this sounds like the more Classic Course of Action(s) that used to take place with record companies. I'm reading that in 2011, due to the influx of independent artists working their own way to the top, that a record deal is almost NOT the best way to go. regardless, I want a company to back the campaign and creations I'm working with on my own. I'm an experienced producer and if I tell a record company exec that I can pull commercial appeal if you pull me a crowd of listeners, then have faith.
We'll have to find better-working business models tthat won't have to sacrifice artistic diversity and autonomy in favor of commercial aspects as well as vice-versa. Especially vice-versa, as no artist can live without making money. My point: Market dynamics do apply, yes. But there seems to be a still existing strong lobby trying to RECLAIM CONTROL over ALL of the music market as they have had in the past - to the disadvantage of both artist and audience. No?
I agree on large parts of this and I appreciate you sharing this, Prof. Lange. As an indie artist - I have to be a one-man-show with ALL of it: I write my own music, I produce it (and when doing so, I'm trying to be aware of what target group I'l be addressing with a given song/track/album) and then I have to go and market my product in the specific target group. At some point... I'm hoping to be able to delegate certain tasks, especially the marketing part, as it is excessively time-consuming.
Thanks for the videos. They're always informative! This lady makes A LOT of sense. You better make sure you are going to be promoted...and try to have some hit songs lol
