly have not studied. Not all schools of TKD focus on sport: mine is an example. Also, try telling a boxer that his martial art is useless in a combat situation because it's designed for a sport environment and learn just how wrong you are.
just asking guys? so this style uses nothing but hand strikes right? or are there kicks? or it sjust 99% punches? thx anyone that can reply i would deeply appreaciate it. Coz i have queries about this style
neither is "better overall". no martial art is useless, and no martial art will be able to reliably beat another every time. sure, people will have fighting styles that SUIT them better than others, but that doesn't make it better overall than other styles.
Can someone with knowledge on the matter give me the pros and cons of Mantis Kung Fu and Tae Kwon Do? and which is, in his or her opinion, better overall? Thanks!
@TPRS313 The pros and cons are also the separation. I've studied under TKD, and it is largely kicking. As Mantis is largely hand movement; it is difficult to compare and contrast which is better. Both are great styles with great technique, focusing on striking with different parts of the body. I suggest studying both.
all I know is this form and style of Kung FU is something I have respected since I learned and studied and performed in a martial arts tournament since I was a young adult and I ended up getting a first place trophy in Kata's in which i was very exited to receive. Both Karate and Kung Fu is Awesome!
I went on the website as well and it said that it's a complete style that includes grappling as well, does that mean it involves take down defense as well? And things like release from holds?
I would really like to train this style if it's actually that complete!
I really appreciate it. Very good kung fu video. Looks like good ving tsun. It seems to be direct, speed and the goal is clearly not playing with hands but hitting the opponent. Very good.
Overall they practice goh sao, very usefull and helpfull drill for fighting instinct developpement.
These guys are seriously hardcore. Some of the most hardass people in the world, and easily the most chill. I've found the nicest groups of people are the ones that can kill you without you ever realizing what happened.
I'll take the liberty to say this now: don't prod me about the first line, it's a joke.
I've been reading comments, either people recognize the efficiency of this style and understand that there is an internal aspect that dominates the style. Or they get it confused with/ reminded of wing chun. Or they just disrespect the style as inefficient because they think it's just bitch slapping.
I've done several martial arts, Hung tao choi mei, wing chun, hapkido/taekwondo, and I have to say that this style knocks those other ones on their none existent asses.
@zeventhirteen " this style knocks those other ones on their none existent asses" LOL u made my day man with that none exitent asses..but its true this style is deadly!
@zeventhirteen I've been practicing martial arts a long time. I have about 20 + years in JKD. I can tell you that no style knocks another style out per-say. It ALL depends on the skill and attributes of the practitioner. I'd say this style against the average street fight would be efficient but against, a skilled JKD man, Wing Chun or even a karate system, it would depend on the skill level of the practitioners.
@Jeetman63 Thats why Bruce Lee said: "I dont believe in styles anymore". He went beyond that. We are humans,.. how can we express ourselves totally and completely? Everything, not just the hands. There are no rules to this, there is no limit to this, there is no way that is absolutely better than the other way. We can all of a sudden break all styles "being like water" ( you cannot hurt or grasp it)... it adapts... it flows and then CRASH!
Cool vid mna !!! Btw mantis kung fu ONLY USE HANDS rite? they dont use legs? Coz they dont seem to train legs for kicking, they only practice the hands, thats why they are soo fast.
@MechPhantom they do use the legs but it is not as crucial. the style uses legs for tripping and grappling moves. these are mainly defensive and offensive and foundation and technique training. it is not as a whole an over view of the style. the average practitioner would use legs 25% of time maybe less. But yes, the basis of the style is the quick and deadly hands.
I have a friend of mine I play Kuntao Silat with on occassion,, who was a South Mantis player. When he goes into "Mantis mode", especially if we are up close and personal, it's down right frightening. In my opinion, this is the cream of the crop so far as Hakka styles go. The hand skills are unparalleled anywhere.
Real kung fu,no fancy shit ,just straight down raping techniques, i like it !!, Btw looks like wing chun, especailly the "chi sao" drill with the master
what people dont realise about this is they hit pressure points, hard and fast. obviously it is focused like a mantis on hitting hard and fast and praying mantis practicioners often 'bully' their body to make it harder and harder so it is tougher than their opponants - like a praying mantis exo skeleton.
Good stuff guys. We attended the 20th annual Chinese Martial Arts Open in Tulsa, and doing the "Continuous Fighting" event, almost every single fight wound up at this range. I can see the very high value of close range fighting like this.
I actually studied Praying Mantis Kung-Fu for 8 and a half years. The camera angle does not show their footwork, which is where all of the power comes from. In this martial art, as in many Kung-Fu styles, the power comes from the foot work. Any real martial artist/fighter will tell you that all good strikes come from the ground up. The attacks that they are performing are very powerful when they're not being pulled. They are also very location oriented and accurate.
@bliffix: Absolutely, I'm a Wing Chun man myself, and the footwork/strikes from the ground up concept is absolutely critical as you say. This video is awesome! :)
@bliffix ....WAIT! This stuff actually works?! So if you got into a street fight and you knew kung fu....you could actually use it?? I want to learn Dragon and Bak Mei. D you know about ether of them?
@bliffix It's true that the power starts at the feet, but when trying to promote your style and school, ignorant beginners want to be impressed. You have to amaze them. Once you have their attention and fascination, then, and only then, will they pay attention to the niceties of stance, footwork, and coordinating breathing with striking.
The more and more I watch this vid, the more I realize what GrandMaster Henry Sue has done to make traditional, old fashioned Tong Long more effective in the 21st century.
Wow...I do Capoeira but i still have to say these guys have my respect....id love to spar against one of them :D even if i lost (which i probably would xD)
Wow very fast hands. i'm only a kung fu wannabe but I am a physicist. Impact force (Kinetic Energy) = mass x velocity squared. these guys look very grounded when they "slap" . such a high velocity hit thats grounded will have massive kinetic energy. much more than any punch. How do their hands handle such high impacts with tiles etc and not get injured?
Years of training. It takes a LONG time to reach thier level, these master have spent AT LEAST 15-20 years training which includes conditioning of the hands.
They strike a lot of specific pressure points to the side of the jaw and top of the head. If just one or two shots done with any power connect, your world will be rocked.
Eh, Taekwondo guy myself. Judging by the movements of the style, however, there is power generated through rotation, breath, and the leverage of the use of bent arms. The style seems in particular to favor striking with the upper arm rather than the forearm. Although the surface area of the strike is the hands and forearms, it is merely a medium, since arm remains bent through most of it, forcing the center of gravity into a smaller, more condensed area.
It's beautiful to see traditional Wushu (War Art) which is clearly designed for self-defence. There is no question that these men can handle themselves in a physical confrontation, utterly destroying the rumours of impractical combat methods which plague Chinese martial arts.
I commend you brothers for this demo I like i and see the the effectiveness in it.I study traditional wing chun and I see some stuff I can use during sparring or real life situations.
NICE, NICE, NICE! My sifu just sent me this video. He is right, southern mantis is a real good form. The funny thing is that it looks a lot like wing chun/ving tsun. Great video, and I really mean that.
For a noob like me, this really looks like a very powerful mixture between Tang Lang Quan and Wing Chun. I like new mixtures of traditional styles, I think the art can benefit a lot from this.
Thank you for sharing this video, people seem to not understand how lucky they are to see martial artists at this level, doing these techniques. The technique at 4:00 was the last technique i used on my yellowsash test. ( i passed lol)
Very good! If all those hits were with full power and on the right spots (because those on the forehead were clearly meant for other places) then you can speak about a very destructive style!
I wish there was a legitimate place to train in Kung-fu around here. All we seem to have are jiu-jitsu or MMA. Jiu-jitsu is fun but the MMA guys are all macho douche bags.
This is not "one step sparring" so the power has to be generated and delivered no matter what position the feet are in. In relation to the power generation, GM Sue has taught his disciples the essence of compression, or Gung. An excessive release of breath means no compression therefore no power. The classic "Cheaah!!!!" in TKD and Karate is about one Chi/Ki sync per strike. GM Sue has developed a training method whereby multiple hits generate maximum power with each strike no matter how fast.
I saw a friend of mine when he was a bouncer take a guy out with Preying Mantis style Kung Fu. It looked just like these guys in the video. The guy was alot bigger and it happen really fast. The guy dropped like a sack of potatoes. I was like, "what the hell just happened"? It was wild. Nothing like the flying around stuff you see in the movies. My friend Practices a traditional form but the fighting technique looks totally different. Thanks for posting.
My sifu always says that flashy fighting is useless in a real situation and ugly looking fighting is effective. I train in Wing Chun and it's amazing how similar Mantis is to it. These guys are guarding and attacking the centerline, using lots of sensitivity training like Chi Sao. Awesome! A lot of guys get the wrong idea about street fighting. You don't close in on your opponent like you do in the ring. It just starts right in your face! That's where stuff like this comes in handy.
In MMA now you already have people pushing opponent's heads/faces to gain better positioning. This is just much more focused on a part of MMA already in use. This will only add to MMA. There are a lot of clinches that end up in a stall where more techniques in sticky hands could only help.
i've commented on this video already but i think its just so skillfull and brilliant thanks for uploadin this an i'm jus woundering is all southernmantis like this with the speed or is it your own style of SPM ? thanks again for this video
this is actually a very very rare form of martial arts. I learned taijitsu and got to 2nd degree but never finnished, but i never could find anyone to teach me this.
i dont think people realize how much power are in these hits when they are actually hitting pads etc... when i was doing it ( i moved couldnt do it anymore :(:(:() you really feel the power on the pads but great martial art for respect, self control and also great place to meet nice people
FINALLY, a video showing techniques in which the the attacker doesn't just do a lunging punch and leave his arm hanging out there while the "master" works technique (I've seen that done in so many other videos ranging from Wing Chun to American Kenpo to JKD).
Mantis looks like it could really be practical for the street. No wonder that was one of the few Gung Fu styles that Bruce Lee talked about with students. I'm impressed with mantis fist!
at first it looked like slappin and i thot the stance was a lil diff...but 1nce u watch and if you are interested enough to watch closly then it shows ints not slapping...i want to learn...tho i know no1 who could teach me...
wow guys if i'd live in australia i'd make sure that would be training with you, i trained wing chun kuen and as similar as southern praying mantis kung fu.. good work mans..
What's funny is that it looks like they're just flapping their arms around really fast when actually, the movements are precise. A master practitioner's hands and arms land exactly where he wants them to.
Think fast!

How do their hands handle such high impacts with tiles etc and not get injured?

@skymacca1
Years of training. It takes a LONG time to reach thier level, these master have spent AT LEAST 15-20 years training which includes conditioning of the hands.

This is kinda cool. From watching my pet mantis I can totally see how it translates through. really awesome.

That is some nasty looking stuff! Clearly, that would work well in the street!!
Gman6755 1 year ago
They strike a lot of specific pressure points to the side of the jaw and top of the head. If just one or two shots done with any power connect, your world will be rocked.
deosullivan3 1 year ago

Here's to you, gentlemen.

NICE, NICE, NICE! My sifu just sent me this video. He is right, southern mantis is a real good form. The funny thing is that it looks a lot like wing chun/ving tsun. Great video, and I really mean that.

i THINK <---( I said think), they mostly slap each other.
But fuck me in the ear if their attacks aren't deadly to normal people.
Moglis00 1 year ago
