The Russian ones are nice too and I own 3 Russian civilian AK variants that came out of izhmash/ legion.

@Bishopx97 just put the charging handle on the bolt on the m-16 and eliminate the current charging handle and foward assist....then use a short stroke piston and get rid of the direct gas system.....problem solved.

If I were to walk into a gun shop and the guy behind the counter said I could get one of the three assault rifle he puts on the counter in front of me for free, and he puts down an M16, a G3 and an AK-47. Something interesting about the AK-47 is that it was only manufactured and used for a few years after 1947. From there the Soviet Union updated the blueprints and created the more reliable and lighter AKMS, which is much much more common than an original AK-47. The 47 term is still used as a blanket term these days for ease of description of all AK versions. For example, the Chinese AK is called the Type-56, and the new AK is the AK-74.

@RatedRsupeRme I own one of those real AK-47's you speak of. The original AK-47 was more expensive to make because of it used a machined receiver opposed to a cheaper stamped one found on the AKM. The AK-47 was not any less accurate or less reliable then the AKM.

@danrtopp If you cant handle 6.89 pounds or hit a target at less then 100 metres with a rifle that a decent shot could score an eight inch grouping at 300 metres, then you probably dont need to be handling a rifle. The AK-47 is far more reliable under combat conditions. Whereas the M16 is complicated and requires a lot of cleaning, the AK requires very little maintance and is easier to train troops to use it.

I saw the Finnish version of the kalashnikov in a firearms book. It's called the Valmet/Sako Rk.60. it looks almost the same but its made from different materials and had different stocks.

The M16 is 1/2 the weight can carry twice the rounds and can still penetrate a helmet at 400 yards..Yes, you cannot run it over with a tank and expect it to fire. Only an idiot would look for anti-tank characteristics favored over light weight and increased capacity. In VIetnam stoned soldiers forgot to clean their weapon and paid the price. In the marines we are taught to clean our weapons before ourselves.

@tjenk712 the original m16 magazines were 20 rounds. the original ak-47 magazines hold 30 rounds. thats closer to half than it is to twice. later magazines were made to carry 30 rounds though
having been a serving solider and used both a M16 and AK47 I would take the AK. it is not as inaccurate as many people say and is a far more robust weapon all round.
@CrazyBirdC No doubt the M16 is more accurate, but the AK-47 is no slouch either. The AK-47 has more recoil, but I don't find it to be unmanagable at all. The bullet weigh more, but you are getting better lethality against enemy personnel and bullets that defeat hard cover better.
The M16, Jungle Warfare, bullcrap! The M16 was the most unreliable weapon used during the Vietnam war, the American troops wrapped thick plastic bags around the guns and had to lubricate them, clean them, dismantle->Fix->then reconstruct them around that clock. And though it was immensely accurate the round it used was so weak many soldiers had shot Vietcong numerous times in the chest and they still had the power to fire back. The newer versions are more reliable but the M16 was crap.
i loved the M-16 to,..... until the top of the fucking receiver blew off on a rainy day on a soldier who was using it leaving him weaponless, or the countless soldiers who have lost theyre life to the faultiness of this weapon,. i hatw how ppl side with a we4apon because its American, and not based on facts. Higher reliability, higher stopping power, and one hell of a reputation to back it up.
u know what i find funny? the gooks all during vietnam used these things like crazy and never once complained about the weight. the americans originaly got the m14 which was perfect for jungle combat but it weighs less then the ak47 and it was almost as reliable. but for some reason we complained about the weight and got that god aulffle mess of a gun called the m16 and seince then have made many modifications to it. imigian if we stuck with the m14 where we would be today

All that weapons got excellent assessments from weapon engineers all over the world: cheap in producing, easy to handle and disassemble, simple to fix, excellent accuracy and the legendary ruggedness and reliability.
I have never been an AR platform follower either. Technically, there are just too many things that can go wrong in its complexity. Its pretty, its accurate but you can keep them!

Anyway, Remington and Garand, Without these two The AK would just be a PPsH in 7.62x39mm. As a matter of fact, Kalashnikov's first build on the AK was a Thompson M1A1 knock-off. And later he admitted to imitating the Gas system from a Garand from lend-lease.
It's spelt Sturmgehwer, no H at the end..

would say to peeps talking about ak accuracy from experience the short sight base dosent help things, also shooting at any distance with any assault rifle in a combat situation makes for some unpredictable accuracy, its much different from a day at the range. ive used a hole host of firearms and due to reliability and easy of use and moderate accuracy in semi auto mode using an ak thats been well cared for i would chose one over anything

This is a very BIAS documentary! WTF is the AK-47 number 6?! It should have been number 1! Seriously there are more than 75 MILLION of it and it had killed untold MILLIONS of people! Plus, its also very reliable and simple to operate, a true weapon of Mass Destruction. Let me explain for example, give enough of these guns to a bunch of guys wanting to overthrow a government of some African country, and in just a short time i guaranteed all HELL Broke Loose!

the only weapon that can truly function better is the israeli galil wich is composed of the ak47 receiver bolt carrier and and trigger assembly with a nato 5.56 or 308 round and slightly advanced sight relocation

The real ak-47s are rare as hell and were replaced with AKM because they were hard to make and werent as reliable & accurate.

@RatedRsupeRme It's kind of debatable the story i heard is that after the Israeli Egytian war the israelis captured Thousands of ak47's and sought to improve them to replace their heavy and not entirely reliable FAL's they changed the caliber and sights and side folding stock and their it was the galil Just to note i have romanian AK47(semi-auto) and i once owned a imi galil chambered in 308(semi auto)

@RatedRsupeRme I own one of those real AK-47's you speak of. The original AK-47 was more expensive to make because of it used a machined receiver opposed to a cheaper stamped one found on the AKM. The AK-47 was not any less accurate or less reliable then the AKM.

AK's rule for a reason and it was explained in this video why it rules...If only our troops had them instead of the pansy .223's shot from the unreliable M16/AR-15/M4,we would be on even ground with the enemy and wars/battles would be over alot sooner.The only reason the enemy dies from a .223 round is cause they dont have the medical attention need to address the wounds like we have

in my opinion the real key to the success of the AKs is not only that its reliable and well enough accurate - its sooo damn easy to manufacture it compared to ARs or even modern weapons with plastic housings etc.
Every nation that doesnt even provide electrical power to most of its citizens can gain the ability to either produce them or at least afford to buy large numbers of them.

@danrtopp I'm with you pal, but the Soviet designers were designing the AK-47 through their experiences in World War 2. Most fighting occurred at less than 200 yards so the AK-47and M16 were made for different purposes.

@danrtopp If you cant handle 6.89 pounds or hit a target at less then 100 metres with a rifle that a decent shot could score an eight inch grouping at 300 metres, then you probably dont need to be handling a rifle. The AK-47 is far more reliable under combat conditions. Whereas the M16 is complicated and requires a lot of cleaning, the AK requires very little maintance and is easier to train troops to use it.

I saw the Finnish version of the kalashnikov in a firearms book. It's called the Valmet/Sako Rk.60. it looks almost the same but its made from different materials and had different stocks.

The M16 is 1/2 the weight can carry twice the rounds and can still penetrate a helmet at 400 yards..Yes, you cannot run it over with a tank and expect it to fire. Only an idiot would look for anti-tank characteristics favored over light weight and increased capacity. In VIetnam stoned soldiers forgot to clean their weapon and paid the price. In the marines we are taught to clean our weapons before ourselves.

@tjenk712 1/2 the weight? Unloaded AKM 6.83 lbs. Unloaded M16A2 7.8 lbs. Twice the rounds? Really? No rifle, not even an AK could stand up to being ran over a tank. In wasn't all the soldier's fault, they were given a rifle that wasn't combat ready that would choke on dirty ammo.

@tjenk712 the original m16 magazines were 20 rounds. the original ak-47 magazines hold 30 rounds. thats closer to half than it is to twice. later magazines were made to carry 30 rounds though

having been a serving solider and used both a M16 and AK47 I would take the AK. it is not as inaccurate as many people say and is a far more robust weapon all round.

@CrazyBirdC No doubt the M16 is more accurate, but the AK-47 is no slouch either. The AK-47 has more recoil, but I don't find it to be unmanagable at all. The bullet weigh more, but you are getting better lethality against enemy personnel and bullets that defeat hard cover better.

The M16, Jungle Warfare, bullcrap! The M16 was the most unreliable weapon used during the Vietnam war, the American troops wrapped thick plastic bags around the guns and had to lubricate them, clean them, dismantle->Fix->then reconstruct them around that clock. And though it was immensely accurate the round it used was so weak many soldiers had shot Vietcong numerous times in the chest and they still had the power to fire back. The newer versions are more reliable but the M16 was crap.

i loved the M-16 to,..... until the top of the fucking receiver blew off on a rainy day on a soldier who was using it leaving him weaponless, or the countless soldiers who have lost theyre life to the faultiness of this weapon,. i hatw how ppl side with a we4apon because its American, and not based on facts. Higher reliability, higher stopping power, and one hell of a reputation to back it up.

u know what i find funny? the gooks all during vietnam used these things like crazy and never once complained about the weight. the americans originaly got the m14 which was perfect for jungle combat but it weighs less then the ak47 and it was almost as reliable. but for some reason we complained about the weight and got that god aulffle mess of a gun called the m16 and seince then have made many modifications to it. imigian if we stuck with the m14 where we would be today

Russian infantery weapons are the best in the world: Makarov, Kalashnikow family (AK47, AK74, PK) with all their countless versions, Dragunow SWD, VSS Vintores , RPG 7........
All that weapons got excellent assessments from weapon engineers all over the world: cheap in producing, easy to handle and disassemble, simple to fix, excellent accuracy and the legendary ruggedness and reliability.

the reason why the AK-47 is not as accurate as most assault rifles is because Kalashnikov knew that most fighting gets done in close quarter battles on the streets back wen the Nazi's invaded his country so he used the 7.62x39mm cartridge he tryed 2 make it as a smg with the same rate of fire BUT packs a bigger punch so for long range shooting ur gonna wanna take a AK-74
