So what do you think to OnLive now? Its recently been launched in the UK and I noticed you have an account. I recently picked up a few games and the console and I have to say its pretty awesome for how much it costs.
I have a really poor net connection at times... so it can be a problem... but I also have 2 kids... so gaming always has to be fit into a misc gap.
One thing they should do is open their system up to indie developers as a app market type of platform and charge them to distribute through them. This would generate them another stream of income, and could possibly lead to them getting some exclusive titles in their lineup.
I am also kinda iffy about this technology as well. although do thinks it could work if implement certain thinks. For example if the implement some sort of p2p protocol that will use a small percentage of a user's bandwidth to stream the core parts of the game your playing with other users playing the same game. This way they could reduce there server load. They should also advertise this as a platform for independent game developers(ie. appstore) and charge them to use this.
I think that OnLive will be better on potable consoles (Nintendo 3DS & PSP2 (whenever it comes out) or maybe like the iPhone, and other iOS Devices) because everyone knows trying to play Crysis or Left 4 Dead on a mobile device is less likely to happen
@zivsahar maybe your retarded. look shit up before you post a dumb ass response because you only need a 1.5MB conection to run standard and 5MB/s for 720p HD video and you don't need a core 2 duo because its all rendered before it is shown as a video to your screen! you can have windows 95 and play crysis!
Good points onlive is the is taking over no company can not used their tech only after. 2012 contract so all gaming companies are doom ps no more red lights so people will buy onlive ture. It will be a cult system like neo geo u will need money to play. Gaming companies can send games quicky cheaper no sellouts everyone wins
Je, je, someone just told me: you could even run Onlive on your Xbox360/PS3/Wii/Iphone/PC/MAC/ name it... if it has Wi-Fi, 1G and OS, Onlive can run. Anywhere! anytime!
God.....What if there servers crash.. Its not like steam where you download the games to your harddrive... You have to wait to play O_O well untill they fix the servers.. Meh even xbox servers crash for one day but GOD Onlive seems AMAZINGGGGG
I honestly don't know how they are doing it, its patented technology, they wont say, but they are extensively testing their codec and the endusers network configurations to make sure it works. I think it will work, and I definitely hope it does! I have faith lol.
the big thing is that no first party games will appear on onlive, meaning it won't have halo, mario, killzone, gears of war, god of war, gran turismo etc etc. And those are the main games that make or break the console, so of course consoles are gonna stay in market.
@Hotrod768 you have a point, but as you can see sony has a thing for robing people of there ideas and so dose MS and Nintendo and somthing tells me they might just fallow even if its not with the next gen. Evrything is gonna be download based at least by the next consoles ans Onlive not only improves that but it helps the game devs and gamers a whole lot more plus fights off thieves like gamestop wich kills game companys and makes them broke. Besides imagine how good games can look.
I'm not denying that, you can already see the digitization of gaming through games you can buy on market places and if your a PC gamer there's steam. But the thing that onlive is boasting is different then downloading games, it is claiming that you are playing a streamed game meaning that while you play it is sending relays to the head server and then they are sending the outcome back to you in under several ms which has never been done before. Also think of your bandwith :3 and its 720p only.
I see your point and respect it aldo i have to say most people that i know are ither still playin on normal Tvs or just up graded to a some what small or normal size 720p tv so that wouldnt effect a big portion of gamers just yet. 1080p is stil a lil much nowadays.
that is true most CONSOLE games run at 2op and upscale, but pc gamers generally play at much higher resolutions, so their normal games will look dumbed down on onlive.
The Phantom was a VERY VERY SICK CONSOLE, and the design was simply BEAUTIFUL, to bad it didn't make it because the videos of it was SWEET, and don't forget about the DisCover Console
It sounds like it was just the PSP Go, or the PSN, or Xbox Games on Demand and Xbox Live Arcade, or those 2 pc video game download services that escape my mind right now as far as their name is concerned. What was different? looks like their idea has been implemented.
ONLIVE is for casuel PC gamers who cant afford the latest $3000 intel i7 with two 295 nvidia graphic cards, 12 gigs of ddr5 ram ...ect. just to run crysis at very high. onlive doesnt have full 1080p res but casuel gamers dont count. just look at the wii.
thats not true... where the fuck did you get that? what, you are a hardcore gamer because you mindlessly spend thousands of dollars on virtually already outdated stuff? this is great for hardcore gamers, just dont have to update every week
i do not own a gaming pc. my pc cant even run pacman ok. so this onlive is interesting for me. what i meant is onlive only puts out 720p witch is fine for me and you but what about the harcore gamer who own a 2560 x 1600 screen
i THINK THIS ISN'T FOR HARD HARDCORE GAMERS WHOSE ARE TOO SPOILED WITH 1600 X1200 RESOLUSTION OR HIGHER. THIS JUST BRINGS PEOPLE WHO DON'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR A $2000-3000 COMPUTER TO PLAY AT 100FPS. PLUS WITH THE NUMBER OF PWOPLE WITH NETBOOKS NOW THIS IS MORE SOMETHING FOR THESE LOW PERFORANCE MACHINES TO DO AS THEY HAS BECOME VERY POPULAR AND ARE CHEEP. AS FOR THE TV CONNECT CONSOLE I DON'T THINK IT WILL BE AS OF CHOICE . AT LEAST TO ME THIS SEEMS LIKE MORE OF A LOW END PC THING. since tv PS3
I say No. The phantom had a better chance than this does because you had the chance to do physical media or digital media, with a hard drive. This is risky even with the micro console version because if something happens to the network or servers your games are gone. Your gaming online can only be within your region. If They're going to try something this they should hook up wit sega because they were the ones who pioneered it with the Sega Channel which was a success.
That doesn't automatically make it more expensive- The monthly fee is $5 (I think), and the bandwidth cap varies depending on your ISP, so this wouldn't necessarily cost more. As for the lack of back up, you do bring up a valid point. You wouldn't be able to control their reliability, which would be a problem. However, OnLive does provide a universal gaming experience, which would be very interesting if they can pull it off.
If on live were to go under...does that mean that all the games and media you purchase for it goes bye bye as well? When a console goes under we still have the hardware and the games to play. I wonder what steps if any the developers behind the games are taking to make sure we get to keep our copy of "Tomb Raider Underworld"? Seems safer to have physical media.
my opinion about OnLive is that is too radical, and i love my gaming culture, i think it hurts the traditional pc gamers, ill stick with traditional pc gaming
Onlive sounds like a revolutionary system. The concept is out there, like google streaming your computer to any device. Nows it about other variable and factor's being able to capacitate onlive. As we all know with technology, advancement will happen, and at one point onlive will become active.
Onlive is not going to be successful, I can't see them able to make money from this, for example lets say that there were like 10,000 people playing Crysis at the same time, they would require 10,000 mid or high range pc that maybe cost $1000> each, thats like $100 million for equipment already, they would also need to buy equipment that encode video in real-time, and pay for the streaming video bandwidth.
If everyone had FIOS Type connections like 5mbps or higher, this might work but many people don't . most have 3 mbps on DSL . cable speed will depend on how many people are in your area sharing that bandwidth. I am skeptical too.
They claim that they have an advanced video compression algorithm which will reduce network usage as compared to if they were using a different algorithm. One problem I forsee is, they also claim that people on crappy computers can play games at max settings, but how will the end user render these images in that high quality that they promise? i will have 1 1st day release...people cry about no disk.but when is the last time i used the graphics card i payed 600 for in 2003? same ish to me..i hate waiting for ebay to ship the game i bought..
I think in X years or so when hopefully everyone has a truly stable and high speed connection then onLive would see some real marketability. However I suppose the people right now who are more likely to use onLive would be people who already have a relatively stable and moderately high speed connection. Maybe. It's still a big maybe.
But this would be great for hotels, dorms, grandma's house... as a side note. I just don't see it being the main way to game, IMO.
I think .. wait i actually read in game informer... some gaming companies are presenting platforms to launch games, so other gaming companies [i'm assuming] can come to them and launch through them.

i agree with bwana, also how can you stream the gaphical power of a console to a 2 + year PC with a 2 meg broadband speed? if this is possible we may never have to buy any new hardware lol. I think this a wishful cocept and so you could say we should be able to play any game on the iphone over wifi or 3G using this OnLive service app.
