Toyota ordered to drop TV commercial for hybrid vehicle
· Watchdog rules that ad exaggerated car's benefits
· CO2 figures were based on American average mileage
A television commercial for the Toyota Prius breached advertising rules by exaggerating the car's environmental benefits, the advertising industry watchdog says today
At anything >40 mph and a hybrid uses >fuel and pollutes >global warming gases than modern diesel. Reason? Extra weight: batteries+motors to drag around. Audi A2 1.2TDI can run biofuel but with normal diesel puts out 81g/km CO2 and 66MPG at average 91MPH on Autobahn! Normal driving A2 gets 100MPG. Prius weighs 1.3T, A2 0.9 T
Sadly USA drivers ignorant of modern diesel tech. Only ONE % of USA cars run diesel. If 30% diesels then USA would use far less imported oil - in fact equivalent to all imports from Saudi Arabia! Prius is not a real world solution. Only of benefit on short trips/low speed.
indeed, I just love the prius design and its eco-technology; I'm not sure my next car is gonna be a hybrid or a prius cause they're very expensive here in europe, but it sure is gonna be a toyota! their eco policy is great...
Their "eco policy" is just an image to make money. When it comes to their manufacturing, they pollute just as much as any other automaker. In fact just a few weeks ago, Toyota was arguing with the US government that CO2 isn't harmful after getting a hard time for making the 13 MPG Tundra.
GM is the only company than genuinely seems concerned about the environment. They own the world's cleanest auto plant, and have reduced their global emissions by 40% since 2000.
Until GM comes out with a full-production vehicle as efficient as the Prius (and with a Partial-Zero Emissions Rating), your argument is reaching. However, I hope the Volt project keeps moving along as competing energy-efficient, sustainable technologies would help drive another automotive technology revolution - and beyond.
They already have 2. The Saturn Vue and Aura greenline. Then there will be the Tahoe and Yukon Hybrid, and then the Malibu, and then the CTS, and then a Plug in Vue, and then the Escalde & Silverado, and then the Volt.
And the System coming out for the CTS could be used in about 15 different GM cars.
A plug-in Vue would be quite awesome, as would a plug-in version of any hybrid car, for that matter. Good to see that GM's hybrid technology, like Toyota's, is being applied across the board to most models (and eventually all of 'em).
No one is saving America, but don't forget about the "domestic" manufacturers sending jobs to Canada and Mexico, too. So, it's Toyota's fault that the Big 3 automakers are havng trouble competing in a capitalist market? Hardly.
Toyota doesn't have to deal with the union, or legacy costs. They also have a huge advantage with the exchange rates. It's an unfair advantage. Also the Japanese government helps its automotive industry. The US government has only made things harder for the big 3.
And the US automakers aren't "sending" jobs to Canada and Mexico. They are making them. 7/8 US automotive jobs are from the US automakers. All the foreign car manufacurers combined make up only 12%.

Did you know that the full Enviroment cost of a prius (including fuel) over its lifetime is greater than a Land Rover Discovery !
The Enviroment Cost of the Magnesuim in the Battery's alone would be more than The total cost of a Fiat 500

Oh that Toyota. They're just saving America huh?
Never mind they have caused hundreds of thousands of US jobs to be lost. Those extra 2 MPG are worth it.
