  • I don't think it's a butchered song whatsoever. Great version. 'Subdued' is just fine, considering the song's lyrics.

The AT4050 is very clear and neutral; that being said, I don't think its a colourless mic at all. And, teamed with the right pre-amp, it'll make anything that goes into it sound superb.

You might want to try an AKG C414 B-XLS on guitar (and even vocals) just for comparision.

Also, demo an AT4081 ribbon mic on the guitar; I think you'll like it, as well.

  • Great vocals and awesome test dear friend. Can you tell if your golden age is the tube R1 or not? thanks! cheers

  • @darklabelstudio Hey thanks. It's the Active Ribbon, R1 MkIII (not the tube). Great mic for the price. They make a great pre amp too (The Pre 73).. these to together can create some fantastic sound recordings.

  • This is the BEST version of this song I've ever heard! Perfect blend of an excellent vocal and guitar.....

  • You have such a great voice! And the guitar sounds awesome for the price! Nice job David ;-)

Have you had the chance to compare the active R1 and the passive R1? I'm about to buy this mic, but donno which one to choose...

  • @thewmatthieu Hi, thanks for listening. Haven't tried the passive so can't compare. I'd imagine it would be more of a "classic" ribbon sound, noisier for sure, maybe a little darker? I'm just guessing. You'd need a powerfull pre for it though, like all passive ribbons. Hope that helps.

  • How do you find the DAV? I've seen one and i'm wondering if you had any experience with any other similar preamps, like GA Pre73, ISA One, Daking Mic Pre, P SOLO, etc...

  • @NorthernMonkeyMusic Hi, the DAVs are great. I recorded my whole 1st album with them. very nice clean sound, lots of space.. slightly mid rangey. The Pre 73 is great too, warmer than the DAV, more scope for playing with the sound, driving the pre etc.. I like them both very much and use them both for recording. Hope that helps. Cheers D

  • @davidphilipsmusic Great. The DAV's look nice because they are two channel and relatively inexpensive. However, i've convinced myself i dont need two channels and am looking at the Daking Mic Pre One at a little bit more over budget, but gets amazing reviews. Thanks for your help.

  • what interface did u use?

  • Hi, what audio interface are you using? also, what happens if you connect the R1 mic directly to the interface's mic preamp, no external mic preamp?

  • nice sound, good music

  • Hi. The R1 sounds wonderful. I managed to buy one, but I'm attracted even by the Sontronics Sigma (wich costs twice the R1). DO you think it's worth to spend a lot more to get the Sigma or the difference between these two mics is not that big?

  • @zeppelo hi. I have never heard the sigma so couldnt honestly say whether its worth the extra dough. Maybe a forum search could turn up some answers. The R1 is a great mic for the price for sure.

  • Sounds wonderful. The Golden Age seems to deliver as promised. Did you felt it to be to much of a gain sucker? Thanks for posting.

  • @bobpai2006 hey! Yeh it's a cool mic to have around. I used it as drum overhead for a jazz record the other day and it sounded great. Not sure what you mean by a "gain sucker" though?

  • Hey, I just linked back here. We exchanged some messages on the video of my son and I playing "Harvest Moon" -- I am so glad you bought this and put this video up. And we downloaded your album from iTunes -- its terrific!!!

Geeky question: what kind of strings are you using on yours. You are getting such a great tone!

  • @jh3136 Hey thanks for the message. I am surprised daily by how good this guitar sounds and feels. I just sold my Taylor cus I don't use it anymore! Really glad you like the album, thanks very much for downloading it, I appreciate the support. The strings are the ones that came with the guitar. D'Addario Light EJ16 - Phosphor Bronze .012 - .053 They work perfect with this guitar so no need to change them. Cheers

  • wow, sounds really great!

  • Very nice! Excelent vocals and beautiful Guitar playin!
