This is a really good attempt at the piece; well done mate! Hendrix in my humble opinion wasn't only an exciting, creative and innovative guitarist, but also an amazing composer as well; you only have to listen to Vilanova Junction to see that. It's the most wonderful and sublime piece of music.
@SudoDSLAM Thanks. No the wiring is all standard, they are just nice pickups and with a half decent univibe and wah, but it sound much better using my telecaster, I will upload it.
What's the chord you're holding at 1:20? I watched Woodstock videos of him and could not figure it out, now I'm watching you and I still can't figure it out...
@7byseven I messed around with it after my initial post and found 6x6788 to be the one that sounds closest to what Hendrix and you played. Otherwise known as A#maj9(#11) I guess?
@gcoxalaska Thanks. The bass was part of a midi file, it had a midi piano sound instead of guitar so I removed everything and just left the bass, I added the metronome sound later which I now regret, I though at the time it needed some kind of beat but it sounds horrible.
btw saw your video where you tame that horse, really fascinating to watch how they become les and less nervous.
i would come buckets if you woudl make a mashup between Villanova JUnction and Tender Surrender...sicne he Ol'LIttle STeve VAi "inspired" himself over Jimi's song

@alcram hi I learned it by ear over many years so theres not much i can say to help really. i dont use tabs so the positions i use are not exactly how hendrix played it.
@7byseven Hey no tabs needed. Just play it slower and make a stop here and there to show them licks. But believe me this might not be exactly how Hendrix played it but it's pretty darned close.
This is in my opinion one of Jimmy's best improvised jams (woodstock) that he ever did, it is dripping with feel, emotion, and its right off the cuff. You did a fucking excellent job keeping it original. Hey I really do like the effect your using, what is it? Is it a Uni-vibe? Please write me and let me know. Good going buddy...
hey bro i have to ask u something i recorded a voice file to my mp3 player:D i played the guitar completely by chance ,no scales or anything( i played also this song a bit in it) how can i upload it to utube with just one picture ? :)
@esraretin Easiest way I think is windows movie maker, you might already have it on your computer but you can download it free also. You just import your picture and song then drag the picture until its same length as the song then export them as a "new movie". I use sony vegas, same process but plenty more options.
Ah. Superb. You really got the feel aswell as all the notes and are spot on with the Univibe sound. Very nice indeed, bro. Also I never knew that Jimi did a behind the nut bend at 1:05. But now I see you doing it it seems so obvious. Cool. Thanks for sharing this. :-)
Do a search on Youtube for Steve Tibbets + Villanova Junction doing another cool version (acoustic) recorded in Lhasa Tibet.
Dude I gotta say, that was fuckin good. I never comment on other guitar videos usually because the quality/player's ability is subpar compared to the song they're doing. But that was note for note Villanova Junction. I know some parts, but definitely can't do the whole song as seamlessly as that. Not that you need the encouragement, but keep it up man.
U did a very nice job, just with the wrong sound settings. Or maybe recording is not so quality.... pickups sound harsh and more overdriven than needed.
If you were given Hendrix' strat, it would be comparable to his performance. ;)
@7byseven I know this sound very well, since I have Ibanez RG470 myself. These cheap ceramic INF pickups are so dull and flat sounding, that I almost gave up playing because of them, back when I was starting. I swapped them for Duncans, and put Original floyd rose, and now it rocks!
And there's a clip right next to yours, on right sidebar, with Jimi playing Villanova Junction on Gibson Flying V. So it does work with humbuckers, too, but his pickups were old paf-style vintage outpute ones.
@esraretin Thanks im no talent I just think if you dig something you will always get bitten by the bug. You should keep a guitar lying around just in case, thats all I did.
@Strummingkid Thanks, They are simple 2 note chords, hold down the 6th string at 5th fret and the 4th string at the 7th fret and mute all the other strings, theres a bit of a nak to it but you wanna be hearing just those 2 notes when you strum.
I'm a guitarist & have been performing for 30 years (& still going) & I REALLY enjoyed your effort for this incredible little piece that Hendrix simply improvised that day @ Woodstock. My favorite version by far & you did it the closest I've ever heard it; with the same melodic integrity this tune demands. SwwwwEEEET! I also like the fact that (like me) you're an 'ear' musician. Thanks for an enjoyable rendition. I'd like to hear you do Band of Gypsies live at the Fillmore version of Machine Gun
@Kazyman Thanks, thats not a tune im very familiar with actually, not enough to do it justice. I prefer "hear my train a comin" when it comes to that mode of Hendrix and I notice he sometimes used it on the intro to machine gun.
My friend, we have to get you on to a 60's Strat and a Fulltone's Full-Drive 2 along with a stack of Marshalls.... your touch is incredible!
You have the tune down pat! You are missing a few half and eighth bars when the Master did his magic in a couple of spots, but there's no question you can do this.
@RebelThoughts I only play to myself I hate performing even to family. I like the idea of doing session work but not being in a band, maybe 20 years ago id have tried some bands but my time has gone now. Thanks mate.
@7byseven Man, that's a great vid! Did you watch Woodstock like a thousand times? I will have to watch yours about that much to get even close. Thanks for the great tone, great feel, and a vid I can work from! Can you tell me what effects you added? Dist? Verb? Etc?
@btkinney Yea I watched the video for some of it and guessed the rest, improvised bits I couldnt quite catch. I used a boss me50 with univibe, OD1 distortion and compressor and wah wah.
@7byseven Well done !! Beautiful piece, i always loved it and also played it. But i've never got the rid out of the last chorus, it's tough, isn't it ?
I was looking for the real thing on Youtube but it wasn't there. Fortunately this was top of the list of alternatives. As it should be. Thanks Youtube and thanks 7.
@tokegod Ive always played by ear since I was 8. If I had to use tabs I wouldnt bother playing guitar at all far too lazy for printing our tabs and playing one note a minute for an hour.
Awesome playing, awesome tone, awesome everything. May I ask, what scales are you playing around with in there? I love the extra little ghost notes Jimi used that are outside the majors that give it that eerie, spine tingly feel.
Very nice. Never before have I heard such a wonderful interpretation of this song. If I turn away from the screen, it's almost as if Hendrix himself is playing it. Nicely done, sir.
@JimBozeman1956 I feel your pain man but I just improvised by ear on this track. I tried to make a tab of something once and failed badly, like I say someone has made a tab recently of this but I odnt know if its good.
Hey 7 I discovered that Jimi used his thumb to play the first 4 notes of this, or in your cover's case the first 3 notes, I tried this and it sounds more like Jimi's sound if you do it that way, also use your index finger and your pinky for the slide notes, and always use the thumb for the lower e 5.
Wow! Superb rendition of one of the greatest live performances of all time. 7 is an excellent guitarist and I commend him for what I'm sure was hard work in not only figuring out the musical details but getting the sound spot on. Thank you and Well Done!!!
@7byseven That's too bad, I'd love to hear the higher definition version considering the sound was very good as it was. The lower quality affected the video more I think, it's a bit slow and jerky. Hey don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining! One of the best on YouTube.
Wow! Superb rendition of one of the great live performances of all time. 7 is an excellent guitarist and I commend him for what I'm sure was hard work in not only figuring out the musical details but getting the sound spot on. Thank you and Well Done!!!
its bloody good int it, but see we got Aminor and then onto the Dminor bit and then its like and F kinda thing?struggle with this tune but ive always known the first bit but wanna learn the whole thing like the master here, help me jimi
@harrythegrass Thanks mate someone recently uploaded a cover of this along with tabs its not that hard to find. I didnt use tabs I play by ear so you would be best learning the tab for accuaracy good luck man.
@7byseven no man its really good, im tryin a learn it from the woodstock video the now but ur vids probably the better learning tool, how is that F chord played?its like an F then goes down to the Dminor thru the E,D# in the bass but what are the other notes?also whats the A# chord he uses?
@harrythegrass Thats exactly how I learned it, I always film at an angle you can see my fingers.
Im not sure which bit you mean, tell me at what time it starts and finishes. Like I say I play by ear so I dont know much about the exact chordage and notes im playing. All I know is you tune to something like Eb and its in the key of Am if im honest, the rest is just a noise lol
@7byseven yeh i always liked this instrumental dunno why, anyway that chord thats at about 1.23 that kinda ends that sequence, i think the F chord hes playing is just a pretty standard 7th or #9 thing whatever, ur right jimi probably didnt know the chords or notes he just knew the sound they made when it killed a man lol
great job, note by note, very precise.

@h1machiii Thanks h1machiii, it looks like they removed the higher quality 480p version it sounds rough and tinny now.

@7byseven That's too bad, I'd love to hear the higher definition version considering the sound was very good as it was. The lower quality affected the video more I think, it's a bit slow and jerky. Hey don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining! One of the best on YouTube.

@7byseven pfft, totally backed that rendition up. Can't trust utube to hold onto this for any period of time.

Hey, this is fantastic! One of my favorite songs ever. Do you sell a tab for this? I've been trying to learn this for years. Let me know. Jim

@harrythegrass Thanks mate someone recently uploaded a cover of this along with tabs its not that hard to find. I didnt use tabs I play by ear so you would be best learning the tab for accuaracy good luck man.
7byseven 1 year ago
@7byseven no man its really good, im tryin a learn it from the woodstock video the now but ur vids probably the better learning tool, how is that F chord played?its like an F then goes down to the Dminor thru the E,D# in the bass but what are the other notes?also whats the A# chord he uses?
harrythegrass 1 year ago
@harrythegrass Thats exactly how I learned it, I always film at an angle you can see my fingers.
Im not sure which bit you mean, tell me at what time it starts and finishes. Like I say I play by ear so I dont know much about the exact chordage and notes im playing. All I know is you tune to something like Eb and its in the key of Am if im honest, the rest is just a noise lol
7byseven 1 year ago
@7byseven yeh i always liked this instrumental dunno why, anyway that chord thats at about 1.23 that kinda ends that sequence, i think the F chord hes playing is just a pretty standard 7th or #9 thing whatever, ur right jimi probably didnt know the chords or notes he just knew the sound they made when it killed a man lol
harrythegrass 1 year ago
@harrythegrass starting with the bottom E the chord is 555677
7byseven 1 year ago
@7byseven Then play the following strings 6 432 123 4 2 while holding the chord.
