No need to put that mag in the dirt after 3 rounds. You may need it and the ammo later. If no mag dump pouch it can go in LH cargo pocket of your BDUs Get a BAD lever or hit the bolt release w/ trigger finger of left hand, so it is off the trigger during RH mag change. Drop to kneeling when when mag change and no cover. Just my 2 c...
I feel his tool movement is right on.. but his body is stiff.. no footwork movement in the drill..but then again that might have been the drill so I feel it was good work over all.
To everyone saying this guy is slow....well slow is smooth...smooth is fast. I'd rather practice slow and build good muscle memory than go fast and build bad habits. I would however retain the magazine...I dont see a GOOD reason not to...
you should be able to reach the bolt catch with your left hand, i can on my ar-15 and i'm 16, 5'10'', just saying so you could be faster on the speed reload, no hating, nice rig setup btw
Y'know it'd be much faster just to press the bolt release with his left index finger instead of awkwardly reaching around the gun like that. I hate when people do that. You could also get an ambidextrous lower with mag release buttons on both sides and they also make a bolt release that extends into the trigger guard to you can close the bolt with out having to "ping pong" I believe is the term.
Nice job. I like the fact you operated the bolt release with the non-dominant hand, very smart. I wish the military would allow for soldiers to upgrade their M-4's. I did what I could when I deployed in '03, but it was like pulling teeth to get it done. We didn't even have quad-rails for our M-4's at the time. Keep up the good work!
Pretty good transition. The only thing i recommend is that when you are scanning. scan with your pistol out and while scanning make sure your pistol goes where your head does. Same with your rifle, it needs to be at the high ready and when scanning your weapon goes where your eyes do.
The scan was weak only for not "checking twice", like crossing the street. But scanning with sights out is too slow. The pull-in serves doubly for weapon retention and quicker turn-around. If your scan reveals the buddy of the guy you just downed you can put up sights more quickly pushing out at the target. Swinging the sidearm around handicaps the scan. Room-clearing is the exception because the first hit wins in most cases - even then, high and tight may serve you well.
I was going to say that you really need to reconsider your reloading sequence...but then I realized you are shooting your rifle off-hand and considering how quickly you did this...pretty damn good. That BAD lever would help out quite a bit too.
Speed up that transition time, don't be afraid to simply draw the pistol and PUNCH out to the target. Take your time breaking the shot, but manipulations need to be as quick as you can make 'em. What holster are you using? It looks like a 6004, and it's pretty easy to get a faster draw on one with a bit of practice breaking the hood forward and drawing in one motion.
I'm fastest with a 6004 holster, but that's just because I've put a LOT of time into that platform. IMHO, you'll be fastest with whatever you practice most with.
Have you thought about using your trigger finger to hit the bolt release? I do this when I reload while firing with my left hand. I find it easier than reaching around with my right.
That's what cargo pockets are for. They are a great quick spot to drop empty mags. Oh, and keep your head down in your combat glide. Standing there only makes you a bigger target...
So, great if you're a swattie with ten guys behind you. Unfortunately, real targets shoot back, and you might want to run flat out, which you cant do with a one point sling. If you are really in a fight and have no team behind you, throw the gun over your head and bug out to cover, firing pistol as you go. Don't believe me?, try running 25 yards and your thigh holster and one point sling will beat the crap out of you. Swatties dont use cover because most of their targets dont shoot back.
Single point is better you can change shoulders when you are in a building with a single point sling and when you run you hold the gun in a semi ready position so if a asshole pops out of nowhere you kill him. and thigh rigs just tighten the slack and it is easy to run with.
Single point is better you can change shoulders when you are in a building with a single point sling and when you run you hold the gun in a semi ready position so if a asshole pops out of nowhere you kill him. and thigh rigs just tighten the slack and it is easy to run with. And sadly I know you shoot with nutnfancy and your a very smart shooter this comment is my opinion.
Throwing magazine on the ground is wrong. What happens when you need to reload? Do you go hunting all over for an empty magazine? Pick it up after the fight is over? Most fights are not stationary. always holster that empty clip.
Do you think your going to think about retaining magazines when your being shot at. Only if your behind cover or the firing has stopped and you put a bullet in every ones head then you pick up your mags
retaining the mag doesn't take any longer than throwing it away if you practice a little. The mag is an integral part of the gun. You run out of mags, your gun doesn't work anymore. It's stupid to throw away gun components during a fight just to keep up an imaginary sustained rate of fire. Always keep your gear with you. Having to go back to get something you threw away means having to give up the ground you just gained. Real combantants move from cover to cover. They don't backtrack.
Are you serious? I mean really, serious? Whats it matter if you drop EMPTY mags? Are you really going to pull out a box of ammo and sit there reloading your multiple empty mags in the middle of a firefight. FUCK NO! End the fight, then worry about picking up mags later who carries boxes of ammunition on themselves anyways? Just carry more mags if your worried about running out.
If you have to reload during an advance, then you're using the wrong weapon. What you need is a sub machine gun with a 30 round clip, not a pistol. In the real world, your dropped magazine is going to get kicked aside, trampled underfoot, filled with sand or mud or just plain lost. You won't have any mags to reload if you throw them away during the fight. Using your logic why don't you just carry two guns and throw one away after you empty it? Don't think like a cop, think like a soldier.
Ok, youve lost me. Were talking about an AR-15 with 30 rnd P-MAGS, not a pistol, not a sub-gun. In a gunfight, an EMPTY mag in a USELESS mag. I understand what youre saying, but reloading mags is something you do after the fight has ended, not during. Youll have plenty of time after to find your dropped mags, buy some new mags, or in some way get more mags, worry about it then.
You don't get to decide when the fight is over. There may be more bad guys out there, and you have no mags. And what if you can't go back to pick them up? A waiting sniper would love for you to break cover and go back and look for that dropped mag. Standing around in the open, looking on the ground for mags instead of scanning the area for more bad guys is a great way to get killed. Don't assume that the enemy is a lone gunman. Don't leave yourself open for instant revenge. Expect the worst.
Whats the difference between having empty mags and no mags at all, if you dont have the ammunition on your person to reload them? If you plan on carrying boxes of ammo to reload empty mags, then why not carry more mags in the first place? Also, obviously your referring to soldiers in war like engagements, in which case soldiers dont travel alone and more often then not carry hundreds upon hundreds of rounds (in loaded mags!) on their person. Continued to next comment...
Continued from last comment... Should they (the soldier) run out of ammo, they dont reload their empty mags, they have someone pass them a loaded one. The ONLY situation in which empty mags should be retained is in a post-apocalyptic event where finding mag may be impossible (in which case good luck finding ammunition.
Combat loads do no include extra mags for you. As a matter of fact, you will get disciplined if you lose your gear. Nobody is going to hand you a pre-loaded magazine if you run out. The minute there is a lull in the action, the first thing you do is reload your mags. You just might need them again right away. Depending on your mission, you carry additional bandoliers of ammo with you and you reload. Every ounce of weight you save is extra ammo or rations you can carry. Each mission is unique.
Final points. 1. No cop or soldier has ever performed a tactical reload in a real world situation because it's a stupid and risky thing to do in the heat of battle. 2. Imagine an entire regiment of infantry dropping mags during battle. Imagine all of them milling about, looking for their mags afterwards. 3. If you are on a two day mission, you take two days worth of ammo. There is no such thing as two days worth of magazines. 4. Mags are issued with the rifle. They are never issued with ammo.
@knifeNguns Unless of course you are in the British Army where you will fail your Annual Personal Weapons Test if you do not retain your magazines. That is however because the BA is financially on it's knees at the moment.
@knifeNguns Unless you run into a "blackhawk down" situation. Those guys didn't keep mags and then later got dropped crates of ammo on stripper clips. Didn't do them any good.

Yea. He should probably just get a magpul-style lower reciever with an ambidexrious bolt release.
