@digitalobserver i suppose the game designers are just supposed to ignore the fact that the xenomorphs have acid for blood, right? If you spill their blood by shooting them. you are going to get acid on the floor., If you step in teh acid, it damages you. That is LOGICAL game design.
Oh and you can strafe in the game. The frame rate isn't that bad either. The game really is one of the best FPS games from that era, and it wasn't just a Doom clone, which really helped it stand out
It look like their using the first wolfenstein engine in Alien vs. Predator. If the had used the doom engine it would had looked damn better than this
Dude, the skiing game at the end of this vid is nearly identical to Tommy Moe's Winter Extreme Skiing and Snowboarding on Super Nintendo. There are a few differences though. The Super Nintendo has better sounds and music. How can a true 16-bit machine compete with a 64-bit machine. Oh now I remember, the Jaguar sucks balls. For Jaguar fans, the Atari 2600 was 8-bit just like the NES. I think there were more than slight differences between those two consoles.
Well you are right if you say that many Jaguar games are just mock-ups from 16-bit consoles, but this has nothing to do with it´s hardware... actually the super nintendo just has a 8-bit cpu... nobody complains about that it is called 16-bit... Sure Atari did market it as 64-bit and in theory it is 4 times more powerfull than the snes, but the games count and there are at least some on the Jaguar that would the snes never be capable to run... at least technical, I am not talking about gameplay!
That actually is incorrect. The SNES's cpu is 16-bit while having an 8-bit data bus. However a system or any electronic device should not be judged by only one spec. The CPU is relatively a small part of any system. The sound chip, video chip, memory, and how they are used by programmers collectively are way more important. Nintendo's innovation allowed them to make the SNES do things never thought possible. Do the math. Nintendo+SNES=EPIC. Atari+Jaguar+EPIC FAIL
Yeah, I see your point, but that´s exactly what you did comparing 16-bit to 64-bit. I don´t say that the Jaguar was a success, which we all know it wasn´t. The SNES was a success, but fail of the Jaguar was not fault of the hardware, which was superiour compared to any damn system of that time... the only one which was equal or better in some ways was the 3do and even that would have blown the snes away... technically. Beside that... even the atari lynx was equal to the snes ;)
Does the atari jaguar have a joybox? I heard they have been making joyboxs since the first systems and i need one for the jaguar controller. plz tell me.
American developers always tend to build a game with the graphics, story fluff & presentation first & then try to make the gameplay fit whatever half-assed or rehashed idea they have..
Same reasons, younger age. I was 5 when I first saw this game, and thought it was better then MKII. When I saw the game, I totally remember the katana health bar.
tempest 2000, doom, avp, club drive, atari karts, defender 2000 [defender plus was best plus pong2000]and not forgetting cybermorph which i found to be nr perfect..stunning game.
traded in my sega genesis with 20 games and shelled out 200+ bucks to get my mitts on this console. Also games cost 90+ dollars a shot. AVP was good, but I was utterly disapointed with this farce of a console.
I liked the Atari Jaguar, and I hoped it would make it because I feel it could have been something great, but just too many bad games and few decent to good games can't save a system.
So to conclude, I think the biggest problem with Jaguar was the games. The system might have had its problems, but if you look at the games, it seems either they didn't know how to make them very well or didn't try. A lot of them seem to be ports of earlier games, if you look at the copyright dates. So... *shrugs* a lot of them aren't going to be as powerful.
Okay... is this a bad console? Maybe not. It's like Dai-Katana. When you compare it to the consoles that were around when this came out, it was probably a good console. When you compare it to other 64-bit consoles, it's a piece of crap. The marketing and shameless derision of Sega and Nintendo just makes Atari look like asses, which is where Dai-Katana comes in. Compare Dai-Katana to games when it was SUPPOSED to come out it wasn't bad. But when it DID come out, it was already obsolete.
No, it's not 16-bits. ONE of the processors (the 68k) is a 16-bit processor, and it's mainly the boot processor (not the main CPU). The DSP, on the "Jerry" chip, is 32-bits, and while used mostly for sound can be used as the main CPU as well. The "GPU" on the "Tom" chip (the one that is actually marked "CPU" in the Jag) is 32-bits, with the Blitter and Object Processor both at 64-bits. And the GPU can be used as CPU as well.
if you remember old days of magazines and games, puta your brain in 1996, when the gods of magazines, Game pro, says: atary jaguar its a system of 64bits, but their games ar like 16 bits, and let me tell you, you have right in the technicall adavnatage of the atary system but thier games are bad, no hard feelings
The Jag was NOT 64bit. They used some very clever advertising so they could claim it was 64 Bit. It had 64 bit coprocessors but all the data sets were 32bit. They programming needed to make this a 64bit machine and behave that way was migraine inducing. Most programmers did not want to mess with it. Also, there were serious bigs AND the controller was VERY over-complex (I mean, 15 BUTTONS? Thats no console, thats a PC!!!)
No one I know has ever known about this game..prob because no one ever owned a crappy Jag to play it..but..a lot of ppl owned PC's and DOOM was blowing minds in 94..which set the bar for FPS..
The Jag isn't near as crappy as you think. Just cus idiots like Sean Baby say so, doesn't make it true. And no duh about Doom on the PC...that came out well before 1994. The Jag version of Doom was the very first home console version and it's very good for being so. At the time AvP came out, no other FPS on a console came close...except Doom. But the games aren't very similar except for the FP perspective. There's a lot of strategy involved in AvP, much more than Doom.
Actuall, AVP was a pretty fun game. Problem was, you can't make a system successfull with only a handfull of good games and a whole bunch of crappy games. I was one of those true believers who wanted Atari to make it - and wound up shelling out quite a lot of cash doing so only to be ultimately dissapointed.
LMAO @ club drive - was this a poor attempt at being stunts? im sure it was fun just like pong was for its time... actually no pong destroys that game.
By the standards of the time, the Ninga game was ok and not terrible. However you simply would've expected more from a fighting game made for a system that wouldn't shut up about being "64bit". The Club drive & checkerd game almost made me blow chunks! Even by 1993 standards they were horrible! The motor in club drive sounds like Atari 2600 quality music notes.
They hyped that they had 64 bits, but I read somewhere that only a fraction of them were for graphics processing, while most of them were simply used to enhance the small number of graphics being processed. That's basically trying to polish a turd.
Mercury, isn't that kinda simila rto Glacious from Killer Instict? What a peice of CRAP System Man im glad I didn't grow up with this -64 bit peice of crapzilla, ya it really looks like something from Atari thats for sure.. Wow. Junk.
club drive has the most annoying engine sound ever, i always wanted to play the AvsP game back when i saw the ads now it just appears to be a doom mod, ultra vortex (see above comment), and that snowboarding thing, holy CRAP. bottom line, i think the Jaguar had alot of potential but i feel sorry for anyone who paid the small fortune to buy it. Iron Soldier still looks cool though
