@hastyvictories Radiohead's producer made Thom record some of the lyrics speaking backwards, and then they were reversed to sound like they were said forward
Radiohead recorded an electric version of I Will, then played it backwards, realised it sounded better that way and then Thom Yorke wrote the words to what it sounded like backwards; What a way to write a song!! Only Radiohead would think of it
at the end, it reminds me of a trolley or something being pushed over a bumpy surface. Or golf balls being dropped. ALSO it's very reminiscent of the ending drumbeat on Videotape. Could be just me though, I "imagine" alot of things ;)
@hastyvictories Hmmm, interesting theory, Makes sense, but listening to the original, It sounds to similar yet unusual. To the point where I don't think you could make those sounds unless it was recorded backwards. The way it sounds when he says 'plates' backwards, the p doesn't flow at all and if you try to mimic saying 'plates' backwards, you really gotta try hard to get the pop into the p following the L which is a constanant not a vowel, and is very unnatural. Pretty damn impressive :D
@willynillyism Like Spinning Plates (or would this be called Setalp Gninnips Ekil, lol) is possibly the most horrible, disturbing and maddening thing I have ever heard. I think it manages that feat - over a load of other stuff which is probably a lot more outwardly "horrible" - by being soothing and pretty enough to get right under your skin. That way it can open you right up.
Sounds like Dante is walking along the seventh circle of hell, watching those miserable souls burn on the abominable sand and with the ashes rain. Sensitive as Dante is he feels how painful that horrible condition is and his mind starts spinning with the whole scenario in slow motion. Breathless, he faints, but in his dream the souls' plight is still felt, but in a stronger way, as the dreams can enhance our perceptions.
Sounds like there's this pale naked humanoid dragging on the floor towards your bad. He's got bulging eyes staring at you and his arm raised to catch you with it's/his long dirty fingernails. This song is actually sung by him; He says he's your lowest, darkest and worst side and that he's going to get you no matter what; he drools as he sings and approaches...
As i've heard, Thom sang the words forward, reversed them, learned to sing it backwards (like this) and reversed it. bang: weird, warped final product. beautiful, at any rate.
does anyone else notice that the lyrics sort of relate. In I will he says that he will rise up, almost like a calling to rebellion, but when played in reverse he admits that he's just a clown, he feels powerless as if he's just spinning plates for our amusement.
@bloodriver3 agreed¡¡¡¡¡ sounds fucking amazing¡¡¡¡ they make this song and then, became in like spinning plates.... then just decied to make a easy guitar version for i will sorry, my bad bad english

yes i didn´t know this about i will version until now. its just brilliant. i started to sing: i will, lay me down, in a bubker... and you can really recognize the melody, really great.
Thank you so much for this song. I've waited many years to hear the backward version.
After a lot of listening of the original version, I'm pretty sure that Thom sung only the first part backward.
I'm convinced that when he starts to sing the last half of the lyrics : "And this just feels like spinning plates...", he did not backward. The voice effect of the first part disapear in the refrain.
Anyway, this song is a masterpiece, on both sides...
The song is built over the reversed backing track of an electronic version of the then unreleased "I Will" (which would later be released in a much different form on Hail to the Thief). According to Thom Yorke, in an interview with The Wire, "We'd turned the tape [of "I Will"] around, and I was in another room, heard the vocal melody coming backwards, and thought, 'That's miles better than the right way round', then spent the rest of the night trying to learn the melody."[1]
Thom sung the backwards melody. It was recorded forward then listened to backwards and he did the phrasing so as to create backward sounding words but it's sung forwards.
that duznt mean i will wasnt created first, they just didnt release it. nude, which came out on in rainbows in 2007, was played live on their ok computer tour in 1997.

I do a lot of covers and I feel like singing and it just doesn't work right on guitar, Brian eno.... where are you? Whats up w barbara bush/starfox? is she a grey fox? star-cougar? gross.
not sure how to do instrumentals, there is software and used to be winamp plugins to make them. something about how when tracks are mastered vocals are almost always exclusively on only a couple bands of the frequency so all you have to do is find those and filter them out with an EQ or something like that. really i don't think the song would be that hard to cover on FL studio except for a couple of the weird noises anyway
Holy cow, the resemblence to 'I Will' is freaky and cool especially in the beginning. I wonder if any of their other songs were produced in a similar manner.
I read about how they recorded the vocal track normally, reversed it and then took each individual word and pasted it so the words were in the right order in the origial 'forwards' lines but still in reverse. For Example, a line like "Hello, how are you?" would be "Olleh woh era ouy?" Hope you get what I mean
