Wow Jessi, you are a great teacher that shares. love all the videos you've done. hope you do more. you saved me years on struggling with your valuable insight. thankyou
It's funny - the black belt I'm training under now - Alex Crispim - always tells me that I'm far too nice and that I need to be more of a hard ass. I think that perhaps that it's just hard for a lot of guys to accept BJJ instruction from a female teacher. No matter what I say or how I say it, if someone feels threatened by me - they're going to get the idea that I'M being threatening (arrogant, aggressive, mean, impolite, condescending, whatever...).
Please post more of your ideas, so unusual to find people that present the information with such deep understanding and conceptualizing. make more pls.
U seem to be very smart and u are soft spoken but Id NEVER train with u simply bc the way you speak to people (go to the 4:58 mark) "take ur elbow out, take it out, right here, get on your side" then "Get up Jack" - Ive training with people a lot better than u and they all managed to be humble and polite. You couldve simply said "Ok you can sit"
If a guy said to you "Get up Jessi" he would sound like a dick. As good of a teacher as u may be u sound bossy and condesending.
I just got back from class. It went pretty well. I tried to keep in mind the things you said here. It helped. I'm a blue belt. Some days are better than others. Some days I think my mind is a bit clouded. I like your puzzle analogy. I think the jiu jitsu world would benifit greatly if more instructors gave lectures like this one. I just bought a DVD on the science of jiu jitsu and I think it will help me a lot. Do you have any DVDs on jiu jitsu?
I'm glad you found this useful. I earned my degree in philosophy long before I ever started taking BJJ, which is undoubtedly why I have kind of a unique way of understanding the art as a whole. Most instructors are also 'natural athletes', which I never was. Moves never came naturally to me at all. In order to do them, I had to really understand how all the details fit together. As a result, it sometimes took me a bit longer to learn moves, but I think it really helped me as a teacher.
Chris Ranck-Buhr, one of the Target Focus Training instructors, said that he spent about a year trying to learn hip throws before he found out all the "secrets". Which means he is not going to teach throwing the way he was taught; he is going to teach it the way he knows it now.
People tend to think that change happens slowly, over a long period of time. However, history shows that evolution - ALL evolution, be it geologic or personal - happens suddenly, and generally occurs after long periods of stasis. Your game will most likely plateau for a long time before all of a sudden - something shifts in your understanding, and BOOM! You're at the next level. Just be consistent and keep going to class- even when you don't feel like it - and you WILL improve. Really. ;-)
I did a search on jiu jitsu theory and your video came up! Im going to attempt to keep this in mind when rolling today, Thanks for the upload! Ill let you know how it went!
Thanks Mantra. I agree with you (of course) but I worry that some of my explanations are a bit too...verbose. I kind of 'geek-out' sometimes I'm afraid. Glad to hear I didn't bore you! ;-)
Principles, principles, principles! Not enough grapplers are studing the principles and theory behind the techniques! It's like they have to open the mental book of moves to know what to do, rather than understanding what is required in each situation for what reason.
Techniques without theory and principle have no REASON.
Thank you for posting these video and enlightening us.

I started training BJJ when I was 28. It took me about nine years- training 4 to 6 times a week - to get my black belt.
