  • Glory to the Greek people that constituted the army that liberated Greece from the Ottoman Tyranny and brought Liberty, Democracy and the implementation of the ideas of Aristotelian Rationalism and European Enlightening to the Greek people as well as to our brothers all the other Balkan people that were suffering under the Ottoman tyranny and obscurantism.

  • makedonia -500 years under the ottoman empire did miniscule damage to our people compared to the betrayal of albania, greece, bulgaria and serbia at the treaty of bucharest in 1913,and ongoing negation of a people you could only dream to be like.a good macedonian.

  • that is enough 400 years we fuckd all greek we could bored guys think about this maybe your blood is turkish blood who can know my grand fathers know greek girls they talkd me they are so sexy

  • bye bye Ottoman Empire ha? Haaah! we Muslems came to Balcans again with MACEDONIA and ALBANIA and KOSOVO Aaaand BOSNIA HERSEGOVINA... Turkiye still in Balcans :) bye bye greece...

  • greetings to mongolia soon

  • Turkiye everytime bigger than Greece and in Greece 100.000 Turk living still and one day we will came to save our brothers and sisters in Greece. Long live Turkiye and western Thrace!

  • When Turkey enters the EU and the Cyprus issue is worked out to benefit both communities, the "bravado talk" will disappear. We are a hair's breadth away from both events. We trade; we cooperate militarily; we lay emergency disaster plans together; we have 13,000 words in common; we are genetically close; we eat the same; we listen to the same music; I have Turkish blood in me (my grandma came over from Izmir in '22). The 'talk' doesn't really show how we feel, it's insecurity. Peace kardash.

  • Thus, we exist in a state of national schizophrenia: on one hand all seems well, as most people would like to have it, and on the other there is always the potential of WHAT IF

Please understand, we can't negotiate the Aegean; a show of good-will would be the ending of the 'cold' air-war over it.

  • uagsi: Regardless of the bravado talk, however, most of us dread the potential for conflagration in the Aegean. On the other hand, we are not sure about the intentions of the Turkish military leadership (not the people). On one hand we want to believe in amicable coexistence (which is really what's happening), on the other we have the daily violations of the Greek FIR by Turkish F-16's and the deadlock in Cyprus.

  • The Church helped retain the Greek language since that was used in the liturgy. Most of the people were uneducated and, since the liturgy was in Old/Byzantine Greek, no one really understood it. But it remained a connecting link to the past in some ways. Also, even more important in the retainment of whatever linguistic continuity, was THE FOLK TRADITION OF THE PEOPLE THEMSELVES as expressed through story-telling and song-writing in panygiria, weddings, and other social rituals.

  • poleske: it is true that the Church helped retain whatever nascent idea of 'Greeknes' during the Ottoman years, but not through schools. The 'secret school' is a myth. The Church was vehemently opposed to any of the ideas of the Enlightenment that were sweeping through Europe at that time.

  • poleske: the Church, and its HUGE fortune, were completely exempt from taxation. The taxes from Christians were collected by fellow Christians who proceeded to retain a hefty fee for themselves. Christian farmers WERE AS MUCH OPPRESSED BY THEIR FELLOW PROUXONTES AND CLERGY AS THEY WERE BY THE OTTOMANS. Read 'Eleutheria i Thanatos' by Kazantzakis, he weaves these all these complex relationships in a masterful way.

  • Greeks and Turks have never been friends. The Ottoman empire caused the destruction of Hellenic civilization. Greece is still recovering from the Ottoman occupation.

Turks always talk of peace when it is their government which tries to claim lands in the Aegean that international law clearly states are Greek.

  • poleske: you are wrong The Ottomans unified as much as they destroyed. The Greek Patriarchate had more power and influence and territorially expanded more then even the years of the Byzantine Empire. The Phanariots ran the government; the Grand Vizier and the Chief of the Fleet were usually Phanariot Greeks; Greeks ran Moldavia and Wallachia (and they destroyed them in the procees through excess taxation).

  • Greeks had no land during the ottoman occupation. Some people befitted from the occupation but very few. More importantly the Ottomans have not changed at all. The phanariot are examples how only those who worked within the Ottoman system were allowed higher education. Most Greek traditions were passed down through secret schools. When Turks show things that they do similar to Greeks they are almost always very different. Like the difference between baseball and cricket.

  • poleske: you are, again, wrong. Many Greeks became Muslims (especially the land-owning class) to retain their privileges. Ampelakia prospered and even formed their own trading commonwealth; the islanders amassed fortunes and dominated the Aegean trade. Where do you think all the fleet came from during 1821? They didn't built new vessels, they already had them and converted them to fighting ships.

  • cmon my dear greek FRIENDS! cant you still understand? we have lived next to eachother and we have to live that way till the end of our life. it is an undeniable fact. why do you always do things that humiliate Turks and why dont you try to be friends and not to fight? it is really difficult for me not to answer the bad things you said here.. despite all thah things, i dont see you as enemies.. you also shouldnt;)

  • uagsi: I don't see the Turkish people as enemies and I don't think that we will have to fight again. The attitude most Greeks have towards Turkey today is a mix of insecurity and bravery, espoused with a good dose of nationalism, necessary under the circumstances in order to maintain national cohesion. We understand that Turkey is far superior militarily, but we will have to fight if need be because of the primordial association with our ethnic identity.
