If you don't mind, I would like to point out that rape is actually a lot more common in Japan than their statistics would have you believe primarily because of how they define rape and the severe lack of reporting on incidents. I have counseled a girl that was raped when she was a little girl and didn't report it until she was 25. I don't know what happened to the man, but she informed me that this is common in her culture.
One time when I was in Japan I was on a train and it wasn't all that busy, but an older gentleman was getting a tad bit too close and I did end up giving him the evil glare, after which he immediately skittered off. I asked my host sister afterward if that was right and she said that if I wanted to, I could also say "yamete kudasai" or "please stop" but a glare did the trick.
I heard from a friend's friend who is fluent in Japanese (parents are from Japan) studied abroad in Japan and one day while waiting for the subway a guy lost his balance and fell onto the track (he wasn't trying to commit suicide). My friend's friend ran over to try and help this guy and no one else bothered to help until he yelled at them to give him a hand. Does this happen often in Japan where people feel it's none of their business so they don't bother or is it something rare?
@TheJapanChannelDcom ya'll don't have to atk or confront anyone doing a thing to a girl if they don't like it and you're close to the girl or you could walk up to her calmly ask or invite her to come sit with you to leave the situation. if she says yes then ok but if she says no thanks just walk away. if a guy addresses you while you're talking to her ignore him since he can't be confrontational so you don't cause a scene don't give him attention. no scene,no harm no foul i think this can work
Pretty interesting, what you said that "Nobody wants to make a scene", even though the girl didn't want her boss grabbing her. Seems like the Bystander Effect at work.
I've just had an idea. It's a take on 'an eye for an eye'. If I see a girl getting groped on the train, I shall grope the guy (If its not like a sweaty greasy fat otaku guy)!
Thank you very much for all your insight on Japan! I started watching your videos yesterday and I can't stop. I plan to at least visit Japan if not move there some day (I live in the US) so I really appreciate the work that you put into the videos for us foreigners. I hope more people watch your videos before going to Japan so we can leave them with a good impression. :)
I agree. Give them a glaring look. I have tried to teach my Japanese female friends to do the same but they feel that could offend so wouldn't try it.
TBH, most of them are over 30 which is the cut off age in Japan to be seen as sexually attractive, so I think they might like the harmless attention (not the dangerous type) from guys.
I know the average Japanese guy would fold if talked to from a women in a motherly type discipline.
@queenblurblab So what? Lesbians are still women. :/ In Japan especially where homosexuality is generally kept on the down low, I highly doubt you'd get a woman grabber. When do you hear of it happening even in the west? Probably not even once a year. Gay paranoia is rarely if ever justified.
@seventhsheaven I find it rude that you assume my question was "Gay paranoia" or homophobic. I don't see how my question was homophobic. It was a question. Also I find your grammar to be atrocious.
Sound advice I think. I think most men in Japan are too scared of western women to even talk to them anyway. Of course, many consider western girls very beautiful but they are way too shy to do anything about it. Japanese people can also read the air in most situations so a hard stare would be more than enough.
the thumbnail of this video comes from an anime called the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya xD; its a pretty funny anime for those interested, a friend made me watch it cos he thinks im like the character "kyon." it really gets philosophical and nice at times & well animated.lol
Thank you so much for putting the "Chikan" problem to rest. I'm glad they do it as more of a joke than to actually harm you in any way. I was getting a little scared hearing about those kind of people that are on the train. I'm really protective of myself.I would probably try to kick any American person who tried to do that to me, but in Japan that would probably make an awful scene and I would look terribly disrespectful and be overreacting. I'm glad it's such an easy situation to solve. Thanks
Good vid. Oddly enough, this kind of stuff is popular in a lot of manga. Now they have these "carnivorous women" who occasionally turn the tables on the men which is interesting.
WoW. I can make a guy on the gang floor of an American prison back away with a look. I better be carefull if I go to Japan. I might accidently injure some guy seriously with a long stare. :) lol Sounds like a great place overall. (Japan, not a US prison)
Any culture will have good and bad. I really like how you clearly love Japan but are willing to give an accurate assessment. I am fascinated with Japan but frustrated when people cant or wont talk about the down side. I like your honesty thx
@alextoob1 lol Actually, I have never played any games. I just do it WoW because it just seems a bit more dramatic with the capital W but I see what you mean. lol There are probably lots of people thinking that.
I went to Japan and it was so weird on the train sometimes. Once I wore a top and when I got on the train I had guys stearing at me. I saw some guy try to go for my friend but my Teacher gave him a death stare :P I do agree that Japan is so safe I was in home stay and my sister who was 14 walked home by herself at 10pm and I asked my teacher why they let her and she said there is a law that say if you touch a school student is basicly Jail for them I love Japan and I cant wait to go back :D
i wish this place had men as respectable as they do in japan. me being a guy cannot believe what i saw when a girl ran yelling from a dance saying someone touched her. i hope the man was rightfully brought to justice.
My Japanese teacher who is from Osaka and a friend of mine who lives in Tokyo both tell me that rape is quite the norm over there. But it mostly goes unreported. Plus I notice that those weird comics they have in the stores seem to condone rape. Weirdest I saw there was in a toy store in a glass case there were these figurines depicting scenes from cartoons and one of them showed a girl slumped and chained by the wrists to a wall, with a torn shirt while some old guy sat nearby painting her?!?
You say rape is rare but given the sort of misogynistic attitude that you're describing in the video, isn't it more likely that a lot of rape in Japan goes unreported? Of course, I hope i'm wrong, but I find the whole "not disturbing the wa " attitude especially disturbing in these sort of cirumstances.
I know you've heard this about a million times by now, but as a female hoping to go to Japan, I really, REALLY appreciate your advice on this matter specifically. Your videos are very informative and educational to people like me who want to go there and do things right the first time around. Made by a foreigner, for a foreigner. I signed up to YouTube just so I could keep up with your vids and all I can say is: "Please keep doing more of these!" You have a fan for life.
@evilskills japanese people are really shy, so it is quite hard for them to get a gf/bf. So they instead harass other male/females. Im a shy person myself, and i do things like that (but to a certain extent) in Australia
Is it true that when there are a large group of girls in a train the men have to raise their arms in the air. As I saw it recently in an anime and was wondering if it was true. thanks.
what would happen if someone tries to do something in let's say the train, and well i know myself i would punch the guy or something but what would happen if i did that?
@TheJapanChannelDcom What if the man is physically assaulting the woman and possibly threatening her life, would you still go to jail and deported if you tried to do something?
@TheJapanChannelDcom I'll take your word for it since you actually live there. I guess since japanese have such a different mindset about everything....it's hard to accept their ways somewhat. it's like you have to sort of get used to the mindset just to live peacefully. I can only imagine your difficulty in getting used to it all. You must love Japan a lot to do it.
@Landofwoads Yeah but, listen to what he's saying. Apparently you can get into deep shit by doing that. But you know, if i did see things go to that extreme, I'd stop it anyway. Because I'd feel too guilty for not stopping it otherwise. Then again, I'd get scared that the guy might have a gun. You never know who's packing heat nowadays. Would I stop it? I'd probably try...but.... I'm not that strong and I don't know how to fight so I might be more likely to pussy out too. I don't know...
Remember it is the only country in the world to release child raping computer game and thousands of ppl bought that plus even their government intentionally turns blind eyes on these kinds of phenomenons. In this respect Japan is still computerized Pheudalism.
I am excited to go to Japan for a semester of college at the end of August. I must say, I do find the thought of the "chikan" on the trains rather frightening. I've talked to my Korean & Japanese friends and they've said to just avoid crowded trains & to sit down when possible. I am never assaulted in the US (I've been told I throw off a "don't mess with me" kind of vibe. I'm a slim 5'7 blonde, what's so scary?) I am trained in Karate, so I will have to stop myself from retaliating. >_<
this reminds me that my boyfriend ( who was born/raised/lives in japan ) keeps telling me i'll be stared at when i go to visit him. >>; hes a sweet guy, i just hope i dont get *too much* attention xD
From a Japanese and 30's view point, they are not familiar with foreigners. They are almost grown just among Japanese and can't speak English. So they probably felt awkward.
I've been lucky, nobody's tried to touch me at work - I HAVE been ignored in meetings though, which I think is probably worse (I've actually gotten up and left meetings in the middle out of protest, but that was a long time ago). Where I work now, most of the people in authority are women so it's not a problem. Yeah, I can handle 14 year old school boys. :D
Thanks for the videos! I love Japan and am learning Japanese and I love hearing about what it's like to live there.
Maybe im stupid or something, but it doesnt matter and is no concern to my question.
I m just wondring. As far as i know u said that Japanese people dont want to embrass others,so isnt sexual harrasment reverse to what you said?Or are theyjust examples which cant "keep silent" that much and do that stuff?.And wont it close doors for them?.And another question. If you have japanese girlfriend can u do some crazy stuff make fun of something, because you said that they like well mannered guys etc.
It's kind of sad that Japanese women put up with that kind of behavior for the sake of peace and not making a scene. I know that it's just the way things are done in Japan and that nobody wants anything to be wrong and I also know that women aren't exactly seen as equals to men and I suppose thinking about from their point of view, it doesn't seem like that big of a deal. But I still think that it's a shame that women are expected to just accept things like this.
I've talked to just a few Japanese friends about sexual harassment, and 2 of them have told me about 2 incidences each.
.
Twice they happened on the train, but twice were from cyclists.
.
In one case my friend a cyclist lightly slapped her butt, and for the other friend a guy grabbed her breast hard enough to be painful.
.
I wonder what the consequences would be if I saw it happened, and were to put the offender in an armlock, and drag them to the nearest koban (police box).
Being a girl, I can't help but wonder if my view is biased, but would it help stop the problem if girls became more agressive on the issue and took action on the more serious or repetitive cases?
Very very unlikely for something like that to happen....until all of the sexual themes in modern entertainment for them are taken away, along with their right to be able to genuinely joke around like you described and starts being replaced with the same fear of other people that the rest of the world has. Making both the 'assailant' afraid of whether or not people will treat him like a criminal and the 'victim' afraid of treating it like a joke to not come across as strange. Fear.
It is sad something like that still happens. I agree with you I would stay away from Tokyo unless I was going shopping for electronics. I would rather vacation in the small cities than the big cities.
Say I were to see something happen like Chousakan said... how would the legal reaction be if I brutally kicked the shit out of said offender? Especially if anyone messed with my girlfriend... god help anyone who decides that's a good idea, they'll wish they'd be put in jail instead.
@dumplingfriend Legal procedings, not to mention the eternal shame of knowing you helped to propagate the unfortunate stereotype of foreigners in Japan being criminals : ]
@dumplingfriend Yeah I can understand that. I'm not sure if it would be likely to happen to a foreign woman though...I guess that TheJapanChannelDCom would be more likely to know the answer to that...
Thank you for posting this video! I have been trying to decide if I want to move to Japan or not, and this was one of the issues that has been keeping me worried about it. After watching this, I feel better about going there. Thanks. =)
I'd like to ask though... how do the Japanese deal with more serious subjects of life like morals and virtues? From what I understand, they tend to shrug when something like sexual harassment occurs and stay silent on it knowing it is wrong. How do they deal with these things internally if they never address it directly externally?
QUESTION: How should a chivalrous male act in the defense of his lady friend in situations like these? I am sure they would be different in an office setting as opposed to on the street with a delinquent.
Like what if there are actually some women in Japan who does stuff like that (which I highly doubt) or like gay people and stuff. I'm not against gay people but I'm just wondering,,,
Oh, and I love your videos. I am half Japanese and half American living in Nagasaki-ken Sasebo-shi. I appreciate your videos a lot!!! Its a lot easier to see whats in the box when you look from the outside! Your pure views as a 外人 are really an inspiration to me! Huh, you probably thought you wouldn't have thought you would draw the attention of a fan like my self... sorry I'm a little drunk now. 外人同士頑張ろうぜ(^o^;)
@ManekiNeko28 ok i know 外人 means gaijin or foreigner. this i already knew but please tell the rest of your expression so we can all know. i am very curious.
my mother never even taught me how to defend myself., and here you are ( I know I said I would go away and leave you alone but i just had to say this.)
Living in Japan, I often see many things that are unfair... I believe trains should have 3 types of cars, cars for women, cars for men, and cars for couples and family.!
Good video! When a coworker of mine went to Japan he was coming home from some bars in an area known for it (may have been Roppongi, can't remember), and he is used to letting girls go well ahead to let them be on their way and not follow them. He waits for like 30 minutes and he realizes a) too many people, gotta start walking, and b) girls there aren't too worried about rapists and things like that, because it's a safe country!
Japan has the right to play hentai games and the like and to me, that is important. It's like they have the freedom of sexual fantasy, which is why their rape rate is lower.
That's one of the things that makes them awesome.

Jail, deportation and permanently banned from Japan, most likely.
Watch the next "how to" video.

@TheJapanChannelDcom What if the man is physically assaulting the woman and possibly threatening her life, would you still go to jail and deported if you tried to do something?
RedCrescentDemon 1 year ago
@RedCrescentDemon
This is Japan.
Live here 100 years and I am sure you will never see that.
(Must be pretty wild where you live.)
TheJapanChannelDcom 1 year ago
@TheJapanChannelDcom I'll take your word for it since you actually live there. I guess since japanese have such a different mindset about everything....it's hard to accept their ways somewhat. it's like you have to sort of get used to the mindset just to live peacefully. I can only imagine your difficulty in getting used to it all. You must love Japan a lot to do it.
RedCrescentDemon 1 year ago
@RedCrescentDemon well if you see that go and smash his little head in
Landofwoads 1 year ago

In this respect Japan is still computerized Pheudalism.
videouzleg 1 year ago
@videouzleg Think of it this way... it's better that they do that virtually in Japan rather than do it in real life like in the US.

If you have japanese girlfriend can u do some crazy stuff make fun of something, because you said that they like well mannered guys etc.

vampierknight111 1 year ago

Absolutely.
Japanese girls AND guys need to start saying "no" to it if they want to stop it.

Thumbs up.

Say I were to see something happen like Chousakan said... how would the legal reaction be if I brutally kicked the shit out of said offender? Especially if anyone messed with my girlfriend... god help anyone who decides that's a good idea, they'll wish they'd be put in jail instead.

WTF!? What kind of country au talking about.
I'm living in NY for just two years. But I realize that the humanity of Japanese is almost same as that of america.
And also while I was in tokyo
"I never saw sexual harassment occurring at the train"
This is the truth. I was living there for about 7years. And nothin happens.

I'd like to ask though... how do the Japanese deal with more serious subjects of life like morals and virtues? From what I understand, they tend to shrug when something like sexual harassment occurs and stay silent on it knowing it is wrong. How do they deal with these things internally if they never address it directly externally?

Good video! When a coworker of mine went to Japan he was coming home from some bars in an area known for it (may have been Roppongi, can't remember), and he is used to letting girls go well ahead to let them be on their way and not follow them. He waits for like 30 minutes and he realizes a) too many people, gotta start walking, and b) girls there aren't too worried about rapists and things like that, because it's a safe country!
eskercurve 1 year ago
Japan has the right to play hentai games and the like and to me, that is important. It's like they have the freedom of sexual fantasy, which is why their rape rate is lower.
That's one of the things that makes them awesome.
