I think australian animals have to have potent venom glands, whether they be aquatic or land-based, because it's the only way of taking down larger prey. I think germaine greer is a stupid feminazi sow, and should attend a zoology class. So she can understand why animals need to evolve certain characteristics for them to feed and survive.
Never knew Greer was an animal rights activist, if she was she'd know Steve did nothing that park rangers and zoological researchers haven't been doing for decades. This type of documentary? What actually interacting with the animal instead just talking about it from a distance? All due respect I'll take Irwin over Attenborough any day. Maybe she didn't like the way Steve never came off as a smug, egotistic wanker who craves the title of intellectual.
She is wrong. 'This type of nature program' still continues. Mainly funded by the discovery channel. I am not against it as long as the animals are not hurt. But i can see why some see it as animal harrasment
Germaine is absolutely correct. Many people agree with her. This reporter is a stupid misogynistic arsehole trying to denigrate one of Australias leading women icons and one that has done more for the "intellectual Appeal" of Australians than he or Steve Irwin ever have. This idiot needs to listen to what people are saying rather than trying to bully them into submission. Germaine is a fantastic role model for men and women all over the world.
Greer has her shit together. This video is an wonderful piece of evidence which portrays the contrast of an Australian who can objectively see elements of "Australian culture" for what they are, and a reporter who embodies everything wrong with it.
I absolutely agree with Germaine. I think that Steve Irwin, though it is sad that he has died, was an embarrassment, to Australian culture, especially the television show. If there is a need to show Australia's dangerous wildlife, there are better ways to go about educating the world than poking them with a stick. From what I got from the video, she was expressing her happiness that that kind horrible expression of Australian culture, has come to an end, not that she is glad that Irwin is dead.
I have to confess I came to this by accident and didnt even know who Steve Irwin was until I began listening. I am sorry the man has died and sorry for his family but why did anyone ask Germaine to comment. anyway..They obviously wanted confrontation and shock horror......Most people who are intelligent keep their counsel to themselves (Not me of course) so although there may be people who agree with Germaine they wont immediately rusth to back her up...there are more important things in life.
of course steve needed to jump on the crocs, how else is he going to subdue them so he can transport them if he needed to.
its got nothing to do with him? I completely agree with the reporter, it has everything to do with him.
shes so concerned about the image that steve was putting out about Australia, what about the image that she is putting out, a bitter whinging old hag that feels the need to advertise her ridiculous opinion when nobody wants it.
Get a life all of you and let the late great Steve Irwin rest in the peace that he so rightfully deserves. RIP Steve. Sorry for his family's grief, greer hang your head in shame, discusting woman.
I don't like the way Steve Irwin treated animals either, running up to them with lawnmowers and stuff! I thought he was a dick - although he did donate lots of money to animal causes which I support.
I'm not saying that Germaine Greer didn't have any tact on the unfortunate incident however the interview brings to light another issue. Australian culture is the coexisting of different cultures therefore the "un-Australian" doesn't exist unless when one culture is seen as more significant than the rest which is what the interviewer was doing. He canonises Steve Irwin and then accuses Greer of being "un-Australian" so that he may present her opinions as invalid, abhorrent.
I think the substance of her argument is respectable, even though I don't agree with it. I can imagine PETA people would probably back her up.
The timing of her message is unfortunate but not entirely unreasonable. If she does aim to affect cultural change, then there is no better time to catch people's attention than the death of the icon of that sub-culture.
I think it ultimately comes down to her tone ("for god's sake!"). She just sound like a very likable person.
Guess what: Steve Irwin was on American TV screens before he became an Australian phenomenon and when asked about him Hugh Jackman described him as 'some idiot that gets himself bitten by poisonous creatures and says "oh crikey"' so obviously he agrees in theory even if he was being respectful to the widow and children by not backing up Germaine Greer. But it was something that could have waited to be said even if it was true... I dont know enough about animal psychology and nature reserves....
I think it's scary how this reporter is making it "un-Australian" to not like the Steve Irwin show. It sounds oddly similar to what US citizens opposed to the US invasion of Iraq were called. How can it be un-Australian, or un-patriotic, to not like a television show? I did some reading at one point, and it turns out that Steve Irwin was sort of in the pocket of some powerful Australian politicians, which may be why his death was so played up in the media there.
such a hateful woman, if there is a hell, i hope there is a VIP section reserved for her...
how could she come out and say those things about such a great man? he was over-the-top yes, but he dedicated his life to the protection and preservation of wildlife.
then she compares jumping on a crocodile to cracking a whip at it? what do you expect to be done when relocating a crocodile? telling it to roll over and go quietly?
shes such a well educated person, and you can so see that she isn't even bothering to argue with a news anchor, especially one from ACA hahahaha, they are only in it for the ratings. I love this woman and her nerve to stand up and express what she believes to be right, whether it's to the disagreeing of half the nation.
That guy was an idiot first class, making money out of all those creatures that just wanted to be left to there own devices. I think that stingray was speaking for all the animal world and a lot of the human world too. Germaine Greer gets my backing and the Dickhead interveiwing her should try swimming with the stingray for a while...pleaseeeeeee
"I hope I'm out of touch with what idiots are thinking." Fucken right Germaine, you're awesome. I hate this PC bullshit that you have to talk up how awesome someone is after they have died, Steve Irwin is massively overrated
She makes good points; He exploited animals, shameful is that not? Australia is not a hell hole, and I should not be made out to be. I was embarrassed, along with many Australia. Erwin was an American phenomena of sensationalism through the exploitation of animals, dressed up as a nature programme.
Germaine Greer is a hateful son of a bitch how dare she wht the fuck has she every done for animals and she starts on people like steve who care and put there life on the line for the animals they love
