  • "as you can see, it's kinda moving too fast to see"

    yes, exactly

  • I thought it was moving so fast because it got excited seeing all that porn :D The hard disk really is one of the the best and most amazing inventions ever.

  • I had never realize the speed, i knew how it's work, but never see like this before

  • the speed and precision is amazing

  • "Now it seems to be mixing and scratching a rap record. Apparently it wants a record deal"

  • Accent = instant lulz.

  • Holy crap, it happens so fast I could be convinced that this is a cartoon or something.

  • 1TB FTW!

  • Funny how they look like record players huh? I realy thought by now(2010) all mechanical devices like this would be obsolete to mass storage flash type memory devices..

  • @Fudgecave I think those are called solid state hard drives.

  • @Fudgecave They are obsolete, but flash memory is insanely expensive.

  • this makes you want to indulge in the history of inventions

  • nice 5400 rpm IDE hard drive. What is this 1998?

  • @krazyliljoo94 Cheaper to destroy, and a slower searching harddisk gives you more time to show it searching as well.

  • @YouLoveBeef Good point... lol im a ratard :P why the fuck would i destroy a 2tb WD black caviar

  • That's why I bought SSD.

  • wow thats crazy i had no idea

  • technology is unreal....come check out my sc2 shit in my channel....peace

  • @99Aton die in a fire nigger

  • amazing..

  • THE DATAR!@!@HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA!!!

  • that is realy cool

  • so if you defragmentate a hard drive it will cause the hard drive to have a longer lifespan, because it doesn't have to work as much moving back and forward reading files? correct?

  • @Trevor1182 It's not so much lifespan as it is efficiency, it goes a little faster since the relevant data is held in clumps, instead of spread out around the disk, creating fragmented data.

  • weird..

I actually saw that thing moveand I bet u guys can see too just look at the shadow under it

  • dude? can you do it in super slo-mo? we might see or catch some glimps that it actually stops :)

  • touch it!!!

  • @demonwolfdawg (rofl) !

  • makes you wonder not how it was built but in their right mind thought of the design? they had to be crazy. pretty sure it had something to do with the record player. but to relate all amounts of information likes this is crazy. things like this makes me excited that i'm studying to be a computer engineer

  • @66sucks what do computer engineers do?

  • I can't wait to see what this guy says about the 1.2 petabyte hard drive.

  • Hard drives will be completely obsolete in 5 years. Every new computer will then have a solid state drive.

  • @n3rdbear hard drives will be around for many many years. Solid state drives have very short lifespans under heavy use.

  • it was awesome to know how HDD works! I always wondered about this...

    thank you!

  • You sound like Murray from Flight of the Conchords and it makes me smile.

...I'm sorry, were you saying something about hard disks?

  • Suprise butt secks!

  • *balls*

  • Fucking hard disks, how do they work?

  • @EMOSSUCKABIGCOCK Fuckin miracles

  • holy shit is fassttt

  • @bigpie23 Yeah

  • ow gosh i dont know but i red "Hard DiCk" i dont know but ... why always thoughts of that kind are running through my head

  • Coming up on the Science Channel :

How it's Made : hard disks

How do they do it : hard drives

  • @LucaviAD and How Stuff`s Made : internal computer storage

  • @davidpihler

I went to Discovery Channel & Science Channel's webpages & suggested they air episodes on computer stuff. I have craploads of these shows dvr'ed ... never have time to watch them all but I enjoy them when I do.

  • Mental :O

  • Not to take away from the magic of hard drives, but to give people some concept of how hard drives came to be, look at the wikipedia entry on them. The first hard drives were HUGE, so platter movement and track seeking were a lot slower and more deliberate. The current state of hard drives would be seen as crazy sci-fi magic by the inventors of the original drives from back then.

  • @bigpie23 Fucking hard drives, how do they work?

  • Nice glass case . 5*

  • Now.. I wonder how in the world are one of these things built..

  • @Theonegamefreak By god-like precision machines?

  • Machines? God like? That's a sin.

  • @Theonegamefreak ...in a crowded sweatshop by underpaid laborers?

  • That's one clean sweatshop then.

  • @Theonegamefreak piece by piece

  • Super neat and very informative, 5 stars!! I wish that there had been something like this to watch when I was in school learning about computers.

  • Great video!

  • I love the part with the spinning hard disk in action.

  • SOoo not gay!! Coolness

  • So that's what a hard disk is xD

  • Hey, we "used" this video yesterday to learn how a HD works :) thank you :)

  • as i mentioned above ,,,

  • Yeah, one more time I totally agree with you!

  • Yeah, It's impressive what the human being managed to invent. The HDD is a piece of ART!

  • Great eheh! I have about 200+ hard drives in my collection :-P

  • reaaly nice video ;)

  • Those ' Time Warp ' Guys from Discovery Channel should have a look at this, so they can slow it down =D

  • no wonder HDD's have life spans of 3-5 years :-P

  • Yeah, seriously. I can see where those drives with the read/write heads that don't touch the disc would come in handy.

  • Really fascinating to see how this works.

  • I really really want to know how this hdd was setup to do this!, Would it have a different drive firmware? or is it a hidden demo mode buried deep in the firmware?

  • Thanks for those explanations that was just what I was missing of the HDD finding the tracks. Very bright

    Sim

  • damn they are fast

  • Thanks for this video it was really interesting.

  • needs LEDs imo.. haha

  • i like it

  • lol

  • I have a samsung 500GB drive in a external casing, last week I powered this hd on, and I heard a very loud screeeech! noise. Does anyone know what that couldve been and why that is?

I think hd's park the heads when shut down. this harddrive is in external casing, and when my windows shuts down the pc, I have to manualy shut down this disk. But I guess it will be properly shut down like the rest of the internal drives i guess?

  • If your hdd has an on/off switch, use it.

i have a cheap ext. hdd and it has an on/off switch on the back to cut off the power.

  • How did you made the hard to move the servo arm without an IDE connector?

  • I'm not sure, but from what i know about hard drives I can guess...

On my HDD there is a jumper(you can wiki it if you don't know what it is (Jumper (computing)) on the back of the drive (together with the sockets for the connectors etc.)

So... my guess is that if you change it to a specific position, the HDD will start in this "demo mode" as soon as you power it up.

I think that's it... seems pretty logical to me. :)

  • my pc fails if you leave it on for 3 hours then when you open it it says connect the correct hard drive then i just restart it again then it will function 2x the faster its no biggy to me

p.s i think the dude in the video is irish

  • touched one once scraped of my skin im never gonna touch one of those again

  • a maxtor i think. The harddisk in my computer is also 1.

    A 500GB maxtor 7200rpm.

  • What model of hard drive is that?

  • Why aren't my windshield wipers that fast?

  • i want that transparent cover toooo.....

  • where did you get the transparrent case?

  • Por favor puedo tener este video Hard disk con audio en español, o como puedo hacer para poder traducir el audio

  • i'm a technician and this is simply lovely haha

  • when you load a bigggg file and you hear a noise, thats what you're hearing

  • To put it simple its the arm looking thing inside the hard drive that vibrates really fast to make the sound

  • Amazing

  • that is so awesome, hard drives are crazy.

  • Thats awesome

  • nice

  • Excellent !, This is what i want to show to my student.

    Thank you very much

  • How enlightening!

  • you can see it a bit in the strobe effect. when you think of it, its pretty amazing any hd lasts longer than 30 seconds.

  • High presiscion, lots of engineering and durable materials makes the 30 seconds to about 8 years.

  • realy cool. where can i get one of theese ? i want it for my class.

  • wonderfull so nice.
