  • Stamp comes across as sympathetic villain somewhat, but I don't blame Miranda for trying to reason with him or trying to escape. She is being held against her will. Also, Freddie doesn't learn his lesson because at the end of the film he's out stalking another victim. This is a great film! Stamp and Eggar worked great together!

  • @Muirmaiden

yes, this is a great film. thank you for writing and sharing your comment with the viewers.

Freddie is the collector, picking and stalking his victim one at a time, just like collecting a rare butterfly one at a time.

  • i actually found i disliked miranda when i read it, i mean i know she's being held against her will... but she wont shut the fuck up? i thought fredrick was a monster of course, but i still felt bad for him, the ending is extremely disturbing though!

  • @numberxxi

the irony of this story is that some readers might sympathise with the criminal and dislike the victim.

  • @vincentyeo88 thats really true, its what i think of it.

  • @vincentyeo88 It's like in the Hannibal films, you can't help but love Hannibal Lector despite the fact he eats people

  • @numberxxi I feel the same. Im still reading the book atm but Miranda really bothers me. She comes across a spolit little brat. She is far less annoying in the movie.

  • I haven't seen this movie since I was maybe ten yrs. old or so and it still haunts my thoughts from time to time. Very creepy. Stamp is an amazing actor.

  • this fim was filmed in england for the outside shots were filmed in and around hampstead, the interiors were shot in hollywood.

  • Terrence Stamp Is gorgeous . Samantha Eggar is beautiful, and Both are very classy actors.

  • Terence Stanp is so cute! :) My friends think that I've become crazy 'cause I'm in love with a 70 year old guy ;)

He was so handsome in his 20s... and his voice! *sigh*

  • @cluedo1 i agree. i wouldn't mind to kidnapped by a guy like this :) lol

  • is that a white admiral in the jar? That's not a rare butterfly in the United States. But there are some really rare ones elsewhere in the room

  • An Illuminated Film,I Enjoyed Watching This Movie At BigOnlineMovies . c o m

  • I haven't seen this film in over 25 years. I think it was better than Psycho.

  • @UprightBoltUpright i agree , very creepy.

  • LOL IB!! International Baccalaureate:D

And this guy has way too much time on his hands...

  • The song Prostethics by Slipknot is based on this movie

  • and its a great song

  • yeah =)

  • this book was so mind boggling. i would like to watch the movie too if its ever up.

  • Amen to that - I can't get enough of John Fowles. Try reading The Magus - a total mind fuck.

  • how can i get full movie

    i'd like to watch it

  • We had to read this book for my year 12 English class, and I loved it. For the assessment we have to do a persuasive argument to say that he is innocent, a closing statement. The book is amazing, and the plot is amazing as well!

  • i am glad you have a chance to use the book in your English class.

  • Yeah me to actually! Most people in my class seemed to hate the book and would have prefered to go with the other option that we had, which was "Monster Man" by Glynn Perry, but I think this book is great. Unlike most books about this subject or topic, it seems that it gives a more in depth view of the feelings by Clegg, it is great!

  • is there a distinct possibility that you, silentThinker, are also a victim of the IB? haha... if so...where do you go to school?

  • What is the IB???? And by asking that it probably answers your question lol

  • @xXxSilentThinkerxXx What school did you go to? I'm terribly jealous, I wish I had gotten assigned such wonderful novels when I had been in school :P

  • No wonder he has to resort to kidnapping to get a girlfriend! He's the worst kind of nerd, too. He has to kill things in the course of his hobby.

  • you no nothing on biodiversity conservation

  • Amazing book...I think everyone should read "The Magus" by the same author. It's one of the most mind-bending pieces of literature I've ever read.

  • seriously

  • What do you think about uploading the whole movie? I would LOVE to see it :)

You´d be my hero for all times ^^

  • Tonight, while watching the 1965 film "The Collector" with music by Maurice Jarre, I was surprised to suddenly be hearing the opening notes of "The Shining" theme. It happens about 18 minutes into the film as Samantha Eggers' character is waking up for the first time in the locked cellar. It's unmistakable as the same first eight notes of The Shining theme. I wonder if both are based on some earlier piece of music, or was Carlos inspired by Jarre?

  • great observation!

thank you for the information and sharing it with the viewers.

  • The Collector is such a brilliant film, honestly, i would encourage everyone to see it. Terence Stamp is bloody gorgeous!! Watch it, Watch it!!

  • a movie I'm dying to see in its entirity

  • this film was on t.v the other day and i loved it, i am 13 so it came as a suprise that i liked it.

  • It shouldnt have! What does 13 matter? You are a human being - and i love that you reacted to this film. Look for more! Have you seen Hitchcock's 'Rebecca'? Watch it now! xx

  • no i haven't but i'll look it up

  • Look it up right away!! Thanks for replying! xx

  • Whoa, I had to check this film out after reading about it in a Jean Baudrillard book. Its really great, I love the way these british films were shot, great colors, and they are dealing with very pinned down psychological motifs. Reminds me quite a lot of Peeping Tom from 1960. It goes to show how much films like Silence of the Lambs are indepted to these early efforts.

  • yes, those British movies are great.

  • Read the book! Written by John Fowles; its completely incredible. Read it right away, go to your local library!! xx

  • I just got this dvd and I had never seen this film before,it's one of the great psychological thrillers of all time..get the dvd if you can find it.

  • right, i'd ripped this video clip from my DVD bought and shipped from an on-line store in USA.

  • the movie is horrifying, one could not stand 10 minutes of it after reading the book. the actors flatten the complexity of the scenes (not that the director would be too bright), it's just yuck!

  • Obviously, you know little or nothing about Cinema. William Wyler (the director of this film) was one of the great masters! Also, he chose these two actors because in real life Terence Stamp was turned down by Samantha Eggar when both were at college. Of couse, this is intelligent casting and adds another subtle layer to the complexity of their characters. Get it?

  • so subtle one couldn't even detect it

  • I agree that this cinematic recreation is not quite as stark as the original novel, but you have to admit that it is quite wonderful in its way; the world is reduced to such stark claustrophobia; its brilliant, and trapping, disturbingly trapping? Reply reply, i really want you to prove me wrong or right, either way, lets be brilliant !!! xx

  • can someone upload this movie please

  • Maybe you should read the book, vincent88, or whatever your name is, you wouldnt make such obvious statements as comparing the butterfly to the plight of his victim, a tweve year old could make the link

  • this is cool. My cousin Toby in my family I know collects real insects too, no joke. He works for Natural History Museum in New York City ^_^ I visit the museum a few times. My cousin even has a Tarentula, and all other kinds of insects. No joke. 0_0 wow. My cousin Toby beats this collection.

  • I really think Stamp captured Clegg in a remarkable way in this film. I do not like Eggar as Miranda. For one thing, I don't think she is pretty enough. Nor does she fit the description of Miranda from Fowles' book.

Stamp did this film instead of reprising the lead role in Alfie, a role that he originated on both the London and Broadway stages. He had a tough time of it, playing Alfie, and did not want to do it for film. He suggested his best friend, Michael Caine, for the part.

  • thank you for sharing the information with the viewers. i have noted your point of view about Eggar as Miranda, and i think her acting was good.

  • Stamp's acting is phenomenal - especially in this film !!! Amazing Actor.

  • Damn this is a wonderful movie! The book is also one of my all time favourites. Finding this clip online really made my day. I guess it's what they call a culmination of circumstances.

  • right, you think about what you want and it comes to you rightaway.

i haven't read that book yet, and i can't say i'd missed it 'coz watching the movie on DVD is good enough.

  • right, you've made your point and you're entitled to your own opinion.

all viewers are entitled to have their own opinion and write comments here. but i may want to delete any comment that is too negative or offensive.

  • This is why I enjoy old films. It actually let the audience draw their own conclusions. The films we sees today are somewhat plain. It doesn't resonate any thoughts.

It's kind of sad how much Clegg wanted Miranda. He actually made his points but in such tragic ways.

  • dont know if its Terence Stamp's look in this movie but he kinda reminds me of that creepy guy from Ghostship ...you know the guy who wanted everyone dead and get the gold? dont you see the resemblance?

  • he is SUCH A CREEPER!!!!

but I don't think butterfly collecting is creepy in itself. After all, you preserve the butterflies after they die. you don't necessarily have to kill them.

But the thing that creeped me out the most about this movie is that his thoughts on THE CATCHER IN THE RYE are the same as mine.....

  • @bookishmuch LMAO!

  • @bookishmuch u put them in jar , they have so little life,we also collected caterpillars , see them turned to butterflies , but then release them.not see them dying .

  • @bookishmuch hmm really? what did he say about it? I just read the Catcher in the Rye for the second time...great book

  • Clegg is a more careful planner than Wolfgang Prikopil

  • I don't suppose there is any chance you could post the whole video? Like part 1, 2 e.t.c. Ive been trying to find this movie for ages!

  • vincentyeo88, can't you post the whole movie?

  • Rent it from Netflix. I did a few days ago.

  • All the dialogue about the Butterfly collection had a resonance of the Holocaust. She realises how useless are her words to this little Hitler, and what her fate may be.

    A very powerful metaphor!

  • right, you notice the collector refuses to let his victim release that live butterfly from the jar. that situation means that the collector will not release his victim from the locked cellar.

  • He has enormous pride on his collection, and resentment about his child years. She is proud of her life choices, and her capacity to appreciate beauty, she's a well off art-student...(so?) Oh, it's a real lost Chess game!!
