Interesting comments. :-) I thought it was nicely done. I've only competed once, (and you won't be seeing it out here) so I know a tiny bit. I liked the routine, which I intend to learn and incorporate into my WCS moves. Thanks for posting.
This is either a Newcomer or Novice division competition for West Coast Swing at a Country Dance event. Hence the Newcomer /Novice dancers and the country apparel. And it was four years ago, I'm sure the dancers in this video are much more experienced now. Lighten up, people.
I'll be competing in a collegiate tournament in a few weeks at the beginner level. Thanks for the video. It gives me an idea of where I should be, and what skill level to expect in that category at the competition.
I would guess some of the commmenters don't realize the 44 means your the amature and that makes her the pro. Its a difficult dance and took me years to get a feel for it. Without a lot of comps behind you the pro will have to do some of the leading as nerves set in and we forget what we thought we knew. Not everyone is meant to be a performer but that might not show till later. My instructor told her students I was the worse she ever had. I went on to perform and win many comps.
With all social dancing, the girl is the follow and she does not improve, unless the lead gives her permission...everything that she does is lead by the man/lead. If he doesn't know many moves, then the follow just moves back and forth in her track, thus appearing dull.
@Hnybnny1P : I just thought I would let you know, I have been dancing for more than 3 years myself, so I am entirely familiar with all the "follow and lead". Her dancing is very poor to be recorded. It is just my opinion.
You just keep dancing! As a beginner, I know how difficult it is to learn posture, poise, position as well as to move with fluid and grace. But, hey that's what practice is for, right?
General comment: I post these videos to embed on my website because my family and friends want to see them, not because I think they're prime examples of dancing skill. My pro is a three-time World Champion, and in fact, judges at Masters competitions, so she knows vastly more about dancing than anybody here. I have a thick skin, so I don't mind if you post criticism, but please be aware that I've already heard those comments (and more) from a pro who is probably far more talented than you are.
What so ever he dances boring, his right hand is always down. I do not wish to be rude, but I do thinck in some cases criticism can be constructive. Good luck
pd you seem to have thrown your rattle out of your pram over a comment that is an opinion, or should we tell everybody they are really amazing and brilliant alllll the time giving them the impression alllll they are doing is correct? :)
Your comment is inappropriate and unsupportive. Jeff has a wonderful pro to help him improve, and, in case you hadn't noticed, this is a NEWCOMER division. I watched your video: you need to learn contra and cuban motion, and your footwork needs a lot of work. Fix that before you start criticizing others' dance skills. We won't even start on your grasp of written English. Jeff is doing beautifully, has the guts to get up in competition and is a fun social dancer. Keep it up, Jeff. Save me a few!
Your arrogance is astounding, pat9188. The truth is that, judging from your video, you have neither the talent nor the credibility to teach this dancer anything. In any case, this isn't an appropriate forum in which to do so, nor did he ask for your unsolicited advice. Work on your own dance skills and grasp of written English before you criticize others. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Jeff is developing very well as a dancer, and is a pleasure to dance with.
I mention the dancer was not long in WCS and this is the truth. Some good advices are good for the dancer. If the dancer isn't angry and why you feel so bad?
I wasn't attacked him and I told the truth. Nobody is perfect in the world. If he does the anchor step better, it will be nice!
Thanks, I really appreciate your comments! We'll be competing again at the Dance Fiesta in Albuquerque at the end of September, and we'll be working on some new stuff for West Coast Swing and Two-Step in the meantime, so hopefully I'll be able to post some videos of that.

Dancing is fine, forget the rude comments. Looks clean. As your instructor may ask, travel more in counts 1 and 4 and it will be much better.

Sorry, I don't know who this artist is, but the song is "I'm On Your Side", originally recorded by Keb' Mo'.

No. 44, I believe you are not long in WCS. It's doing okay but you have to do the anchor step better. You anchor steps are too short and rush.

pdsimons seem like Jeff's dancing partner.
I live in Bay area. A lot of people do wcs in here. I saw Jeff's weak footwork and I agree what Pat said.
Jeff, you are fine but not good.
