She was Scotland's answer to Brenda Lee and Wanda Jackson and that raspy sound was true of them also! She wasn't trying to imitate the Isley Brothers. If you ever watched the U.K. shows Let's Rock and Oh Boy, she always sang like this on rock 'n' roll songs. I've had a crush on her for a long time. She was married to the late Maurice Gibb, and they remained friends after the divorce. Joe
The first album my Mum ever bought me was Lulu. It seemed kinda old fashioned to me but I did get to like it. Later I realised she was a youngster in 1960s London and she wanted to pass on something that represented a happy time for her. I have since had a big interest in 1960s London and I love the clothes and sounds.
London was certainly swinging in the sixties! I live near Chelsea, and Kings Road was the place to be. Ask your mother if she remembers The Chelsea Drugstore, Kleptomania, Gandolph's Garden, The Magic Mushroom, Hung On You and Granny Takes A Trip!
I agree that there are much better versions of Shout. But back in the 60's girls only sang "Girlie" songs. Then Lulu came out with this belter and took everyone by surprise.
Very Brenda Lee....very good indeed!
