First of all , that flag was the 2nd confederate flag. There was another before it. Second, most southern states thought the issue of slavery should be a state issue, not federal. When Lincoln amassed the federal army, most soldiers went to defend their home states, regardless of how they felt about slavery. it wasnt just about slavery.
