Wow..my first memory of this is from 1966 In the Army. It's as fabulous now as the first day I heard it. I never tire hearing this beautiful voice tied to such spectacular lyrics.. Beyond description..it is timeless and superb..
A música So many Stars, retrata a grandeza do arranjo e a bateria e a percussão emoldurando a peça musical que fica guardada nos nossos ouvidos.Obrigado.
This version was going through my head all day, and it's just glorious to hear it again after so long. And please let me offer my praise for the magnificent pictures that accompanied it. Just gorgeous and thay added to it. I'd love to know where you got some of the pictures, so I could post a couple on Facebook. Thanks again.
Lani Hall's voice reminds me of Marilyn McCoo of the 5th dimension. It is like a rich, sweet desert that you take the time to savor every delicious bite. Beautiful stuff!
I was 12 when this came out, and my parents were total jazz fans, and I'm so glad for that. There has been a loss of style, writing ability, and the ability to sing a song using just the notes written by the composer. This is a prime example of purity in singing, a beautiful melody, sung as it was written, no need for embellishments, just great vocals, and great music. Rap has done a great disservice to music today in my opinion, but we will return to great music some day.
Sergio Mendes great Brazilian composer and arranger who started his career in the bucolic city of Rio de Janeiro from 50 to 60 years. In a bar called "Beco das Garrafas" (Alley of Bottles). Beautiful voice and song in bossa nova style. From Lorena-SP - Brazil.
Parabéns,e curtamos a música.
IN FUCKING CREDABLE EXCUSE ME BUT MY SOUL WAS JUST MOVED OMG! YOU TALK ABOUT COMPLETE CLASS THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SOUL MOVING POST BLESS YOU SHEAR BEAUTY. WE ARE SOUTHERN CAL.
Sometimes I feel it's so unfair for some of these 60's groups to get lost. I mean many of us are familiar with SM&B66..But they just dont get much play. No one has sexier music and better lyrics than this group, maybe Gordon Lightfoot and some of Jim Croce's stuff..I do love Fool on the Hill..It's the only version to measure up to the Beatle's work.
Smooth, sexy, love song. I have their Greatest Hits CD and it is nice for any evening to sit around with your girl friend and sip a drink and listen. I have been listening to SM and B 66 since I was about 16 in 1965...I love Fool on the Hill and best of all. "Like a Lover" Talk about a great love song.
As I have watched so many clips of Sergio and Brasil 66 performing, I notice that the "other girl singers" in the group (Janis Hansen--brunette performed from 66-68 and Karen Phillip--the tall swivel-hipped blonde with the electric smile--from 68-72) usually out-performed Lani Hall in stage presence, but when it came to pure sweet-voiced beauty, Lani was (and still is) the best as this song so richly demonstrates. Before Gloria Estefan, or Celine Dion, there was and still is Lani .
fd4519 Without doubt my good friends, this music, woundrous musical sound.Pay attention in the female singer,a beautiful Lani Hall, with Sergio Mendes in piano, great orchestra and particular attention, please in one man called Dom Um Romão,who plays drum, consideered one of the greatest drummers of the world. He is borned in Rio de Janeiro,he and two others drummers called Edson Machado and Milton Banana, brought a new style of playing drum and the amazing techniques of playing drums and percussions.
@fd4519 hello my dear fd4519. I strongly agree with your comments, mainly about the great Dom Um Romão drummer. But, don't forget that by the time this song was recorded, the Brasil '66 drummer was another great Brazilian drummer called João Palma. Um abraço.
This is an amazing album on so many levels. Great for sharing, thanks. found the single version of this today, probably in Mono i'll give it a spin later.
What a magnificent vocal. I first heard Brasil 66 while in the Army during the Vietnam War and was so happy to hear such a beautiful song. Superb. As they say, it's from an era long ago and we live with the memories, some good and bad. This is and always will be a classic. 44 years later and I still like to listen to them...It'd be hard for anyone to duplicate that special "aura" that enabled these tunes to become so unforgetable...
This is one of those largely- overlooked masterpieces sung by the singularly talented Lani Hall. Miss Hall's voice is beauty itself and perfectly suited to this song. The memories come flooding back when I listen to this beautiful beautiful rendition of So Many Stars. What a time it was. No one else should even attempt to sing it.
@Shubael1809 Hey, I've just sung it - transposed a 9th down, cos I'm a bass. No-one will ever do it like Lani, whose rendition is supremely beautiful, but the song's for everyone.
This is the most beautiful song ever by Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66. The musical arrangement and Lani Hall's ethereal vocal take me to another world whenever I hear it. The daily grind just seems to fade away. Thank you for posting this, mancmuso1!
@WilliamCarole1977 : The writing credits for this song were listed as Sergio Mendes and Alan & Marilyn Bergman, if memory serves me correctly. I agree, as I've already posted here, that this is a breathtakingly beautiful song and recording, and Lani Hall's performance is the most perfect female vocal I've ever heard on a song.

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever made. I actually heard it in the middle of the night in 1996 for the first time. Sergio and friends do thei Bergman song true justice with Lani Hall's pure tremulous vocals defining the song and making it theirs. It really is beautiful. Thankyou so much for this. xx
I've posted my opinion about this recording before, but your comment has inspired me to repeat myself: I've heard countless female vocals throughout my life which have been outstanding, but I sincerely feel that this is the greatest singing performance I've ever heard on record, period. The song itself is beautiful, and wonderfully performed, but Lani Hall's vocals are beyond perfect--every note, syllable, inflection--and most importantly, with feeling!
@SooperDooperDave Dave, There are many versions of this wonderful song out there. Kathleen Battle does a pretty good version. But NO ONE .... NO ONE touches Lani Hall's unparalleled voice and this instrumentation. Thanks for posting. OH, but this was a magical time.
