@ZX2Fast Of course, but I'm showing how to bleed em here for guys who are done with work. Good comment though, cause I get people all the time saying "I need my brakes bled" and I have to explain that if there is air, it got there from a leak that needs fixing.
i like that injector, they don't have them any where around here though so i use a similar method, but instead i use a vacuum pump and a custom made adapter for the res. with a hose on the bleeder in a clean jug of brake fluid, and just pull it up. same destination, different route,
Hi i have a 99 suburban. I've having problems with my master cylinder. This is going to be my third time changing it. For some reason it always leak at the grommit . I have no clue why it does this? Cuz u know Any leak Will cause air in the systems. Could it be the ABS module
Scotty Im a mechanic and ive looked around for tools like this ut i cant seem to find one. Where did you get yours? And hoping the place has a website so i can finnaly get my hands on one
would this method not make your master cylinder fail because on Honda its not recommended to push fluid back in to the master cylinder . pre mature failure ?
My moms '97 Blazer has no rear brakes, my uncle "repaired" them 4 years ago but now they're worse then they used to be. I went to bleed the system but you know how Michigan cars are, the bleeder screws are so rusty they feel like they're gonna break if I twist them and the rear screws don't even have notches on them anymore so you can't get a grip on them. I know they don't sell just the screws so is there something else I could do or should I just bite the bullet and take the POS to the shop?

@stingray300m pay a mechanic with a tool like mine to bleed it out then, air can be hard to get out. If there is no air, replace the brake master cylinder. Scotty

@scottykilmer Hey Scotty, my 1990 Nissan 240sx breaks need to be bled. but the bleeding nipples are seized to the break and the owner before me must have tried to unscrew them and rounded the nut. do you have any suggestions or alternative ways to bleed the breaks.
Hi scotty, since i already changed master cylinder,2 rear calipers, bled all 4 wheels to my 02 maxima & I still feel mushy on the brake pedal, could it be the brake booster? any suggestion, thx for your help...
part B: So I finished the whole bottle of 32 oz of brake fluid & when I try to push the brake pedal hard it still feel smushy(this is when engine is on & its in park, not rolling) ,its not like very firm compare to my other vehicles. what other problem can causing this? any suggestion? end....

@Scottykilmer whats the easiest way to change my brake fluid? It is completely black and sometimes the brake pedal sinks to the floor at a complete stop hope u can help thanks.
@ilovemyeg2sir pay a mechanic to use a power flush. Or, suck the old crud out with a turkey baster, then bleed all the wheels one at a time til they flow clear. Scotty
i had a lube job done on my truck awhile ago, & the guy wanted to "flush" my brake system. i think he wanted to suck out the brake fluid thru my master cylinder & then replace it...i said, no. wouldn't that have mess up smthing?
hey scotty, nothing to do with brakes, just thought i could get your opinion, what you think of new nitrogen v power shell gas, you think its better, i have 86 mr2, do you think cause of its aggressive cleaning agents, it will harm my old engine some people say yes, some no, just wanted an expert opinion.if it does clean gunk, is that gunk bad for going into combustion chamber.please let me know what you think, thanks.
@891trigfoot I really don't think it does much at all, after all, nitrogen is an inert gas, and the air coming into the engine from out atmosphere is already close to 80 percent nitrogen already., Scotty
Hy Scotty, a lot of respect first for what you are doing here! Second,..I purchased the injector piston shown here and I am gonna try it on my ABS honda accord 2004 car. Please give me a hope on how to actuate those abs valves or answer me if this tool will help me bypass that a little. HOPE and much respect ! Raz
@bondita nothing bleeds are completely out of ABS modulators except a scan tool that operates the ABS system, opening an closing valves to bleed air out. That always requires a dealer level scan tool unfortunately, blame the manufactureres.
Hey Scotty hows it going,i recently bled the brakes on my van but the pedal feels more soft now when i apply brake i have to push it down more to stop the van
I was told that you could not pump fluid back into the system because of a check valve from a guy from napa. Any truth to this? he mentioned a check valve?
@imickey503 that's nonsense, I've been doing it for years. when you take your foot off the brake, it has to suck the fluid back into it. Now ABS systems are cows to bleed out because they have all kinds of valves in them, they are impossible to bleed without a dealer level scan tool to operate them. Scotty
@scottykilmer Thank you! I'm headed out the door to buy the tool you recommended for my 1997 T&C Van. Has ABS, but i'm going to give it a try after I flush out the old fluid. Thanks Mr. Kilmer!
Hey Scotty! I was wondering if you can help me and my dad. We just changed the calipers on my 86 firebird they feel mushy and dont squeeze the disc tight. What should we do to stop this and get them working nice again? How should we bleed them? We changed the front two only
@RetroFan1992 bleed them like this, or do the old fashioned one guy pumps the brakes while the other opens the bleeder valves, right front first, then left front. Scotty
@tysondimmitt a car only needs bleeding if there's air in the system, and unless that happenned when working on the car, the system has a leak that needs fixing. Brakes never need air bled out if they have no problems. A bad master cylinder can suck in air and cause such a problem. Scotty
You made this video on my birthday :) I love your videos. Keep it up!
I have a question for you. What does white smoke mean? The head is blown you think?
After I start the engine, there is no smoke or anything but when the engine warms up, example I stop at the traffic lights, and I see at the mirror, white smoke is coming up.
@GokhanHere white smoke is generally a blowing head gasket. Watch my video "how to find out if your head gasket is blown" and have that test done. Scotty
@scottykilmer Here is what happens. After a while, I stop at the traffic lights and when it goes green I accelerate and see this white smoke coming up. Sometimes I see the smoke, sometimes I dont. Is using `steel seal` in an engine that has no blowing head gasket going to harm the engine or not?
sir i just change my brakes pads n after text the brake pedal goes all the way down what i did wrong this time cause the time before didnt happen everything was working perfect.
@armyperror1 yep , if you pushed too hard you could have ruined the brake master cylinder.Probably time for a new one now, it was on it's way out anyways if that tiny pressure made it go bad. Scotty
hey Scotty whats up. I had a lil concern over my car and it actually has nothing to do with the brakes. A few days ago, while raining, I ran through a large section of water. Well, first thing I noticed was that my AC wasnt blowing cold air anymore. It was only using the fan. Second thing I noticed was that my "Service Engine Soon" light came on. Now i noticed that my car kind of stalls to accelerate. Also, as I was trying to accelerate up my driveway the battery gave out. Please help.
@scottykilmer I think that is pretty obvious but those tires are bald to the point that there isn't a trace of tread existing. They should have replaced those long before that.
I was going to change my front brakes on a 98 honda civic lx. i discovered the pads were not in very bad shape, but i did have tor replace the caliper bracket because i snapped a bolt off. after replacing the bracket, i had to bleed the brake line after and it seemed to be fine, but before i got out of my driveway, the brake light popped on... my pads are fine, what do you suppose happened? how do i get rid of the light and make sure its safe to drive?
@Katmandu2 I've bled an ABS unit from 96 camaro, basically you bleed the ABS system first, then start farthest tires away from master cylinder (unless otherwise specified in the repair manual). I don't know if that's the case for all vehicles, I learned that bleeding the ABS unit last, leaves air in the whole system. Try the ABS first, then the other wheels and see if that helps.
as my cigarette lighter doesn't appear to have a glass fuse connection if i put one there could that do the trick ? i love your site i have just joined and love simplicity teaching Thanks
@maccasda find the power source for those and fix it. I often just don't waste my time, and cut the power to the non working devices and run a new wire with fuse direct from the battery. Scotty
You can also fit small speed bleeders to each caliper, it has a one-way check valve that you open with a quarter-turn. This allows one person to bleed the brake system effectively by pumping the brake pedal and keeping the reservoir topped up. Popular with motorcycles too, not sure why...
the whole point for me to learn things like this is so that i can avoid handing over my money to someone else. i actually check my brakes regularly, my wife's & all three of my daughters' also. a tool like this is worthwhile for me, and actually, it looks like something u could make urself, or just buy a cheaper substitute. after all, it just pumps fluid in...i find this very helpful.
I might have bitten off more than I can chew...I have a 78 Rockwood RV there is massive air in the break system. The back Dualies have me worried...Question where are the bleeder screws on those things? and do I have to take the duallies off? Thanks for any answer
@testbooster couldn't tell you, i never work on RVs since I got talked into working on one and it was a giant pain in the ass. If you do have massive air, fix the problem, the air has to get in there from something leaking somewhere. Scotty
@notmycupotea Suck a little fluid out of the master cylinder container BEFORE you do this is you don't want a mess. Me, I don't care, I hose the mess down when I'm done. Scotty
or you can use motive brake bleeding system which is fairly cheap.. about $60 or so and it pushes it normally through the master cylinder using air pressure
@wakawu yes, there's more than one way to skin a mule, but you need adaptors to fit each master cylinder with that, and pushing air up is always better than trying to force it down. Scotty
Good day. I had an accident in my jeep grand cherokee 99. Left front tire, stand the wheel moved, because it almost stuck to the chassis, question, repair the car is good or very expensive.
What does this have to do with the price of rice on Sunday? Dumb. Overflowing the master cylinder is just dumb. Guess this sort of thing MIGHT be a good idea if you don't have any friends, or everyone just hates you. Better stick to the original-- correct-- way of doing things. Stick to bleeding your farts with that thing... and btw, it looks like a cockpump.
Most contamination sits down at the caliper and when you reverse bleed the bracks like this it can send it back into the ABS system which has valves in it that can cause big problems. The best way to get air out of the system is to use the natural direction of the brake fluid to push the air out of the system, this doesn't risk harming the valves in the master cylinder. Just because it's an expensive toy doesn't mean it's a good idea.
@ponch37300 On the web site it says to never use this method of bleeding unless the system has been flushed using the traditional method. This tool can also SUCK fluid as well as PUSH fluid. They also state this method is not meant to FLUSH the system it is meant to BLEED the air out. Now this pump creates LESS than 10 PSI which is about how much pressure is made when you release the brake pedal after braking, so seals will not be damaged if slow/steady strokes are used.
Shoot Them Muthas,..Watch`em BLEED,..Yah,..Show`em Whos Boss,...Put it in and watch it get Hard,..Pump it harder,..Harder,.HARDER,..Thats It,..Make them BLEED,..and Dont ask Scotty,..Hes Into Himself,..dident ya hear Him,..Hes a One Handed kinda Guy,..Likes ta do it Himself,..Poor Lonely Boy,.all he gots is Brakes,..and there not workin right,..Make`em BLEED Scotty,...
$370 for this tool are you kidding me?! I mean if I took this over to a mechanic to just bleed the brakes I would pay for about 1/2 hour of work at even $80 an hour I would have to have my brakes bled 9 times for this tool to have paid for itself. Where as I could just pay a friend in cheese burgers to do it the old fashioned way.
@dpanderda Make a vid and show how to do that. I've seen vacuums made with a house vacuum cleaner and a glass receiver, but i' d like about doing that if I saw it done. Thx.
@mbandoni288 There are various different injector tools you can buy from phoenix, that's the top end tool, they have plastic versions for less than a hundred bucks. Scotty
@mbandoni288 True, but if your doing it yourself for others and you do mechanics is your way of paying the bills. Then it will pay itself off probably with in the first week of owning it. I hate having to go back and forth to pump it and check alone, when this tool would take out the need for a second person.
So after reading through a boat-load of coments I need a bit of clarification. If you have ABS (like I think most cars do) does this this method (the method in the video) work? Hmmm...anyone? Anyone?
I really like watching Scotty's videos. They are fast yet easy to understand and he doesnt waste time showing us stuff like taking off all 4 lugs; one is good enough. There are other guys on the Tube who are just as knowledgable but you'll probably fall asleep halfway thru thei vids.
I usually dislike when guys talk and does a lot of head and body movements, but this guy is so good that I overlook this little idiosyncrasy
When did they start moving the bleed screws to the low point??? All the vehicles I have worked on to date had the screws on the high point, and gravity bleeding was adequate as long as the master cylinder remained filled. Never any mush doing it that way..
There is a reason why more people don't bleed brakes this way, and its because the valves in the master cylinder are not meant to have fluid forced through them backwards. This can damage your master cylinder, which is why you want to force the air out the traditional way. Most mechanics know this.
@AmpegV4 that is a bunch of nonsense, I've been using the phoenix injectors for decades without harming master cylinders. Now forcing tons of pressure back through the valves is not a good idea, I agree with that. But this tiny little pump doesn't put out that much pressure. It's just a gentle pressure to move air bubbles up in the cylinder where they simply make small bubbles as they escape the system. Scotty
@scottykilmer hey scotty or should i say god! LOL ! do you leave the top off the master cylinder when bleeding brakes and does it need to be empty, how do you know when you have enough fresh brake fluid while filling the master cylinder.twon
@AmpegV4 My bigger concern would be not being able to bleed the old fluid in the ABS actuator. Applying some vacuum or a few psi of pressure will not hurt anything - what do you think happens when you press on the brake pedal?
@bltrrs Yes, you do the right rear first, then the left rear, then the right front, then the left front. It's furthest bleed screw away from the master cylinder each time. Scotty
Scotty, please help! I accidentally used acksle grease instead of break flewid. My friend Juan says that this no big deal b/c it makes the break pedal easier to push, . But I haul all 8 of my children and all six of their children in my '81 slammed Lincoln Continental every day. I am definately concerned!
That tire looks like it needs replacing.

Thank you for your help.
GokhanHere 6 months ago
@GokhanHere white smoke is generally a blowing head gasket. Watch my video "how to find out if your head gasket is blown" and have that test done. Scotty
scottykilmer 6 months ago
@scottykilmer Here is what happens. After a while, I stop at the traffic lights and when it goes green I accelerate and see this white smoke coming up. Sometimes I see the smoke, sometimes I dont. Is using `steel seal` in an engine that has no blowing head gasket going to harm the engine or not?

hey Scotty whats up.

But that leaves the old fluid in the lines that you need to take out of the system
stormtrouper2 6 months ago
@stormtrouper2 It pushes the old stuff out, and if you keep pumping, it comes out the reservoir, which you can suck out as it fills up. Scotty

Why are his tires so bald.
spyder4g63t 7 months ago
@spyder4g63t Cause he needs new ones. Friction wears all tires out eventually. Scotty
scottykilmer 7 months ago
@scottykilmer I think that is pretty obvious but those tires are bald to the point that there isn't a trace of tread existing. They should have replaced those long before that.
spyder4g63t 7 months ago
I was going to change my front brakes on a 98 honda civic lx. i discovered the pads were not in very bad shape, but i did have tor replace the caliper bracket because i snapped a bolt off. after replacing the bracket, i had to bleed the brake line after and it seemed to be fine, but before i got out of my driveway, the brake light popped on... my pads are fine, what do you suppose happened? how do i get rid of the light and make sure its safe to drive?
mountpunchmore 7 months ago
@mountpunchmore probably air in the system, low pressure makes the light pop on, also check the fluid level that makes it come on when low. Scotty

How do you get air out of an ABS unit ?? 99 S10 Blazer.
Katmandu2 7 months ago in playlist Brakes
@Katmandu2 you need a dealer level scan tool and knowledge to do that. Only way to do it, so pay a mechanic with that equipment. Scotty
scottykilmer 7 months ago
@Katmandu2 I've bled an ABS unit from 96 camaro, basically you bleed the ABS system first, then start farthest tires away from master cylinder (unless otherwise specified in the repair manual). I don't know if that's the case for all vehicles, I learned that bleeding the ABS unit last, leaves air in the whole system. Try the ABS first, then the other wheels and see if that helps.

The biggest problem with DIY'rs bleeding brakes is the most overlooked! DO NOT SHAKE THE F**NG FLUID!! LET IT SIT AS STILL AS POSSIBLE!
Also, throw out fluid that has been open over two months if it was not tightly capped!
cds12271 8 months ago
that jacket is mean scotty
Boostamonte21 8 months ago
You can also fit small speed bleeders to each caliper, it has a one-way check valve that you open with a quarter-turn. This allows one person to bleed the brake system effectively by pumping the brake pedal and keeping the reservoir topped up. Popular with motorcycles too, not sure why...

the whole point for me to learn things like this is so that i can avoid handing over my money to someone else. i actually check my brakes regularly, my wife's & all three of my daughters' also. a tool like this is worthwhile for me, and actually, it looks like something u could make urself, or just buy a cheaper substitute. after all, it just pumps fluid in...i find this very helpful.

testbooster 9 months ago
@testbooster couldn't tell you, i never work on RVs since I got talked into working on one and it was a giant pain in the ass. If you do have massive air, fix the problem, the air has to get in there from something leaking somewhere. Scotty

Wont the master cylinder just fill up and over flow? How do you remove the excess fluid and do it with only 1 man?
notmycupotea 9 months ago
@notmycupotea Suck a little fluid out of the master cylinder container BEFORE you do this is you don't want a mess. Me, I don't care, I hose the mess down when I'm done. Scotty
scottykilmer 9 months ago
or you can use motive brake bleeding system which is fairly cheap.. about $60 or so and it pushes it normally through the master cylinder using air pressure
wakawu 10 months ago
@wakawu yes, there's more than one way to skin a mule, but you need adaptors to fit each master cylinder with that, and pushing air up is always better than trying to force it down. Scotty

So, you're going to overflow the master cylinder doing this. How is this any better than bleeding it besides not needing two people?
spudsmac0 1 year ago
Most contamination sits down at the caliper and when you reverse bleed the bracks like this it can send it back into the ABS system which has valves in it that can cause big problems. The best way to get air out of the system is to use the natural direction of the brake fluid to push the air out of the system, this doesn't risk harming the valves in the master cylinder. Just because it's an expensive toy doesn't mean it's a good idea.
ponch37300 1 year ago
@ponch37300 On the web site it says to never use this method of bleeding unless the system has been flushed using the traditional method. This tool can also SUCK fluid as well as PUSH fluid. They also state this method is not meant to FLUSH the system it is meant to BLEED the air out. Now this pump creates LESS than 10 PSI which is about how much pressure is made when you release the brake pedal after braking, so seals will not be damaged if slow/steady strokes are used.

@mbandoni288 True, but if your doing it yourself for others and you do mechanics is your way of paying the bills. Then it will pay itself off probably with in the first week of owning it. kingstonzincfence 1 year ago
ok how do you bleed drum brakes?
Roguestatus650 1 year ago
When did they start moving the bleed screws to the low point??? All the vehicles I have worked on to date had the screws on the high point, and gravity bleeding was adequate as long as the master cylinder remained filled. Never any mush doing it that way..
dgr8zod 1 year ago
There is a reason why more people don't bleed brakes this way, and its because the valves in the master cylinder are not meant to have fluid forced through them backwards. This can damage your master cylinder, which is why you want to force the air out the traditional way. Most mechanics know this.
AmpegV4 1 year ago
@AmpegV4 that is a bunch of nonsense, I've been using the phoenix injectors for decades without harming master cylinders. Now forcing tons of pressure back through the valves is not a good idea, I agree with that. But this tiny little pump doesn't put out that much pressure. It's just a gentle pressure to move air bubbles up in the cylinder where they simply make small bubbles as they escape the system. Scotty
scottykilmer 1 year ago
@scottykilmer hey scotty or should i say god! LOL ! do you leave the top off the master cylinder when bleeding brakes and does it need to be empty, how do you know when you have enough fresh brake fluid while filling the master cylinder.twon
steeloable 1 year ago
@AmpegV4 My bigger concern would be not being able to bleed the old fluid in the ABS actuator. Applying some vacuum or a few psi of pressure will not hurt anything - what do you think happens when you press on the brake pedal?
sbakar 1 year ago
@sbakar Do you think actuating the ABS a few times by making hard stops can help with your concern?
Thegarmendia 1 year ago
scotty, does it matter in what order you bleed the brakes using the conventional way(working with other people) 2007 honda accord.
thanks.
bltrrs 1 year ago
@bltrrs Yes, you do the right rear first, then the left rear, then the right front, then the left front. It's furthest bleed screw away from the master cylinder each time. Scotty
scottykilmer 1 year ago
if i'm only replacing my brake pads do i need to open the cap of the master cylinder? and would that put any air in the system?
