Stamp comes across as sympathetic villain somewhat, but I don't blame Miranda for trying to reason with him or trying to escape. She is being held against her will. Also, Freddie doesn't learn his lesson because at the end of the film he's out stalking another victim. This is a great film! Stamp and Eggar worked great together!
i actually found i disliked miranda when i read it, i mean i know she's being held against her will... but she wont shut the fuck up? i thought fredrick was a monster of course, but i still felt bad for him, the ending is extremely disturbing though!
@numberxxi I feel the same. Im still reading the book atm but Miranda really bothers me. She comes across a spolit little brat. She is far less annoying in the movie.
I haven't seen this movie since I was maybe ten yrs. old or so and it still haunts my thoughts from time to time. Very creepy. Stamp is an amazing actor.
We had to read this book for my year 12 English class, and I loved it. For the assessment we have to do a persuasive argument to say that he is innocent, a closing statement. The book is amazing, and the plot is amazing as well!
Yeah me to actually! Most people in my class seemed to hate the book and would have prefered to go with the other option that we had, which was "Monster Man" by Glynn Perry, but I think this book is great. Unlike most books about this subject or topic, it seems that it gives a more in depth view of the feelings by Clegg, it is great!
Tonight, while watching the 1965 film "The Collector" with music by Maurice Jarre, I was surprised to suddenly be hearing the opening notes of "The Shining" theme. It happens about 18 minutes into the film as Samantha Eggers' character is waking up for the first time in the locked cellar. It's unmistakable as the same first eight notes of The Shining theme. I wonder if both are based on some earlier piece of music, or was Carlos inspired by Jarre?
It shouldnt have! What does 13 matter? You are a human being - and i love that you reacted to this film. Look for more! Have you seen Hitchcock's 'Rebecca'? Watch it now! xx
Whoa, I had to check this film out after reading about it in a Jean Baudrillard book. Its really great, I love the way these british films were shot, great colors, and they are dealing with very pinned down psychological motifs. Reminds me quite a lot of Peeping Tom from 1960. It goes to show how much films like Silence of the Lambs are indepted to these early efforts.
the movie is horrifying, one could not stand 10 minutes of it after reading the book. the actors flatten the complexity of the scenes (not that the director would be too bright), it's just yuck!
Obviously, you know little or nothing about Cinema. William Wyler (the director of this film) was one of the great masters! Also, he chose these two actors because in real life Terence Stamp was turned down by Samantha Eggar when both were at college. Of couse, this is intelligent casting and adds another subtle layer to the complexity of their characters. Get it?
I agree that this cinematic recreation is not quite as stark as the original novel, but you have to admit that it is quite wonderful in its way; the world is reduced to such stark claustrophobia; its brilliant, and trapping, disturbingly trapping? Reply reply, i really want you to prove me wrong or right, either way, lets be brilliant !!! xx
Maybe you should read the book, vincent88, or whatever your name is, you wouldnt make such obvious statements as comparing the butterfly to the plight of his victim, a tweve year old could make the link
this is cool. My cousin Toby in my family I know collects real insects too, no joke. He works for Natural History Museum in New York City ^_^ I visit the museum a few times. My cousin even has a Tarentula, and all other kinds of insects. No joke. 0_0 wow. My cousin Toby beats this collection.
I really think Stamp captured Clegg in a remarkable way in this film. I do not like Eggar as Miranda. For one thing, I don't think she is pretty enough. Nor does she fit the description of Miranda from Fowles' book.
Stamp did this film instead of reprising the lead role in Alfie, a role that he originated on both the London and Broadway stages. He had a tough time of it, playing Alfie, and did not want to do it for film. He suggested his best friend, Michael Caine, for the part.
Damn this is a wonderful movie! The book is also one of my all time favourites. Finding this clip online really made my day. I guess it's what they call a culmination of circumstances.
This is why I enjoy old films. It actually let the audience draw their own conclusions. The films we sees today are somewhat plain. It doesn't resonate any thoughts.
It's kind of sad how much Clegg wanted Miranda. He actually made his points but in such tragic ways.
dont know if its Terence Stamp's look in this movie but he kinda reminds me of that creepy guy from Ghostship ...you know the guy who wanted everyone dead and get the gold? dont you see the resemblance?
but I don't think butterfly collecting is creepy in itself. After all, you preserve the butterflies after they die. you don't necessarily have to kill them.
But the thing that creeped me out the most about this movie is that his thoughts on THE CATCHER IN THE RYE are the same as mine.....
@bookishmuch u put them in jar , they have so little life,we also collected caterpillars , see them turned to butterflies , but then release them.not see them dying .
All the dialogue about the Butterfly collection had a resonance of the Holocaust. She realises how useless are her words to this little Hitler, and what her fate may be.
right, you notice the collector refuses to let his victim release that live butterfly from the jar. that situation means that the collector will not release his victim from the locked cellar.
He has enormous pride on his collection, and resentment about his child years. She is proud of her life choices, and her capacity to appreciate beauty, she's a well off art-student...(so?) Oh, it's a real lost Chess game!!
Stamp comes across as sympathetic villain somewhat, but I don't blame Miranda for trying to reason with him or trying to escape. She is being held against her will. Freddie is the collector, picking and stalking his victim one at a time, just like collecting a rare butterfly one at a time.
