  • Both Hok San and Fut San styles can be expressive or aggressive. However I noticed Fut San players being criticized often when they are not aggressive enough because of their concentration on subtleties and Hok San Players being too "over powering". I believe that in both styles you must strike a balance while maintaining an emphasis that is inherent to that style (i.e. Fut San: strong; and powerful with some expression; Hok San: Be expressive and realistic with some power on crescendos).

  • I also wanted to add to the debate by saying that it is difficult to compare "Hok San" style vs "Fut San" styles. The techniques can be similar in some instances and very different in other instances.

Lets take stances for example. Very Traditional Fut San style of lion dance has strong concentration on low and aggressive Kung-Fu based stances whereas "Sar Ping" styles of "Hok San" lion dance has stance but not as much emphasis on it as the traditional "Fut San" style. From my observations.

  • ehhh.. everytime a video on lion dance gets very popular on youtube, it becomes a forum for political debate. I had posted a video for Boston lion dance and that caused quite a ruckus as well so believe me I know what I'm talking about.

I watch a lot of videos but don't always leave comments. The reason being is if you don't have anything constructive to say or that can be backed up as oppose to "you suck" you shouldn't say it. In terms of opinions, just respect other's opinions.

  • malaysia and singapore which lion dance is common and competition held yearly why not get help from there lik master siow or name sme porpular trp.(singapore)nam sieng lion dance activity centre/wenyang lion and dragon sport asst (malaysia) world lion dance champ/king kun seng keng get help from them.Plus it a competition Mc shld be slient n not talking rubbish

  • But in a lion dance COMPETITION, marks are give based on how real can the team MIMIC a true lion, not kung fu stances. So if u can show the expressions of a lion i.e. fright, anger, happiness, contentment... that's probably better than just jumping away whole day showing your strong physical strength. Subtlety is the key word here.

  • I come from a country where lion dance isn't unfamilliar to me, Malaysia. in fact, we even have a seven-time world lion dance champion in Kun Seng Keng Lion Dance Association, and i can only say that, if u think Hoksan style doesn't have any stance, u r wrong... dead wrong. Both Futsan and Hoksan have their finer points, and i won't comment much on either styles because i know exactly that both require strenuous training.

  • good job NYULDT congrats on your win again don't listen to the haters. just keep doing your thing. ninja~ drummer / Team Captain from Boston HC oh btw love the drum setup only the bottom part light's up?

  • Thanks for the support ninja. You guys did an awesome job too. And about the drum, the entire thing was supposed to light up but I guess we had some problems with it. I didnt even realize until I watched the video of us afterwards.

  • I believe we must come and embrace all cultures of lion dance regardless if it is Hoksan, Futsan, or any other styles. Just because Futsan style is more dominant than Hoksan style doesn't necessarily mean that it is the only "True" form of lion dancing. With the competition being a freestyle performance, NYULDDT won fair and square more or less because they put on an crowd pleasing performance.

  • I was at the tournament myself and i must say NYULDDT was by far the best team. they were so team oriented, mistake free, and the lion expression was unmatch. some of these other lions were wearing nikes. i guess mrjealous screen name speaks for itself. and i really think if your going to study kung fo, then stick with that and dont try to lion dance. i have to give NYULDDT their props. maybe one day i'll join you guys. by the way, your uniform were sick....!

  • I really don't appreciate the haters. You have no idea how hard this team works and all the struggle they've been through. If you know all the politics and fundamentals behind this team and have suffered blood, sweat AND tears with them, then say something.

  • Well said vickay ..... T.T

  • lol... this is really bad when a group got first place is being questioned on their placement. Then you have a few other groups where they did not place and is suggested to be placed. LOL!- Something to think about... (Not favoring anyone just some thought)

  • Congratulations to NYULDDT for the win!!!

  • for all u guys hating on hok san style... go watch genting.. NY united did a good job and congrats for their win.

  • yeh u right!!

  • Who cares? It was fixed anyways, and yes I was there. What's the point in having "secret judges"? - The True Champions

  • To the Choy Le Fut guy I saw a couple of your videos you may have some stance.. however they are sloppy as shit (in regards to the video posted by you peers). As much as I don't agree that this team is great but I must say it's organized.

  • I think maybe a few of you have never heard of Hok San style lion dancing which does not base its movements on any kung fu style. I like to believe that some say Hok San style lion dancing focuses mainly on the look and feel of a real animal as opposed to Fut San style lion dancing which has its movements and stances come mainly from kung fu. I am a fan of both styles and enjoy watching groups who are experienced in their styles.

  • did u go to watch tha to tournament?

again!!u could c the big difference when u compare with the choy lee fut and the columbia universitys team, they all got the very nice foot work, not just jumpin everyday

  • Yes, I was there, but I still dont think you understand that we practice a different style.

  • That head looks really light... you sure that's a lion head? Looks like it is for someone who know minimal amount of martial arts and training (weak probably)? I must say it's nicely synched (bravo!)..but not the best I ever seen. Plus I don't see any traditional martial art stances or footwork besides a bunch of simple no brainer footwork. Otherwise congrats on your win.

  • its a modern style. it doesnt need a hardcore martial arts training. my group does it, but im not a big fan of it. all styles require good stances and footworks to corporate together.

  • and the judges suck!

how come the champ could win without the kung fu stance and footwork?

i think the choy lee fut at least should be the second

  • its called hokk san and not the traditional fut san lion dance that's why theres no kung fu stance?.. and there is foot work unless your blind., not part of any of the clubs but you should atleast watch and learn a lil bit more on the various types of lion dancing, before you insult other ppl, i'd love to see you perform =]

  • dont fck with me!

    thats Malaysian style!!

kung fu stances are the main points of the lion dance footwork!u guy won't get the high scores if the judges were all si fu

u could c the big difference when u compare with the choy lee fut and the columbia universitys team, they all got the very nice foot work, not just jumpin everyday

  • shut the fuck up

  • rofl seriously..you dare mention columbia university? ROFL THAT WAS A JOKE..NO THEY WERE A JOKE..ROFL..YEA OK REAL NICE..LOL! THEY DONT EVEN KNOW WTF THEY WERE DOING? ATLEAST THESE GUYS SEEM TO HAVE EVERYTHING PLANNED OUT..SO JUST STFU AND UNTIL I CAN SEE U LION DANCE AND SHOW ME WHATS -REAL LION DANCE- ok?

  • columbia university just missed a good drummer ,but if u talk about the lion honestly they did better than on learn

  • Not On Leong..New York United Lion Dance Troupe.

  • so r u jealous or u insulting my group n on leong. we do hok shan styles. we win its not becoz we just jump everyday.footwork n stances are important but its not ONLY main thing for the competition. its everything combine not just the stances.when they sent out the invitation card it aready said whats the competition about.the 8 expressions for the lion.

  • go ask any si fu!!any real si fu!!

when u wanna show ur skill to others with a ground show,u have to do fut san!!!

hok san just only for the jongs!!

  • mrjealous if u think u good enough in lion dance why dont u represent NYC or USA n go to Genting for the competition..make every1 proud instead of insult other pples group.

  • hok san lion dance takes more than just footwork. there is a lot more to it in using the head. it's not just "jumpin everyday".
