Great album! When I first listened to it, I never thought I'd like it so much, but I do now! My favourite songs are West of the Fields and Shaking Through, but I love them all, apart from Moral Kiosk and Catapult (they're a little boring). Laughing is also one of my favourites, and I think Sitting Still deserves more credit.
I like R.E.M. but I can't say they're the most original band i've ever heard, even for that time period. Don't get me wrong though, R.E.M. is amazing. Great review channel :)
Wow, you don't care for sitting still? I love it! 9-9 is probably my favourite though. And REM did an awesome live version of "West of the Fields" in Oslo a few years back :-)
This is a wonderful, wonderful album. Seems to have much more mystery to it than most of their other releases. A surreal album. My standout songs: "Pilgrimage", "Talk About the Passion".
You should review "The Queen is Dead" by The Smiths. I'd be interested to see what you think of it. imo Its the British version of this record in terms of reputation/acclaim/period and popularity.
weird--Laughing and Gardening at Night always feel similar to me--You're right, Laughing is better, though--Vast improvements in songwriting on those early albums.....
sitting still and shaking through are a perfect pair !!!
mike's backing vocals make this album special.

This really is an amazing album! Agree with most of your reviews, disagree with some. We have very similar taste. :)

A Lot of R.E.M. fans are going to kill me for saying this but I think that Chronic Town is the best work that R.E.M. has ever done.

I like every track on this album, without exception. Good review, we'll each have our own opinion on particular songs.

This album and REM at this point were way ahead of their time. You're missing out on "Sitting Still" which is one of the best tunes of all time.

Sitting Still just isn't my thing, though I won't argue that REM were doing things no one had thought of.

@SirAllAboutMusic Yeah this album really told all of the Pop, and Death Metal that we're sick and tired of the "oh baby" garbage.

This album as actually R.E.M.'s best. Moral Kiosk is an amazing song.
I recommend you listen to Live's album Death of a Dictionary ( before they were known as Live, they were know as Public Affection)

This is one of those albums that I pretty much listen to all the way through every time. We Walk is one of my favs

You didn't really give Moral Kiosk and Sitting Still enough credit. I thought they were 2 of the best songs on the album.

Yeah, they're just not my thing. Laughing is still the best song on there in my opinion.

Best R.E.M. album ever. This is truly one of rock's greatest masterpiece albums. Murmer will always be my number 1 favorite.
