Look up Blancmange "Concentration Baby" it beats this in every way - especially the cover art. All Brits will get it at once - others will be of the WTF? persuasion.
@Pearlwig yes i'd like to see this back up the charts, so many of the 80's song could still cut it with the latest generation in the songs original formats , they were so good you couldn't better them by making god awful re mixes
And I'm so tall, I'm so tall. I'm too fucking tall.
Like a lad whose legs are too long for his bed, like anyone who's not a local in Lillyput.
Welcome to appreciating being too big.
For smaller statured people, everything fits, or is too big. For bigger statured people, everything is too small. Small people, try living your life where everything is too tight and unobtainable.
You have nothing but space to make adjustments upon.
Big people, your yearning, yearn for what you take for granted.
if i were to LISTEN to this song and not watch arabian belly dancers accompanying the music, this song would be bollocks. from 2:34 until around 3:20 nothing happens, its just the same loop over and over. thats almost a minute of filler material. it sounds as if somebody just forgot to add the keyboard solo or whatever it is that electro pop bands had in place of the fret wanking heard in so many sub genres of rock
@sholto7 that's cos this is the 12 inch version of the original track, something you do not often see on music videos, a 12inch version of a video I mean.
@cherylw1958 I have never seen the video before just now and I am surprised as the sound is more Asian than Arabic, yet I know all those places in Cairo it seems!
@mattjreid thank you i do know of of Ofra Haza have loved her since the 80s but i will check out the other song. btw i also love some Moroccan pop music but i will have to get my vinyl out to tell you who, once again thank you
I remember blancmange. I was a kid at the time and remember taking an instant dislike to them and closing my mind to their music. Because my gran used to make a disgusting blancmange with a thick skin on it which she insisted I ate.
some parts of this video makes me think of Visage's "love glove" and "horseman" videos, I assume Egypt was a popular destination/setting for music videos during the early 80's...
I would have totally missed this on musical Jeopardy, if there is such a thing. I would have said Oingo Boingo as the group who sings this. I had to google search the entire lyrics to find an answer, and I couldn't believe it. BLACMANGE!!! But it made sense, I have their Blind Vision on 12" vinyl from back then. I'm cool.
@Speedcuffs100 Hey there. I was so into this band. Neil Arthur sings and Steve Luscombe is the guy on keyboards. Check out Blind Vision and Waves by these...... they also wrote "the day before you came" which was covered by abba.
Saw Blancmange play live at Bestival, they played a bloody good gig actually, LOTC and Blind Vision were especially awesome & great when accompanied by loads of lazers & strobe lights ;)
I remember hearing it for the first time on TOTP, but apart from being old enough to see that, who cares how I found it, great tune and good that the next generation think that too, the lead singer had great stage presence, all good, where are they now??
Ahhhh brilliant stuff this was. recently bought the new album Blanc Burn, and sadly its not a patch on their 80's music.Great to hear this again though!!!!!
@YellowYoshiEgg Everyone discovers music in different ways, but all that matters in how they feel about the music. NOT "I heard them before you did, im better than you blah blah blah" shut the fuck up please...
@GilbyDoo Your right!! But when your older and find music that was soooo not the norm when it came out originally and you were a true fan, then and Only then, will You fully understand.
It transports one soul for a few moments and it's AWESOME.
I also remember this coming out. I loved that heavy sitar riff. I was hoping it would start a trend using sitars in music more often. Sadly it was not to be.
@rob16248 . Hey rob. Someone already tried to start that trend. A guy called Graham or Gerry Harrison or something in the 60s with a band called the Monkees or something like that. Didn't take off, though. Don't know what happened to him and the rest of the band. Presumably they just ended up in obscurity...
@AlastairSnaresbrook Haha! A smartass better-than-thou reference to real music. Love it. But I think it was the Rutles, not the Monkees. The Monkees had that Davey Bowie guy that later became Nine Inch Nails or some such obscure pop/metal band in the 90's.
I'm going to run through the street if Cairo in a zoot suit, holding a briefcase in one hand, I phone in the other hand blasting this. How cool is that!?
Then I'll be captured by the Muslim Brotherhood, tortured (not so cool) then released into the waiting arms of Bill Clinton.
Namaste! I love that Song and i still have the 12inch and also MIXING on a Ceiling (a B side)
My message to this Track:
CHILD to Parents: "You RAISE me and then You let me FALL!
That is what we will still hear, if WE/Parents are under pressured by Politic and Lobbyist! If just a few are BRAVE enough to SEE and TELL what is going wrong, WE ARE LOST IN SPACE, and some will "Living on the Ceiling", may some "very sad" FIXED on a LINE :o(
This is the epitome of 80's music! Any fan of 80's or New Wave MUST check out electro kill machine. They are a new band also from Basildon (same town as Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure) and I saw them in London last month. They are awesome...like being taken back to the best decade ever!
GENIUS track from a critically underrated synthpop outfit [in America, anyway]! Though they enjoyed an enthusiastic following on the other side of the pond, I love
this track best with the Indian tablas and sitars set against an insistent electro beat.
Add the visuals from the Subcontinent and you have a syncopated GEM!
@SpiritOf1989 I agree - completely cool. Just to be picky: it's Egypt, not India (or Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc) The Pyramids at the end of the video are in Egypt and most of the street scenes are in the old market district in Cairo. I do wonder why they didn't film in India, given the sitar and tablas. Doesn't detract from the amazing music and great video, though!
Back only 2 years ago,I was watching an eighties era movie I haven't seen in along time since maybe the begining of the '90s on cable. It was call,"No Man's Land"(1987,starring Charlie Sheen). There's a nightclub scene in this movie where this same song was being played and I was thinkling it sounds alot like the band who does,"Blind Vision".

Great Music and Great video..they r the best and soooo Cute!!! I love the 80's wish all the music now was as good. Looking forward to their new album. Hope they come to California!!!
The new BLANCMANGE album 'Blanc Burn' is due out on the 7th March 2011 and will be supported by a UK tour. Check out blancmange.co.uk for more details and to download a FREE MP3.
First time I've seen this video - thanks. Brings an air of Indian and African mystery to the song. The TOTP version is more exciting and foot tapping though.
