Never knew Greer was an animal rights activist, if she was she'd know Steve did nothing that park rangers and zoological researchers haven't been doing for decades. This type of documentary? What actually interacting with the animal instead just talking about it from a distance? All due respect I'll take Irwin over Attenborough any day. I absolutely agree with Germaine. I think that Steve Irwin, though it is sad that he has died, was an embarrassment, to Australian culture, especially the television show. If there is a need to show Australia's dangerous wildlife, there are better ways to go about educating the world than poking them with a stick. From what I got from the video, she was expressing her happiness that that kind horrible expression of Australian culture, has come to an end, not that she is glad that Irwin is dead.

I have to confess I came to this by accident and didnt even know who Steve Irwin was until I began listening. I'm not saying that Germaine Greer didn't have any tact on the unfortunate incident however the interview brings to light another issue. Australian culture is the coexisting of different cultures therefore the "un-Australian" doesn't exist unless when one culture is seen as more significant than the rest which is what the interviewer was doing. He canonises Steve Irwin and then accuses Greer of being "un-Australian" so that he may present her opinions as invalid, abhorrent.

I think the substance of her argument is respectable, even though I don't agree with it. I can imagine PETA people would probably back her up.

The timing of her message is unfortunate but not entirely unreasonable. If she does aim to affect cultural change, then there is no better time to catch people's attention than the death of the icon of that sub-culture.

I think it ultimately comes down to her tone ("for god's sake!"). She just sound like a very likable person.

Guess what: Steve Irwin was on American TV screens before he became an Australian phenomenon and when asked about him Hugh Jackman described him as 'some idiot that gets himself bitten by poisonous creatures and says "oh crikey"' so obviously he agrees in theory even if he was being respectful to the widow and children by not backing up Germaine Greer. But it was something that could have waited to be said even if it was true... I dont know enough about animal psychology and nature reserves....

I think it's scary how this reporter is making it "un-Australian" to not like the Steve Irwin show. It sounds oddly similar to what US citizens opposed to the US invasion of Iraq were called. How can it be un-Australian, or un-patriotic, to not like a television show? I did some reading at one point, and it turns out that Steve Irwin was sort of in the pocket of some powerful Australian politicians, which may be why his death was so played up in the media there.
