  • Great composition! I like it so much :)

  • I love minimalism I love yann tiersen a brilliant minimalist ...

  • take a look at my composition and leave a comment....be sure i take critique pretty well..hope you do also.

    M.J lapierre

  • isnt really bad..it just dont have any emotion..you should take a look at rimsky-korsakov orchestration manual...if youplan to writte for real instrument that wont do...it would be appropriate for electronic music dought....but for real instrumentist it just lack devloppement expression and it dont follow the natural registry of the intruments..my opinion.

  • written with a mouse directly in a computer i guess...sound a bit like it...i doubt it would sound very nice on real instrument....because obviouly you dont have knowledge of orchestration...

  • the clarinet really adds that weird video game sound

  • check out Ricardo Acosta's sonata for piano and violin :D:D you won't believe it

  • Wow this is amazing. You're very talented. :D

  • fantastic! it sounds great and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. don't worry about minimalistic, blah blah. it's not always a bad thing.

my advice is to go on with it and elaborate more. play with silence. if you're basing on the notes on your wind chimes then you've given yourself a pretty tonally strict mold. do what you can with it. you may take all of the intervals in the scale and raise or lower them to get an "outside" sound. play with it and be creative. great stuff!

  • I actually finished. It's 7 minutes long, and the beginning is COMPLETELY diferent.. I have the strings harmonizing with pizz... it's dope! My teacher's idea actually.

  • woah!!!!

    that is so beautiful!!!

i tried to play it on my clarinet...

    didn't work out!!

    LMAO!!!

  • So beatiful it was amazing !!!

  • there are a couple of good ideas within this piece. once the texture thickens out it has some really rather redeeming features. I felt the opening 30 seconds with the violin on its own was unsatisfying. There was no real 'point' to it, which does not make it minimalist. maybe you have done something with that since? the last 45 seconds are ok though, i see the correlation with the gaming sounds (which make good money!) keep it up

  • Very nice. It looks like classic game soundtracks. Something like those old plane shooters. ;)

    Good luck!

Btw I have an encoder so if you have it on Midi, you can send it to me and I'll record it for you with realistic instrument sounds. :)

  • I think it's pretty unique and awesome. If people feel like they don't like it. well duh, it's not a pop song being covered or anything like that. If anyone loved the music from the old final fantasies or even kingdom hearts I think they would enjoy this. Bravo kyle.

  • to tell u the truth i did not like this i personaly thought it was too short and i dident like the sound which shocked me cause 95% of the time i love your stuff but i dont know why but i just dident like the music

  • Fabulous!

  • you OCMPOSED this???? AWESOME!!!!

  • Sounds like either a pause screen music or sort of like a "you're on hold, but we'll get back to you in a few hours... Have fun listening to this while you wait" kind of music to me.

  • I think its good for a sidescrolling platform game

  • I loved this composition when the other instruments joined the melody! :) Very nice made indeed!

May i ask, what program do you use here Mr. Kyle? :)

  • I kind of pity your performers... All those staccato 16th notes... Definitely sounds like an 8-bit menu screen song.

  • LMAO!!!!!!!! Your too funny =)

  • You know your right.

reminds me of some nerdy online midevil game.

  • Next thing we know, Kyle Landry is commissioned for the next installment of Evony Online...

  • This is a really cool composition! I love it! Also, as a cellist, I'd love to hear it performed by the proper instruments- the fact that it's MIDI does kind of make it sound like a video game soundtrack, at least at the beginning. Anyway, great job, it's great.

  • This is really awesome! I enjoyed it! :)

  • Nice composition.

    I know you study piano.

    But do you study composing?

Sometimes I hear a great song, and its in my head all the day, and a few days later you uploaded the song. It's like you can see whats inside my head:P Just like the Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire ending theme, those who fight,Zelda overworld and more.

Now I have the "Animal Crossing Wild World theme, piano arrangement" all day in my head. I was wondering when your going to play that:P

  • After this is finished, may I have the sheet music? I play the clarinet and it sounds fun to play.

  • Sounds like something from a Zelda game.

  • i really enjoyed this one for its simplicity, each note can be separately heard and easily focused on and it has a smooth steady relaxing pace to it, could definitely hear it in a video game!!

  • this is kinda minimalist...not reallllllyy but has some of the same elements...i personally hate minimalist but that's just me. really cool piece tho! the next section should be slow and should have a big clarinet solo ^_^ because like the clarinet doesn't even come in for a while...

  • OH OH OH don't get me wrong, I hate minimalism just as much as you haha.

  • I wish you'd play Moonlight Sonata 1st Movement. :o

  • keep writing it. Me and my friends will play it when you're finished, if you'll let us.

    Awesome piece.

  • Unbelievable!

Kyle, you WILL become a world famous composer. Your level of talent is simply staggering. It's unbelievable that you're only 19. There's people on youtube who've been playing piano for twenty years yet aren't nearly as talented as you.

  • wow...for some reason brings back memories of runescape O_o

  • that would be probably becouse it's MIDI :D and the instruments sound really similarly (especially the flute) ... but the music itself didn't really remind me of RS :)

  • yh lmao!

  • Worst part about the song is that it's not completed. It's so very good...it reminds me of video games and it causes me to want to write. I can't wait to hear the final product. I've listened to this over and over...can't imagine what I'll do when the full thing is done. Hehe.

  • dude you should just start posting more original midi comp.s that turned out to be amazing after all the instraments came in

  • Damn that's a nice piece for a video game opening.

It sounds weird, but very ingenious as well.

  • Very, VERY nice! Writing music is fun and enjoyable (and sometimes frustrating) :P I'm more of a lyric writer though (as enjoyable as playing the piano is)

  • sounds kinda like an old Square RPG from the SNES era.

  • Your sound card could use some upgrading, try using some sampled instruments, they are relatively inexpensive and can create quite dynamic sounds. Go listen to EastWest/Quantum Leap brand of instruments. They are also pretty reasonable for what you get. Just because you are using a MIDI setup, doesn't mean your track has to sound computerized (which it does unfortunately).

  • It's like it's taken straightly out of RuneScape LOL!

  • hell yeah that really sounds like a runescape song or final fantasy :P

  • I love the Clarinet entrance :D

    You should finish it!

  • Aha, this has definitely got a Legend of Zelda feel to it. At first I was thinking it was too boring and all over the place, but when the other instruments kicked in, it was awesome.

  • Same feeling here Dinosaur. The Drug called Music, greetings.

  • Wonderful piece Kyle! For your effort, the Drug called Music, thank you.

  • Great development of the song, Kyle. I like to compose my own music when I can, unfortunately not as talented as you are :P. I personally would also do what your roommate says, and add your other compositions to it.

Also, I'd like to know what program that is. I'm using Sibelius 4, it's a bit clunky, what are you using?

  • What program do you use? Because it looks like the same one my Junior High band director used to make ensemble pieces.

  • this sounds like some runescape song lmao.. sounds great..

  • This is great! I, like others, don't have a lot of experience in writing music, but I think the way the music builds up is great. I'm a little afraid of giving my opinion on how you should continue, but maybe there's someone else in your comments who has a more coherent view of your music, lol

Personally, I think it's wonderful what you're doing with this. :D

  • yea im getting a video game vibe :D

  • Oh I also had a question...what software did you use in order to upload this? I'm thinking about uploading some of my pieces in hopes of getting some input.

  • Like your notation said, I think you should add on little bits here and there, and also continue on from where you left off. I was expecting (from the last note) for it to go down another note like it was written at 1:40 and then go into a kind of legato section from there. But since that's what I expected, maybe you could go in a different direction from there so it's not predictable. I really like it so far, would love to hear more!

  • Yeah, I could definately hear it in a video game!

  • As a gamer, I thought the intro as a bit too long. I liked how the instruments were brought in. The last part was definately the best. It was getting better and better along the way. Good job, though you might consider building the song up faster. But then again I have minimal knowledge of writing music. I was never able to compose something anyway =/

  • very nice :)

  • i really love the last bit at the Bb chord. maybe repeat that bit some more and add another section in the style of that

  • lol, it sounds a little like what would play while you're traveling on the map of an old rpg. But that's a compliment. It stands up there with Uematsu. It's very relaxing.

  • at the beginning it didn't really have the game type sound, but when all the instruments were in it definitely was game-like. What music program do you use? I would suggest using one that used recorded samples for the audio instead of midi sounds, unless that's the effect you were going for. From personal experience Finale 2009 or 2010 is the best that I've found and it has options to use midi or sample sounds. Only thing about the piece is that it could use a stronger cadence at the end.

  • The piece has just begun. It's not cadencing lol. And I'm not using sibelius in search of good sounds.. it's just so easy to use and creates beautiful sheets.

  • lol I guess that's a good reason for no cadence. If it were me writing the piece I would continue to a sense of cadence, without losing the motion of the piece, and then go through some chormatic passages much like you'd see in the development section of a sonata allegro form. It would give some fresh tonalities to explore.

  • sounds like this could be in an adventure game haha..

  • where to go from here?

Well, at m42, the clarinet plays what you could easily turn into a theme. Also, 45- end in the flute and clarient, could be a wonderful theme also. Use both! You have the material, just play with it. Switch up the orchestration, take to new keys.

    Great start regardless.

  • I didn't know how long this video was, so I was bopping my head along and when the music stopped I was very upset. But yeah, certainly Final Fantasy worthy. Maybe some type of plain or grasslands. Somewhere maybe near the beginning of your adventure. But I loved it, it was really neat!

  • I think this is such a game style, maybe if you add piano notes you'll notice it

  • intro was a little to long but when the other instruments set in it was ok.

  • Wow! The beginning was boring, but the ending was very good! :)

  • "Does anyone feel like this is like a minimalist/video game style? "

    Yes, I do.

  • I would so like to hear the real thing perform this, especially when you finish it.

maybe you can put a key transposition after this to make it more dynamic. Don't you think? well, it's just a suggestion though. :D

  • that so reminds me of FF9 :s

and yes, the MIDI sounds horrible on sibelius T_T you should try and get cubase or somethin :D

  • Dude you need to invest in the East West Composer's bundle. Totally serious about that. It's on sale right now and completely worth it.

  • I just got to the end, usually, it sounds pretty good, I was a little shocked because I wasn't expecting all these instruments to come in at once, but it sounds very "traveling the world" type music. I can still see this working for game music, you seem to have found a basis of melody, and if it's game music I think simplicity is the best thing to go after.

  • Comment removed

  • It sounds nice Kyle. Very minimalistic, but seems like it will work properly on a GameBoy MIDI style. It just gave me feelings of TOZ: Link's Awakening, when your in that dream house. Yeah my bro's been composing his own music as well. What program do you use for creating your compositions? My brother loves Finale Print Music 2009, and I have gotten use to I still haven't yet finished my composition. Anyway, keep up the good work dude!

  • Yo man, I use sibelius 5. I may get 6!

The midi sounds are horrible right? I can't wait to get it performed!

  • Wow Sibelius 5, haha never heard of that one either, GermanSea bass doesn't seem to like finale that much.

Yes MIDI is terrrrrrrible, did you convert this into mp3? Or is it still midi format? With finale you can convert it to mp3 and the quality, increased quite a bit, by the sounds of it maybe you did convert the sound into mp3.

  • MIDI and MP3 are two toally different things. MP3 is an audio format taht contains audio data. MIDI files, on the other hand, do not contain actual audio. Instead, the music sequence is recorded as a series of numbers which explain how the music is to be played back. The advantage is that MIDI files are very small, but the sound is totally dependent on the output device (usually the sound card in the computer). If you have an awesome sound canvas, MIDI files CAN sound quite good.

  • Yes that is correct, however with Final Print Music 2009 you can convert the written MIDI sheet music into MP3, which converts the sound into a fuller and realistic sounding quality, then if saving it as a midi file.

  • Where to go from here? Well that depends entirely on what it is for. If it is for a video game (does sound like one) or picture then we'd need to see the picture that goes with it. If for you than I would suggest that it continue to build up a bit longer leading into a new key where it will repeat some of the earlier material and then build into a climax in the original key. Just my opinion. By the way love that B flat chord.

  • Almost like Sonata form haha.

  • this is pretty awesome. i though of video game music right when it started.

  • Reminds me of Nobou Uematsu for sure. :P

  • It sounds like videogame music definitely. I like what you've done. Modulate to another mode similar to the mode you are in. It seems like you are in F Dorian. You are using wonderful colors to compose. After the Bb chord you changed colors in a suitable way (quite similarly to your etude for piano and flute). If you don't mind my suggestion, I believe you could turn the piece into a fugal like piece (not a FULL fugue) without changing the color. I hope your final product comes out well!

  • when that Bb chord comes in it doesnt sound like its the tonic. your song definatly isnt in Bb, it sounds like some mode of F.

  • Yeah you are right lol.

  • Mmmmm, I want to hear more. Reminded me of video game music...particularly from the final fantasy games. That's a pretty nice compliment considering how I view the composer for the FF series, :P

  • O_O LUV IT!! ^_^

  • I really enjoy it, it does sound like a midi from a early 90s video game but it is totally unique and awesome. I dont know the type of sound you were going for for the overall piece and maybe that would help with the critique. But I can say this, you are getting better and better at composing, keep up the work.

  • Speechless... ^_^

  • That brought a smile to my face....

Anyway, it sounded like it was starting to build, so maybe add a climax and repeat the theme in another form.

I've only played piano for three years, so I don't exactly know what I'm talking about.

  • Would be totally awesome for video game music!!!! x-D

  • love it! i can try to get it down on clarinet and post it. haha people can post with the flutes and the clarinets and then we can have a song going all together :-] XD

  • i agree with some of the other comments, it does sound like video game music. =) lolz

  • amazingg. really. <3

  • canu actually play this on d piano???

  • Can we put this song in the next Zelda? :)

Awesome work Kyle! I don't know how you do it!

    5/5

  • Hey Kyle, I was wondering are you majoring in composition because I heard that majoring in music can be a big mistake but I would want to major in music (just my luck haha). So any advice on whether to do it or not?

  • not kyle but, "you can never practice to much" xD!!!!

  • Really cool sounding

    sounds like video game music

  • Its kinda of a minmalistic game thing like in pokemon for gameboy

  • awsome!!

  • awesome! I love the flute part. (because i play it) what program is this?

  • Thats so cool

    ^_^

  • The intro reminds me of some random forest you would find in a Zelda game...lol. But it's cool you were inspired by your chimes!

I really liked it when all the instruments came together...was really cool.

  • dude, if they made a pokemon game just for God, this would definitely be on the soundtrack lol.

and the section right after the transition at 1:36 reminds me of part of your semester project (1st movement) you composed last year.

great job though. keep up the good work man.

  • 0:30 "copyright © Kyle Landry" xD

    thats ofc important.

    first step u made :D?

  • question:Does anyone feel like this is like a minimalist/video game style?

answer: yes. but the flute doesnt suit to the video game style. :S

  • ha yeah sounds videogamey like watch?v=_46dI02enAM&feature=channel_page

  • *goes to learn clarinet part*

^.^ If you finish this, this would be really cool to hear live.

  • i really like how you started out really simple and gradually got more and more complex, great piece!

  • Exactly. That's what I was going for!

  • What program is this? Awesome comp btw.

  • awesome job<3

    :D

  • heheh great job ;) nice tune ;p

  • At first I wasn't feeling it, but then about halfway until the end it got super epic. Nice job :D

  • thats amazing. i would love to see this turn into a full composition

  • you are amazing (:

  • I bet you'll end up with a job making compositions for games. That would be so cool.

  • i would totally play all the games that kyle made the music for. hypothetically speaking(for now haha)

  • It sounds like something from Final Fantasy.

    Great work, Kyle.

  • nice it sound like the lost forest in zelda ocarina of time

  • I REALLY LOOOOVE the piece since 0.52... the final is AMAZING!

  • I think the only reason it sounds like videogame music is cos it's made on a transcription program with basic MIDI style sounds. If you got orchestral musicians to play it, you could have an amazing masterpiece!

  • Exactly!! Thank you so much.

  • It does sound quite a bit like music, and I think its because of the fast tempo along with the violin's runs. It's a very nice tune and would love to hear more of it!

  • Reminds me of adventure music for when you're in an open field XD

When all the instruments came in I was thinking, "Wow...that's complicated..."

Now all you need is a group of musicians playing it, and you're set :D

  • sounds like gamboymusic ^^

    5/5*

  • I love it... Dude, you´re a great musician, you really should do this for living :)

  • sounds like town music

  • good stuff

  • Wonderful!!! This is very good. It could be in a video game or something. But you are very good:)

  • runescape music!

  • Do not shame Kyle's musical genius by comparing it to any part of that horrible game.

  • lol i get where you comin' from.

seems like a vintage rpg/action game.

  • The end is weird.

    It's just all of a sudden....OFF!

    Really video game-ish.

  • It's not over yet.

  • where is the rest??

  • Definitely has a video game overworld sort of feel. That's a compliment from me cause I always find those themes refreshing.

Other than throwing it into a pro orchestra synth, you might want change the mood abruptly at the end of the climax to something a little lighter. Something upbeat or maybe something soft. Then, afterwards, you could bring us back to the main melody.

  • This could've definitely been spyro the dragon music.

  • Waauw, this is really beautiful!

It sounds like it could be in a video game because the computer made the music, I think if you would play it on the instruments it wouldn't sound like music for a video game.

  • Good.

I agree with others, it does sound like it could be in a video game.

  • ;D

    Nice!

  • Reminds me of an early RPG. With some improvement it could be fantastic. Still sounds like some of the generic music you'd get with RPG Maker, but I think that's cause of the synth instruments, not the music itself. You should grab a copy of something like FL Studio and get the Orchestral plugin. I'm no composer but I've made some good sounding stuff on that by fluke. You can get some real great orchestra sounds. Good luck :D

  • WHY IS NOBODY RATING THIS ??? - please do it above !

  • Since the clarinet's in Bb, it's key should be C.

  • I like it. It's very old school video game style. I can see it fitting to a good old 2D side-scroller like Rayman or a platformer like Zelda. But you know what would probably be cool? Trying to put such old school music like this in a modern game. It would create a unique atmosphere. It's cool to see you using something else than the piano, but personally I think your piano arrangements like Dearly Beloved have much richer tunes. Nothing you can't fix by adding more instruments though ;)

  • And one tiny thing. The transitions between the melodies at 0:15 to 0:17 sounds a tad too little similar so it feels a little like it's changing songs instead of altering the melody. If you could make the first melody be a tad more similar to the second melody (since the second melody is the longest and kinda the "main" melody) it would sound better I think.

  • I love it,

and yes, it sounds like a song from zelda, or pokemon xD

  • Comment removed

  • I agree with others before me: sounds like it came right out of a Zelda game (which is a VERY good thing! xD).

  • Everything is enjoyable, but from 1:38 it really is magical.

  • I'd say the same thing ^^ A Zelda's song ^^

  • sounds like something you would hear on a nes/snes rpg

    i like it

  • can't help it but it sounds pretty much like a melody from a zelda game. please upload a longer version soon ;)

  • Don't like the beginning, but the middle and the ending are awesome

  • same here.

  • yo that was SO good. it is 5 am and someone in my apartment pulled the fire alarm. so i was pissed but now i am happy because this song is legit.

    weeeooooeeeeoooooooo! more plx!

  • make it into a piano concerto lol :D

  • This is something I'd expect out of a video game, haha. :P

Which isn't to say that it's not good.

    But lol, the ending..

  • How do you feel about the ending?

  • Well, not so much the ending notes. But HOW it ended.

I just wasn't expecting it to end so abruptly.

From my amateur pov, however, I liked just about everything else.

Just thought it could use some closure, you know? But, reading the description, I guess you ran out material or something?

  • Kyle you encouraged some critique etc in the comment box so here are my few cents.

I wasn't sure what was really happening in the beginning as whenever an idea formed the style changed. However from about 0:40 onwards the piece started to become more organized and became much clearer. Then at about 1:00 it finally became a piece as the flute bought out the melody.

You should carry on with this piece. Once it gets started it is very 'videogame-esque'. I can see it on a ff start menu (like ff7s)

  • Style changing? The whole piece is based off of the same motifs and notes even.

  • I know that it is based off the same notes the whole way through. I just felt that the piece was much better from 0:40 onwards. Style changing was the wrong thing to say lol. Sorry.

  • yeah it feels a lot like something you would hear from a rpg (final fantasy)

sounds awesome though. a bit electronic.

  • Thanks. But you can't judge a piece by the midi sounds. That means absolutely nothing haha.

  • i was a little surprised about the ending, it could have gone on for a few minutes i think =)

i hope you'll find some people who are actually able to play this with real instruments!

  • I already have them =)

  • Ending? It's not even close to being done yet.

  • dude u should sell this piece to Square Enix

  • Not a big fan of the opening, but once it really got started it was pretty impressive. 1:35 onwards was just beautiful.

  • Stick with the melody there was just some off parts in the beginning that hindered the flow. Other than that, great concept. I like it ... this would work well in a Zelda game :)

  • I don't know why, but I think the Viola melody from 24-26 would be better in the Cello, then give it to the Viola on the pickup to 27. Also I think you should drop the first three clarinet notes, and let it start on beat 3 of measure 41, because you have a brief motif going with the jump of a third and the interjecting melody conflicts with that idea, so I think it'd feel awkward as the clarinetist.
