But seriously, anyone know what maker's shop those pipes came out of?
Okay, I've got a question for all bagpipers. When you do a birl (on low A) you slide your thumb over the low G hole, then back up again, but is it completely necessary to afterward pull your pinky right off the chanter, or can you just let it sit on the chanter below your ring finger until needed again?
Birls are done with the little finger on the lower hand, not the thumb. There are different ways of doing it, most people slide down over the hole, then quickly pull the little finger back (a '7' style).. Some people just tap twice.. Some people tap then drag.. Some people slide down then up, some people slide up then down.. As long as you hear a leading A and then two clean Gs, it's a birl no matter how you do it..
@carteru93 I actually do what's called a "Tap Drag" style. It's where you just simply tap your finger on the "low G" hole, bring it under the hole, and slide it back up. but to answer your question, I don't see a problem with it, as long as you can make the same low G noise as you would be able to without.
Looks like some quick high-A doublings to me as he plays "Fiddler's Rally".. If you have two or three right after each other, you can flick your thumb up and down to get them all in..
yep its a makeshift High A birl just down strike then come back up with another strike. you can pretty much do a million in a row if you really wanted to
Curious thing about that Union flag is that it's the First Union Flag from 1606.
The Second Union Flag is the more common one with the red X of the Irish St Patricks Cross which dates from 1801.

Thanks for the close-ups on his grip and fingerwork. It helps to see a world class player at work (I'm still on the chanter).

I don't think it's a high A birl there, but he does play one later in the tune.
keydetpiper 3 years ago
@N9686W
It is usually referred to as a birl, but on high a. Its the same as a normal birl, but an octave higher. It has two g's in it separated by high a's
