ive made the pilgrimage to downieville 3 times in 4 years, i've never cleaned this section. the rest of the trail is easy, fast and fun. i hope to make it back again this summer.
If yu dont mind risking a fine, ride the PCT stemming off haypress creek. You can either climb up milton canyon, or head for the yuba. If you go yuba, you can stem off onto the haypress creek trail. In my 17 years living there i never found a better trail. A few miles up the trail (past the PCT) the trail splits. TURN RIGHT AT THE SPLIT. A heavenly trail is to the right, a hellish fire road is to the left.
I know of a lot of trails that I may very well be the only person to know of. The hilda mine trail head stems off the wild plumb grade righ past the first bridge between the hydro plants. It is a very technical trail, very old, all I had t attempt to clear it wth was a fat peice of rebar 10 years ago. The trail is well hidden, use a map to find it.
Wow, I just can`t belive the little town I grew up in is so famouse now. It used to be that just 3 other people and I were the local riders. People still came to ride these trails stemming off gold valley, but not like they do now. When cyote adthe outfitters came to town it all changed. Thank you Greg for putting us on the map.

riding on closed trails gives us a bad name, bad reputation and makes it harder to open new trails
