i'm from philly and can tell you that there's still an almost surreal kind of insanity there...violence,reality,and goodness too...iv'e seen where bukowski used to live,north philly,cuz i worked in that neighborhood,and is still one crazy area...philly,love it or hate it,it's definitely unique

He was following the lines said by the alcoholic writer in the 1945 film, "Lost Weekend." This movie was one of Buk's favorites. Buk always liked to say how he would hawk his typewriter to buy a bottle of booze. This is exactly what the alcoholic writer did in "The Lost Weekend." The drunk in the movie even went into Thoreau's "...lives of quiet desperation." Buk was big on this idea; it was a theme he used alot: "I needed to scream!" which was how he described his reason for writing poetry.
