It is imposible in most industrial facilities to keep the tolerance in + / - six standard deviations, means an error in the order of 10 to the minus 10 . The 4.5 Sigma is more realistic, its 3.4 per million is in a single tail, for the accumulated probability from minus infinity to z= -4.5. In the other tail, for the accumulated from z=+4.5 to infintity is also 3.4 per million, so "six" sigma accepts 6.8 errors per million.
@MMZen Quality assurance is everything for an organization. By incorporating Six Sigma and other Lean tools, this allows companies to decrease waste (Raw materials, Logistics costs, and unnecessary man hrs) which increases their bottom line. Ex. Imagine producing TVs and for every 1M produced 2% were damaged... That's 20,000 TVs. How many people would you have to staff to answer 20,000 calls, returns, inventory management etc.? How many for 6.8 damaged TVs? It saves companies Million/Billions!!
No matter how you look at it, every company, large or small, uses 6 sigma day to day, whether they know it or not!!!! Sometimes they need a little help from an outside source
Check out The underlying law of nature. Bing or Google it. Discovered relatively recently, it is possibly the world's most useful knowledge. One of countless reasons–its understanding and application is the most effective and efficient means of improving the performance of any process.
Don't forget about the "1.5 Controversy". In reality, it shouldn't be called 6-Sigma, but rather "4.5-Sigma", as it all comes from the Z Function (Normal Distribution), and at 3.4 DPMO, the Z=4.5. The missing 1.5 was probably added for marketing purposes, as Six Sigma does sound better. That said, SS is useful in that it mentions the tools and how to use them together. The tools were already there, but it makes the emphasis on when it's appropriate to use them.
if you really need six sigma it's because you were too stupid to see the waste in the first place. A little common sense and a few brain cells will solve most problems not a highly paid
sensei or black belt to teach you corporate bullshit. If I would buy a large company, first thing on the agenda would be to fire everybody involve in six sigma. Just paying these people is a huge waste of money right there.China does not give much shit about 6sigma and they're still invading the world.
I am a SS Green Belt and Mfg. Engr by degree. The core of Six Sigma is the Process (transactional/manufacturing) focus. With all the paper work, and miscommunication, and finger pointing - you can expose all the BS and make a case. This is a method to expose waste and fine tune the future state that otherwise is "biz as usual".
Failure is probably not in the Six Sigma methodology but rather in the companies processes, data collection and analysis. A hammer is a great tool but it's hard to drive a nail when your swinging it backwards.
The very term "six sigma" is based on pseudo-statistical nonsense ... have a look at the article in Quality Digest on line this month ... "Six Sigma - Lessons from Deming"
George...I'm a GE employee who is working in India. Your vedio demo has changed my perception of six sigma. I'm a fan of Six sigma now. Thank you very much for posting this. I decided to purchase the book "Six sigma for everyone" to get started. Well..I was looking at the review in amazon site. How was it possible that the first sentence in this book is what I was thinking earlier :-)

3.4 dpmo ... based on stacks of discs, then a "correction" that later "wasn't needed", then a "dynamic mean offset" that doesn't exist !

Average explination. Could be shaper and to the point. Average companies are 50% efficient and 70% effective - where does this data come from?

His reference to Six Sigma being a snake is a very appropriate analogy.
Have a look theantisixsigmablog for stories of all the six sigma companies that are failing and the nonsense behind the hype.

I don't know why you say that. Please elaborate. I must say I like Eckes' hair. A lot.
