I just tried this "hack" and it didn't work. I wanted to upgrade from W7 home premium to W7 ultimate. When I edited cversion.ini and saved it and booted it I got an error that I can't upgrade. It says I have to go use Windows anytime upgrade. Sad..

@tarubinap you wont lose files if you choose Upgrade instead of Custom in the installation. HOWEVER, this is ALWAYS the biggest causes of OS instability, and a lot of times the OS become basically unusable since its so unstable. It's really not worth it, and its better to just wipe out any reinstall. Upgrade installs can take several hours while wiping everything takes 20-30 minutes

@mrawoodcock No, but you can boot to the XP cd and wipe your drive and then install it. Be sure to backup your files first. IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD AT LEAST 3 YEARS OF COMPUTER DO NOT ATTEMPT. Look online for tutorials (hope you have a link scanner) (avg has a free one) also ask on online services on how to do this eg yahoo answers (YouTube does not allow posting of links)

If you have the professional version or better, you can emulate xp mode. Some games aren't compatible with Windows Vista or 7 (they were designed exactly the same), so if you run them in Windows xp mode, they have a much better chance of working.

Changed regedit for currentversion from Business to home and tried from upgrade DVD, still met with "no you cannot". not sure if I am still required to copy the entire image to harddrive and change the cversion aswell. Any help?

To answer my own question,

Changed EditionId to HomePremium

and ProductId to "Windows Vista tm Home Premium" Notice the space between Home and Premium in productId.

This worked! and installation and activation went fine with windows 7.
