Man, thanks to you, not only I was able to play, but have the confidence knowing someone is there giving me advice on how it can be easily done. Thanks man.
wait, (i know, another comment after 4 hours....) i just wanna ask, can i substitute a harmonic minor scale on aeolian, phrygian, and dorian mode????..please answer??????
this is really helpful!..this is the lesson that really teaches...not just giving sample licks or etc. blah blah...but teaching the usage and everything...thanks for giving such a quality lesson, hope one day you'll get big in the music scene!
Ph, I don't really understand the whole mode thing. I actually bought Troy's ultimate scale book, but I have a hard time getting into the topic. It's a bit odd to work with scales for someone who spent almost 4 years on the guitar playing Fear Factory riffs and bass-string shreddings.. but anyways ;-)
Well, you have your seven modes which can be splitted into seven scales which then can be splitted into pattern building up a root note, right? But what's with the Persian and Egyptian scale e.g.?
Hey just one question about your site. If i would write my name and email , is it a site where it cost to be a member etc? Since i study ( wich means i dont have a job and earn money ). So would be good to know since your youtube lessons are fantastic!
Thanks for all your videos! You have helped me become a better guitarist and I can't thank you enough. I like this mode learn a lot. Is there any place to get the tab, mp3 etc while the site is down?
I am a begining and what i dont get is how playing tow difernt notes chages your playing complety they are two notes you may not even play in your solo or whatever
Hey man, Im curious - do your lessons teach patterns to introduce modes? Or do they introduce just the sound and notes in that mode? I have been playing for 15 years and well practicing wrong for oh.. 15 of them soo Im far behind where I had always wanted to be. I practiced with patterns usually start on G ionian then A Dorian and so on.. But If I am playing A Dorian am I not just playing G major anyways in a different position?
@GuitarGnosis So the A Dorian is obviously emphasizing the A. You should do a video on modes: When and Why =) I know the modes, how to form them where they go and where they have been but never know when one is appropriate vs another. Though theory is merely a guideline, Id like to walk theory before I run with scissors! Thanks much for your lessons - the sweeping one is immensely helpful!
@silvanarix You've seen nothing yet =). My site will be relaunching in the future with a lot more 'practical' theory stuff, including extensive rundowns on modes answering what you're asking specifically.
I like locrian, phrygian and aoelian alot but occasionally i will use lydian cuz it sounds.... what's the word I'm looking for um... mysterious i guess

Question: I'm trying to conjure up a song that sounds like when you're in this state of psychotic rage that you can't control. The general stuff I hear in my head sounds really deep, dark, and highly chaotic like you're in a total nightmare, but I can't really hear a particular mode. I'm thinking either Phrygian or Locrian, but I'm not so sure. I was just wondering what your personal opinion would be if you were to write a song like that.
@Caldera The phrygian, locrian, and the diminished scale. Add some chromatic stuff here and there too. If you try out all of those, you're sure to find what you're looking for!
Cool man, thanks! Yeah, I was also thinking of doing a lot of diminished and chromatic stuff to give it a really huge dissonant feel. The thing with me though is I'm never sure when exactly to switch to certain things, like if I'm playing in the original key and I want to bust out in a diminished 7 section, I want to make the transition smooth but don't exactly know how. Same with chromatic runs as well. But I guess it's a matter of experimentation, maybe I'm just over-analyzing things. =/
Have you ever read/studied from "The Guitar Grimoire" scales and modes, Chords and Voicings. if you have, have you ever had trouble reading the scales and such?
I noticed. This was the first vid I watched of yours. I love this vids man, you're great. I've been sick for like 5 days and I'm going to start playing again soon.
yes when i play modes without the root i get lost or ill go to the wrong root. I learned that you can learn modes if you have trouble learning box scales like am a mixolydian and an e dorian, and a dmajor. Ill just connect them. As for the locrian its phrygian and diminished 5th it sounds happy over certain chords.
i know the major minor minor major major minor diminished aspect when starting with the ionian using triads and diatonic progression, but what if i start with say the Phrygian, does that just shift the pattern to minor major major minor diminished major minor?
dude great video

Hello, I have a question.
Is the reason why the Locrian mode sounds bad because the flat 5th degree of the mode clashs with the 5th degree of the background(keyboard)?
I'm trying to learn theory right now...
MrBean69er 1 year ago
why do people dislike Locrian? It sounds great over a diminished chord, being the 7th mode. Mix Locrian with the wholetone scale for a cool sound. :)

@silvanarix Both. And yes, you're correct. What's important is the tonic, the note you're emphasizing, what we call 'home' =)
