this particular song is my favorite of the carpenters. around 2:10 and until 2:40, the oboe and strings really kick in...and because karen died so young, to me, this part of the song picks up an ethereal bordering on angelic quality. makes me sad and happy at the same time. sad that she was sick for so long and died young, happy that she was here in the first place.

I remember this song was on the Carpenter's "Horizons" album...Was it ever released as a single? And if not, shouldn't it have been? What a great song!
Too bad we live in a world where people have to write books about other people's misfortune & make other people out to be villians instead of just enjoying the music that was recorded for everyone to enjoy. Despite what you read friends The Carpenter family was close. Remember when the paparazzi followed princess Diana, & see what what sadly happened that night, well Randy Schmidt is doing the same thing to Karen Carpenter, except Karen's no longer with us,so fans get to endure all this crap.
I've said it before and I'll say it for the umpteenth time, Karen has one of the best female pop voices of all time, I say "has" because to me she is still alive in her songs, there is no comparison and there won't be for eons to come.
They say that everything happens for a reason but tell me what's the reason why this has to happen to Karen Carpenter. Everytime I hear her voice I ask why has there got to be this most stupid disease called anorexia.
@Percymony February next month is the memorial of her death. In 2013 her 30th year of passing. It will be very sad. I hope there is some large tribute show to her on that day in 2013. I have asked a lot of young people if they heard of the Carpenters and they thought I meant Carpenters who build homes! They have no clue who they were. Sad isn't it?
@rsvy913688How I wish that somebody would do a "Mamma Mia" sort of musical but this time using Carpenters songs. There are simply too many beautiful Carpenters signature songs that could also make a storyline with perhaps "Sometimes" as the last piece. Sorry Abba fans. I like Abba songs but I like Carpenters music more.
THIS was my favorite song AND album of all of them. I was psyched to see it on here. TRULY one of the greats. Great lyrics, great message, great harmony, great music!!!!
i'm starting to get really mad about all the music we've been cheated out of, becaues the powers that be decided it wouldn't sell, so it never got on the radio.
I have always felt that this song should have been the follow up single released off the "Horizon" album. A bit of a departure from other songs, but it works so well and it is one of my favorite Carpenter songs.
The band worked up to this level of music. It took a couple of years to get this sound. Plus, when the Carpenters were playing jazz, the "voice" was not employed ever. It is sort of strange that their music later depended solely on Karen's voice - a unique one. Of course, the arrangements of their jazz were typical Richard! Great music for any age.
This song was sent as a request for my mothers 70th Birthday .It was played on the local radio. It brings back happy memories of her for me.I can't understand why it s never on any compilation album. Its a wonderful joyful song!

hi this is chris 66508 the carpenetrs are amazung my favoutite is only yesterday thts he fabbest one and those good old dreams and we have only just begun, and loads more thanx
I still have a number of the Carpenters' 8 tracks. Still play them on the old 8 track machine. ((Yes, I have them on CD as well, just something about vinyl and tape that is unique.)) Naturally, wife, kids and grandchildren roll their eyes when I play the oldies, but TUFF!
I use to love listening to this song on my dads 8 track. I use to click the channel to the one before this song so i could hear it over and over. She is my all time favorite female singer. No female comes close to her range that I know, plus being a drummer makes her that much more amazing. I wish I could have seen them preform when they were doing daily shows at disney land. She does have a very haunting voice......Beautiful
This is a very catchy tune. I can't stop hitting the play arrow...I think out of the 37,359 views, 359 of them are mine, Their music has definitely stood the test of time.Nobody has or ever will be better.
@BRUC2016 I could have written that... I am in my 50's and my dad is in his 80's. I have always loved the Carpenters and have recently rediscovered some songs I wasn't familiar with.... like this one. The world was a sorry day the day Karen passed.... it was one of only a few days I actually cried as I tear up now thinking about her and her beautiful voice.
@shelmart1 I remember that day too and what made it even more poignant for me was that I had just bought the latest Christopher Cross album that day "Another Page" and on it was a song called "Think of Laura" about the untimely death of a talented young woman..........then I watched the news later that night and heard about Karen.
This from the Horizon album. This is in my opinion Karen's best performance. Gone is the uncertainty, the notion that she carry the recordings on her own. Every song on this record is pitch perfect. Her range and confidence in this recording make me breathless. Only Yesterday, Happy, and others are a testament to her remarkable maturity, range, and natural gift. Get Horizon for Karen at her best. Not too many songs, but all are gems, and Karen never misses.
That's because Richard didn't write this song. This was written by Tony Peluso, the Carpenters' guitarist for the majority of their career, with lyrical contributions by John Bettis and Diane Rubin.
He has his own performing art center. Do the checker out thing in your search engine. You will find alots going on. I met Richard in 2006. It was a brief moment, but what a high light in my life. I'm sure he is also busy with his family. He has a beautiful wife and 5 beautiful children.
I can't believe I'd forgotten this song from some 30 years ago. I'll never forget it again. Very nice presentaion sister lead 02. What celestial quality they provided! I should say provide.
I'm honestly surprised that no one has sampled this song yet. The guitar and synthesizer parts are almost like Air and/or Daft Punk, and would make an awesome hook. Just goes to show you how ahead of the time Richard Carpenter was (and Karen too!), as well as their collaborators.
That said, I love this song. The chorus is so hooky and catchy. It really should have been a single. Would have been a massive hit!
I wish this had been a single, (not on the flip of Only yesterday) instead of the draggy, sad summer modest hit 'Solitaire'. This is a perfect summer smash song.
It is rumored that I need to be in love was Karen's favorite song. Her second favorite was Goodbye to Love. After her sad marriage, she knew she was meant to be in love. So sad, yet poignant and personal. I only wish iI appreciated her more when I was in grade school. Now, I just listen in amazement.
Actress Wendy Malick looks pretty close to Karen she was in Just Shoot Me, Frasier, some other TV shows also. Thank You very much for this Excellent Video!!!!!!
this song was the Side -B of the hit There's A Kinda of a Hush , i remember i would paly it so many times when we had those old awful record players witha needle ,so many decades would go by before the cd.
Thanks for posting this, its a song that can truly lift my mood, such good pics, too. What a genius Richard was in his arrangement and playing, and then there's her voice, the voice of an angel.
There are some truly beautiful harmonies in this song; the way Karen and Richard sang them is almost shocking in its pitch perfection. Also, you have a real talent for presentation; the variations in your methods are really interesting. More people should be watching!

There are some truly beautiful harmonies in this song; the way Karen and Richard sang them is almost shocking in its pitch perfection. Also, you have a real talent for presentation; the variations in your methods are really interesting. More people should be watching!
