Coach Sommer, every time i try doing korean dips I get stuck on the way up, my butt seems to get in the way of the bar (what can i say, i like doing squats). Any suggestions ?
@pshieldsy I could explain it to you in my language better but you don't speak it so i'll try my best...i also recently started to do them (couple of weeks),i had the same problem...look at him carefully.. when you go up, you should do a movement with your legs, like to lean all of the weight of the legs forward a bit, not move the legs, just the weight a bit...sorry for the poor explanation, anyway you'll get them soon, good luck
Its not your butt that's hindering you in completing this excercise, its the lack of strength of the clavicular head of your pectorals. I had the same problem, and the solution came by accident after I built up some strength in the upper chest.
@conetthuerta I can do the exercise now. I'm still not sure whether it's because I've got a stronger chest, or because my booty has decreased in size.
Thanks Coach, I tried these yesterday and they are great. I was a competitive gymnast in college, and have returned to gymnastics after a 38 year hiatus. At first I was spending a lot of time in the weight room. Now I am hooked on GB methods.
appreciate of any heart that was facilitating me to see it is that where I have changed they do not have artistic gymnastics at the time I want to advance on part my ..... thank you very much for his attention
coach summer just to get an idea of how strong olympic male gymnasts are, how many normal pushups or dips would you say a strong gymnast could do in one go?
All athletes have varying degrees of endurance strength, but for higher level gymnasts pushups and dips are extremely easy. As an example a college team mate of mine years ago was a specialist on the still rings. One day we asked him to demonstrate how many dips he could perform in one turn on the parallel bars; he jumped off the bars after 100 - not because he was tired, but because he was bored.
Technically, any exercise that involves moving your body through space is calisthenic, whether it is weighted or not.
Did you know that the word "calisthenics" comes from two greek words, Kalos and Sthenos?
Kalos means "Beauty" and Sthenos means "Strength."
Calisthenics is the art of building beauty through strength, typically by moving the body through space. Added weight does not make any exercise less calisthenic.
For some exercises there is weight added when the athletes are ready.
@ericds33 LOL! Well, at any rate I think I misinterpreted the question. As far as I know, Coach does not currently have weight lifting in his program. There are quite a few olympic gymnastic teams that DO use specific lifts in their training.
Ok thank you. Now that I think about it, I believe I've seen you on Coach's forum. If do have an account, do you know if they are accepting sign ups? Because I signed up at least a two months ago with no confirmation...

why is this called Korean Dips? I'm Korean and I'm seriously curious about this
MetaIhead89 7 months ago
Because the person who taught these to me years ago learned them in Korea :)

I do these often, originally from just sitting on a bar, and falling forward, catching myself in the behind the back dip
fuckwackemcees 11 months ago
I do not recommend falling into this exercise. Korean dips should be performed in a controlled manner to maximize the benefits from this movement.

arent the joints damaged when elbows are fully extended ? Of course I'm asking will this happen after mounts of training.
BGMilenium 11 months ago
As long as the load being used does not exceed your current level of strength, why would a joint be damaged by articulating through it's normal ROM?

They are called Korean Dips because the person who introduced them to me many years ago originally saw them being performed in Korea.

@RioXavier I did faceplant too, but all my workout buddies Laughed so loud that the runners around the track stopped to see what was so funny!
But I'm still the one of the few who dares do them so it's ok! ;)

Hi coach. From your experience, do korean and bulgarian dips boost standard dip strength on dip or parallel bars?
Anthony

Of course.
Harder bodyweight exercise variations use decreased leverage to increase your strength the same as adding weight to a standard variation.

...and technically, your right, but for all intents and purposes, thats not how we use the word.
Some words are changed for ease of use and definition in common use, such as using calistenics for bodyweight.
There is no need to always be exact. Though, you did teach me some greek.

do you have use a bit of swing on the way up? its the only way i could do it

I can only go down, can't come back up. I guess if I go down slowly and just keep pushing back up I'll eventually get it.
