In one race, I think it was Phonix 1988 or 89, they showed Senna's feet. And that car had clutch. I do not think the semi-auto gear box was present up until the Williams 1992. Not 100% sure though.
Because back in the early 90's safety wasn't as big as an issue as today. I like the bumpy tracks because they produce better racing as it's harder to get your braking point right. Just look at the brazilian grand prix with how bumpy it is, havnt seen a dull race there yet.... I think all the track should be bumpy and they should have sprinklers beside every track with the option to turn them on whenever they want. That will kill a boring race...
I'm not sure, but propably with clutch. I've never heard about H-shifter without one. Hard to say, every car was diffrent then. For example Ferrari had sequential gearbox with paddles then (I saw that on Mansell's onboard). If you find something about this, let me know ; ]
That's a 3.5 liter Honda V12 actually.
The 1991 Williams was the first car to use a semi-auto gear box.

I stand corrected. Always thought McLaren went from turbo V6 straight to normally aspirated V12. You learn something new every day...

why is it that all the tracks in the early 90s seem to be incredibly bumpy?

Ayrton had to use the clutch for upshifting and downshifting. Heel-too braking was required due to a straight cogged gear box :)

Thanks.

I see he's shifting H-gate style but does he have to disengage the clutch to upshift or is it done clutchless?
