This guy was in a league far above everybody. No one has even come close to that kind of technical abillity. Anton Oparin might eventually, but I doubt even he will.
Idiotic statement about Petrucci and feeling. Yes, this is from 2 years ago from when I'm commenting now, but fuck, go listen to Hollow Years, Lines in the Sand solo, Glasgow Kiss from his solo album. Petrucci can be a master of feeling just as well as he can shred. You cannot base your opinion of John Petrucci on his shredding alone, you just end up making yourself look silly.
I love Shawn Lane's playing so much, it's so awe inspiring.
As far as his speed goes though, what I love about it (as demonstrated in this video) is that all his fast licks sound like they are impossible to play on a guitar.
Truly one of the best guitar players that ever lived.
Stop with all the guitarist arguments. Shawn and Bucket both highly admired each other and did things that impressed the other. I doubt either of them would have liked or cared about what any of you have been arguing over.
Shawn Lane will never be equalled in skill, technique, or raw talent. Rusty Cooley is fast, but nothing like Lane. MAB is good, but his tone sucks. That is what separated Shawn Lane from everyone else, his tone was so much better and more fluid. Being from Memphis and having seen him live a number of times I can tell you that he really is that fast and clean. Plus his talents as a songwriter and pianist far supercede Rusty, MAB, and others. Sorry folks, that's just the truth.
supposedly charvel is going to make him a signature guitar in the next few years even though he passed away the same guitar he used in this video as a matter of fact
y'know, I always had a lot of respect for his legato skills, but after watching this, I am flat out SCARED of his picking skills. Anyone who says Lane has no feeling obviously hasn't listened to his music, hasn't watched him play in a live situation, NOT these instructional clips. He had so much soul when he played, that he would make Satch, Vai or even SRV bow down in reverance. His playing is by far more intimidating than even MAB, and yet, people still try and diss him, I just don't get it.
ridiculous nonesense playing...he should of changed his name to "shawn LAME"!!!!!LOL jk hes one of the greatest of all time...im just jealous!!!lol R.I.P. SHAWN LANE!!! what a loss :(
some people have the abilety to make the simplest things speek somthing that this guy could of have never do.for example try to listen to hendrix and understand why all the covers people do to his music almost never sound good when their playing the exact same notes
don't ever compare that horrid sound to al demiola or petrucci just don't.there is no feel in this guy's playin and what's with that obsession with speed there are things that are harder to do than playing fast like composing somthin like fur elise or playing with real feel.
well al's style is great just how it is.... playing isnt all about speed and precision, look at hendrix, even though I don't own a hendrix album, and he's far from my favorite, the reason he recieves notoriety even today is because he played with soul... same thing goes even for a player like stevie ray,,
Shawn Lane was and is a legend for thsoe who say he just plays random notes all I have to say is that read the description this from an intructional DVD it's not his music he is was a prodigy and still is Jason Becker,Allan Holdswroth,Shawn Lane,John Petrucci,Al Demialo,Steve Morse,Marty Friedman,Paul Gilbert, and Bucket Head! Some of the greates people out there!
Yes, Shawn Lane's family owns the right to pretty much every Shawn Lane clip on youtube, because almost all of the Shawn Lane youtube clips are from the DVD's that they sell. However, I know many who have discovered Shawn Lane through youtube clips like these and then have went on to buy his music and DVDs from Shawn's family. If someone uploaded the entire Shawn Lane instructional video - THEN I could see the problem with it.
Holy crap, that's insane!! Sometimes it seems like he's just throwing his hand around doing whatever but he's not every note rings out perfectly it's amazing!!!
Some people can't read the description of the video. Go buy his albums. They're on itunes for 10 bucks a piece. I love the song "the way it has to be". There are a few fast licks but its mostly just some good melody. The guy was great. Get over it.
Guys this is instructional video for God's sake. Check his brilliant work and then express your opinion.
His arrpeggios are exotic. I have been listening to metal-shred stuff for 20 years and I have not seen something more difficult than this. THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYER OF ALL TIME.
greatest ever by far?, don't insult all of the greats out there, and the guitar history that's been made, with idiotic statements, especially with this dim/wholetone soup, you want excercises? buy a book, shame he died young though, too bad the music is expressionless. Sounds like excercises strung together, what audience was he targeting? he cut everyone out within listening range, what a mess and a waste of talent. this belongs in a book of licks. this is boring, not music.
SBE1 its actualy sound good for me. realy you think that thechnical speed for speed but men play at this speed is like flying in heaven! Poeple who heard shred and dont know music.. will say its shit. but someone who actualy know what shred is will say its emotion its a sorte of "anger". sorry man... but its actualy sound good to me and that about taste say that you dont like it is a thing.. but say it sound bad is another
no he doesnt, the only superior he has is shawn lane, and petrucci writing abilities are out of this world, he write insane lyrics that go that suit his singer and lane writes instrumentals...
His playing is totally unique and full of amazing, sophisticated ideas. The reason some call it monotonous seems to have more to do with the speed at which his thoughts are expressed, rather than the content of said thoughts. One thing's for sure; it ain't mindless shredding, or speed for speed's sake.
Wow, I had no idea Shawn was so violent. That's a shocker. Not sure of the relevence of Gambale's fashion sense, or his sexual orientation. Or what qualifies 408's asinine remarks as "homosexual".
I've been a big Holdsworth fan for years, but I now love Lane just as much. They are both incredible, and with totally different styles. They were fans of each other. How can you decide who's "better", when they both have such wonderful, and unique gifts? Why does it matter? Just enjoy, and be thankful.
Those amazing note flurries contain brilliant and beautiful phrases, if you can take it in. It's too intense for some; understandable, but to say that it's "too fast" is simply a statement of your own limits as a listener. It's silly to fault the artist for your limitations.
Soul and musicality have no speed limit. The ideas and passion in the duet with the drummer are awe inspiring if you can hear them. The limitations are yours, not his.
Sorry Gregorypeckory. The "technical ability" is awe inspiring. Yes. But even Lane says that "it's a cool thing to do - EVERY NOW AND AGAIN - to sound out of the box." You have to use that technique sparingly. It's hard to listen to more than 30 secs of that. 1:43 - 3:57 gets old fast. Yes, that's my limitation. Although a bit of "soul" peaked through at around 3:24-:26.
We're talking about two different things. The duet with the drummer wasn't just a bunch of repeating diminshed licks. It's kind of useless arguing whether a performance has "soul", an impossible quality to define, let alone measure. I'll never talk you into loving it, and you won't talk me out of it. So be it.
i say the same.. nobody comes close shawn... just a note: he only studied technique until his 17 years old! There's an old video of him with 17 yo and he has pratically the same technique...
he destroys almost everyone at speed.. heard some close people but no one that insane.. and he was pretty unmelodic when he was 17, i saw that video too..
Shawn was a great player no doubt. A genius in fact. No-one can call him "shit" even if you hate jazz fusion. I'm primarily a neoclassical dude but i love this playing too. Lane can do emotion- check out Grey Pianos Flying & Get You Back if you think he can't. His tech is insane, my bruv who is into urban music was awe struck when i showed him my Power Solos vid.
