Difficult chromatic writing that seems effortless as performed by a singer capable of anything. I think this is her best recording of the aria. The Met should revive it with Voigt.
Wonderful music!--dramatic--expressive--but one thing I would complain of. My friends, never--never--NEVER set Shakespeare's original blank verse to music. Not Samuel Barber--not Bach--not Mozart could add anything to Shakespeare! Oh no! Do what Boito did for Verdi--trim it down and simplify, so we can sing it, not speak it.
A truly magnificent opera. Barber at the height of his creative form. It really ought to be revived this many years later. Carmen was also a flop at the first performance. The love duet tucked away in the heart of the opera is one of the finest melodies Barber ever wrote. He refused all entreaty to lengthen it! There was a disappointing Juilliard revival in the 70's: Ming Cho Lee's set was fire damaged the afternoon of the night I saw it. There'd been no time or money to fix it.
Leotnyne Price's voice in all its glory. The premire of Barber's Antony and Cleopatra was said to be a disaster. Leontyne was trapped in the faux pyramid set and the production was ridiculous. However, Leontyne's gorgeous singing opened the season and the New Met Opera House in the later 1960's. A moment in Met history...
Thanks so much for posting this...but can I ask whatever happened to the video of Leontyne singing this live with the Juilliard orchestra? Please put that back online!!

Great Singing! Lousy opera! Saw the opening in 1966 at the Met. A shame and a waste of talent. Spent megabucks for the Grand Opening of the new Met. Could have done better, which apparently was Rudolph Bing's decision.
The opera is one of the masterpieces of the 20th Century; Bing should have been shot for allowing it to be presented in a shoddy, mistake-filled premiere performance. There is no composer alive writing great, melodious, theatrical music like this! Do you have ice water in your veins? Price was amazing in this role; I love the way her voice arrives "on time!"

A regal, dignified, and defiant performance. Beyond compare. The top notes were effortless, sailing overhead like javelins.

You cannot have the same experience with anyone else singing this piece.
