  • It really is "I Will" in places at least. They must've known

  • @MrEnterthehole This song was written by playing I Will backwards and just transcribing it out.

  • Comment removed

  • I WILL.

  • @DocAuch22 indeed.

  • I seriously don't know why I never thought of doing this. This sounds amazing.

  • If you play "Nude" backwards, it almost sounds the same.

  • @hastyvictories Radiohead's producer made Thom record some of the lyrics speaking backwards, and then they were reversed to sound like they were said forward

  • it does sound like bejork's hunter but backwards

  • Radiohead recorded an electric version of I Will, then played it backwards, realised it sounded better that way and then Thom Yorke wrote the words to what it sounded like backwards; What a way to write a song!! Only Radiohead would think of it

  • this is I WILL, but they just played with it. i loved it. i couldnt believe any band on the world would do something like this.

  • at the end, it reminds me of a trolley or something being pushed over a bumpy surface. Or golf balls being dropped. ALSO it's very reminiscent of the ending drumbeat on Videotape. Could be just me though, I "imagine" alot of things ;)

  • 1:38 did anyone else hear "atleast hear me through", and 2:04 "hear me out"

  • sounds like I Will. alot.

  • @kcarollee Well, they recorded I will, then played it backwards for the song. It just has different lyrics

  • @kcarollee It is I Will, lol.

  • Amazing...

Sounds like a Tangerine Dream cover of the theme...!!!

  • Far out, i can't believe Thom learned to sing this, like this. Such an amazing talent.

  • @antipop84 I don't think he did =p

I think he just sung normally over the reversed track.

  • @hastyvictories Hmmm, interesting theory, Makes sense, but listening to the original, It sounds to similar yet unusual. To the point where I don't think you could make those sounds unless it was recorded backwards. The way it sounds when he says 'plates' backwards, the p doesn't flow at all and if you try to mimic saying 'plates' backwards, you really gotta try hard to get the pop into the p following the L which is a constanant not a vowel, and is very unnatural. Pretty damn impressive :D

  • I prefer this version of I will than the one that ended on cd

  • anyone know how to play this? it sounds amazing

  • IIIIIIIIII wiiiiiiiiiillllll...

  • qué buen descubrimiento che!

  • Not only do I hear the 666 Satan at 0:53, but do you hear "Satan is real?" at 2:00? PS - Huge Radiohead fan, this is a simple observation.

  • @Fablooligan

I don't hear those at all. I think you just want to hear that

  • Not only do I hear the 666 Satan at 0:53, but do you hear "Satan is real?" at 2:00?

  • 0:53 I can here "666 Satan"

    Am i the only one?

  • @ChrisZeroX Yes. I see what you mean, though.

  • @ChrisZeroX i hear "hey when you play something backwards people are definately gonna hear 666 or satan"

  • @ChrisZeroX Pareidolia my friend

  • genial :)

  • I like the string arrangement....now that I actually know how it sounds...good work Jonny.

  • very interesting.. I always wanted to know what this sounded like before it was reversed. thank you!

  • I love this

  • i will ;p

  • @jealjufri Yes , it reminds me ofI will xD

  • nancy reagan and starfox... good choice

  • @solvealways That's not Nancy Reagan, it's Barbara Bush

  • I was completely SHOCKED when you inverted color and flipped the image at 1:43. Pure brilliance there :)

  • I dont hear i will playing forwards.

  • this is actually thom singing forwards

  • You know Radiohead is a good when they're songs sound good backwards..

  • @PIVOTZ84 TRY NIRVANA THEY SOUND GREAT BACKWARDS TOO.....I MEAN LIKE SOME OF IT IS JUST WAY TOO AWESOME...

  • @Jamesijuana

It's not retarded at all, the point of the video is to show that its the same progression as "I Will" when played backwards.

  • This is actually an early version of "I Will" recorded backwards, ProTooled, then overdubbed with vocals and other instruments.

  • I dont know why but when i hear this song reversed, i feel like im going insane.

  • @willynillyism Like Spinning Plates (or would this be called Setalp Gninnips Ekil, lol) is possibly the most horrible, disturbing and maddening thing I have ever heard. I think it manages that feat - over a load of other stuff which is probably a lot more outwardly "horrible" - by being soothing and pretty enough to get right under your skin. That way it can open you right up.

  • @RH98 Revolution 9 backwards and Threnody to Hiroshima victims are still far more disturbing.

  • Sounds like Dante is walking along the seventh circle of hell, watching those miserable souls burn on the abominable sand and with the ashes rain. Sensitive as Dante is he feels how painful that horrible condition is and his mind starts spinning with the whole scenario in slow motion. Breathless, he faints, but in his dream the souls' plight is still felt, but in a stronger way, as the dreams can enhance our perceptions.

  • Sounds like there's this pale naked humanoid dragging on the floor towards your bad. He's got bulging eyes staring at you and his arm raised to catch you with it's/his long dirty fingernails. This song is actually sung by him; He says he's your lowest, darkest and worst side and that he's going to get you no matter what; he drools as he sings and approaches...

  • @Teodoroviski Haha, wow very creative. Do another!

  • Still hauntingly beautiful!

  • drum beats sound like from mass effect

  • The melody of the vocals in the reverse version of Spinning Plates make this a whole new masterpiece.

  • He played 'I Will' and 'Like spinning plates' at Musique Plus, check out the vids.

  • I have this feeling , radiohead knew when they did this ! it's a shame !

  • notice that its really taken from "I will"

  • It's an old version of I Will, but it is I Will. The vocal melody is the same. Thanks for putting this up (y)

  • As i've heard, Thom sang the words forward, reversed them, learned to sing it backwards (like this) and reversed it. bang: weird, warped final product. beautiful, at any rate.

  • does anyone else notice that the lyrics sort of relate. In I will he says that he will rise up, almost like a calling to rebellion, but when played in reverse he admits that he's just a clown, he feels powerless as if he's just spinning plates for our amusement.

  • I would like to reverse your mind if that;s ok to you.

  • Sounds like "I Will"

  • spinning plates is I will backwards

  • So cool!

  • the end sounds creepy

  • why didnt they do i will likes this

  • @bloodriver3 agreed¡¡¡¡¡ sounds fucking amazing¡¡¡¡ they make this song and then, became in like spinning plates.... then just decied to make a easy guitar version for i will sorry, my bad bad english

  • i will and like spinning plates, two wonderful songs <3

  • thom yorke was listenign to i will and he came up with this song after..i like this backwards better then i will actually

  • I guess there is a chance you are right but hail to the thief was released after amnesiac. So this would of been made before I Will. Unless he saved it

  • the band has saved songs for albums, there are even some songs on In Rainbows that date back to the 90s

  • The bass is being plucked! I never realized that on the album

    Great progression

  • this is fucking creepy.

  • sounds like the gates of hell have flung open and all the demons are rising to from earth in harmony.

  • huhaahauahaaha

  • this is why you MUST love radiohead such a cool thing

  • I thinm that studio version is better than live

  • i will, actually

  • It's even pretty backwards :D

  • @OlympiaOverdrive Listen to I Might Be Wrong: Live Recordings ;-)

  • I will..

  • It's I will!

  • this is really really cool

  • 0:26

    lol

  • esssso un gran idolo

  • hahaha this is soo funny

  • Comment removed

  • was the melody (what thom sings (not the words but the melody he sings too)) in I Will backwards too, or just the chords?

  • ALMOST better than the original version. This is actually much much more errie and disturbing...

  • Comment removed

  • this video is killing the original song's delight, and the quality is not enough high... but i wondered that this version really takes after the I will, you are right guys.

  • same instrumental, different lyrics...

  • while listening to this i started singing I Will, hahaha. This is really awesome.

  • because they are the same song

  • uhh, yeah, thats why i sang it lol..

  • oh lol, wasn't sure you were aware

  • wooow

  • !! skrow tI !!!! emosewa

  • Can anyone tell me if there is some sort of program you can download from a website that can reverse songs backwards, or even do other things like mesh songs up or whatever.

If you only know it being something you have to buy I wont mind if you mention it.

  • google: audacity

    it's free.

  • Thanks very much.

  • this program is everything :D

  • Sounds like Mass Effect music.

  • @CatalystDM Indeed it does o_o

  • i thought i got it, but i don't. i thought it was going to be something much clearer but i only recognise really small similarities which don't seem to be that identical anyway? someone help me out

  • The song I Will

  • yes i didn´t know this about i will version until now. its just brilliant. i started to sing: i will, lay me down, in a bubker... and you can really recognize the melody, really great.

  • wow i learned to know i will seperatly and now i just recognize the melody when i hear this

    AMAZING

    great!

    genius

i mean this is radiohead they are genius

  • Wonderful!

Loving the images you put with this too.

  • GREAT!

  • Thank you so much for this song. I've waited many years to hear the backward version.

After a lot of listening of the original version, I'm pretty sure that Thom sung only the first part backward.

I'm convinced that when he starts to sing the last half of the lyrics : "And this just feels like spinning plates...", he did not backward. The voice effect of the first part disapear in the refrain.

Anyway, this song is a masterpiece, on both sides...

    Thanks again.

    -g

  • Weird! Radiohead is absolutely genious.

  • Comment removed

  • .daehoidar ekil sdnab era ereht dalg os m'I . ortsim retsim no yalP.

  • this is how thom actually sang the song, then they reversed it

  • true say

  • seriously???

  • thats what i thought. My mate is a radiohead trivia fanatic, and thats what he told me.

If you listen to it forwards or backwards its fucked up, so either way its genius from Yorke i suppose

  • 3:03

that's the part where you can hear the cymbals playing slightly, why does it sound normal in the studio version though?

  • because they might have not reversed them

  • nah i think it's just an effect from a synth or beatmachine or w.e

  • wikipedia cite:

The song is built over the reversed backing track of an electronic version of the then unreleased "I Will" (which would later be released in a much different form on Hail to the Thief). According to Thom Yorke, in an interview with The Wire, "We'd turned the tape [of "I Will"] around, and I was in another room, heard the vocal melody coming backwards, and thought, 'That's miles better than the right way round', then spent the rest of the night trying to learn the melody."[1]

  • (...)

Thom sung the backwards melody. It was recorded forward then listened to backwards and he did the phrasing so as to create backward sounding words but it's sung forwards.

  • 0:27 ????

  • You got this concept wrong...

I will played backwards = Like Spinning Plates

  • this is true. they were workin on i will, and reversed it, and thats how they came up with like spinning plates.

  • yea but i will came out after like spinning plates

  • that duznt mean i will wasnt created first, they just didnt release it. nude, which came out on in rainbows in 2007, was played live on their ok computer tour in 1997.

  • good call. thought about that, didnt know if it was the case. wish i had capability to play shit in reverse there must be a lot of fun to be had

  • thanks for thisive always wanted to hear it

  • you're a smart cookie. of course I wondered why this wasnt up yet either. and of course, it's like a YEAR after in rainbows came out - but still thanks for your love of the music. do you happen to have an instrumental version of this track. either by the band or not. I do a lot of covers and I feel like singing and it just doesn't work right on guitar, Brian eno.... where are you? Whats up w barbara bush/starfox? is she a grey fox? star-cougar? gross.

  • not sure how to do instrumentals, there is software and used to be winamp plugins to make them. something about how when tracks are mastered vocals are almost always exclusively on only a couple bands of the frequency so all you have to do is find those and filter them out with an EQ or something like that. really i don't think the song would be that hard to cover on FL studio except for a couple of the weird noises anyway

barbara bush is no fox, maybe a cougar

  • fuck fuck fuck i had an idea like this and now i find out its been done lol by radiohead no less

  • you can still do it

  • OMG. i loved this song anyway, but backwards? i'm actually crying now. it is so beautiful, so lovely, i can't stand it.

  • pero like spinning plates esta al reves

  • pretty neat.

  • this is so beautiful. can't stop listening to this *-*

  • this is really beautiful

  • Holy cow, the resemblence to 'I Will' is freaky and cool especially in the beginning. I wonder if any of their other songs were produced in a similar manner.

  • i've got another one with I Will synced up to it :D should be in the tab to the right

  • @d3p3ch3mod3 where?

  • @d3p3ch3mod3 where?

  • I read about how they recorded the vocal track normally, reversed it and then took each individual word and pasted it so the words were in the right order in the origial 'forwards' lines but still in reverse. For Example, a line like "Hello, how are you?" would be "Olleh woh era ouy?" Hope you get what I mean

  • what?i m confused....,is this for real?

  • yeah it is

  • The song is built over the reversed backing track of an electronic version of the then unreleased "I Will" (which would later be released in a much different form on Hail To The Thief). To achieve the song's distorted vocals, Yorke learned to sing the vocals backwards. Then, after hearing them back, he sang the backwards vocals backwards again, giving them an uneasy sound.

copied from wikipedia, now we know.

  • Except Wikipedia must be (at least partially) wrong or misleading, because singing backwards vocals backwards AGAIN makes no sense. Basically, he recorded the vocals, then played them backwards and learned how to sing them backwards... That much is correct. But all that needs to be done after that is to reverse that recording, not SING them backwards again like the article says.

  • Playing something backwards and the reversed again will not sound the same as played forward. Wikipedia's got it right.

  • a remixed remix it will be back to normal.

  • actually he listened to the song bacwards and learned the melody of it. then he wrote down the lyrics backwards and sang the new lyrics with the reverse melody that he learned before. and once he had the vocals recorded, he played it backwards. that's why you can reconize the lyrics, but at the same time you know that the vocals are backwards.

    sorry 'bout the bad english

  • Reminds me South Park :P. With Chef's Girlfriend

  • I read somewhere that they were abducted by aliens and had chips implanted into their brains.

    That's the only possibility.

    /satire.

  • i'm positive that they do LSD and nearly convinced that they were abducted shortly after completing the bends

  • haha I'm with you on that one, man

  • hence subterrainian homesick alien

  • Well they wrote the song, played and taped it, then played that BACKWARDS, learnt it again and played that, recorded it, and rewound that and played that for the final cut. Hense the tre trippy sounds

  • I read somewhere they reversed it because it was the same chords as I Will. Though I Will came out later, though it was written in the 90's

  • we know.

  • I didn't...

  • its a better song backwards.

  • False.

  • yeah ive always wanted to do this too. wacky video man lol

    thanks for the post

  • lol @ the starwing battleship

  • i will

  • does the stuff at the end (beginning in the forwards version) sound like popcorn popping to anyone else? haha. good stuff, radiohead is.

  • Remember me I will!

  • sorry, id have a question.

  • backward is forward to me. For some reason i was born that why. hmm good question.if i knew the answer to that i'd have an answer.

  • the song originaly is played backwards. that is the music video.

  • autistic disorder?

  • I am the same way but in terms of direction

  • This version reminds of the German electro band Kraftwerk...... I like the retro electro sound

  • I remember reading an article with Thom Yorke saying something about Spinning Plates being the Where I End and You Begin melody in reverse. After listening to this you can hear some resemblance but it's definatlely not as simple as just taking a track from that song and playing it backwards.

  • ....nevermind. Just watched the I Will synched video. Guess the article had the wrong song.
